The patient was a 13-year-old boy who was a member of the judo club at his junior high school. Approximately 1 week prior to his presentation, he developed multiple erythematous pilaris papules on his occipital area and was treated by a local doctor. The erythematous lesions expanded to 10 × 10 cm, showing granulation with drainage and strong spontaneous pain. At this point, he visited our hospital. He was diagnosed with kerion celsi due to Trichophyton tonsurans by fungal examination. The patient was treated with terbinafine (125 mg/day) for 6 weeks, and a brush test at 6 weeks was negative.

Tinea capitis (TC) is a superficial mycosis of the scalp, considered one of the most common dermatophyte infections in children. Until now, the species mainly described in our environment are Microsporum and secondly Trichophyton, which are contracted mainly by direct contact with infected animals or humans, respectively. We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with alopecia and inflammatory lesions of 2 years of evolution, finally reaching the diagnosis of inflammatory tinea capitis caused by T. tonsurans, an anthropophilic fungus considered rare in Argentina and emerging in the province

Emergence and increase of terbinafine-resistant dermatophytosis led to the identification of Trichophyton mentagrophytes internal transcriber space (ITS) genotype VIII in 2017, later renamed as Trichophyton indotineae and classified as a separate species in 2020. With its suspected origin in South Asia, this novel strain has emerged in Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Russia, and Switzerland, with its spread attributed primarily to travel and migration. Diagnosis using routine mycology laboratory techniques is unable to distinguish T. indotineae from T. m

Trichophyton (T.) tonsurans is considered as the main causative agent of tinea gladiatorum (ringworm) in contact and martial arts worldwide and regularly leads to outbreaks. In the national wrestling squad in Leipzig, dermatophytoses occurred frequently and recurrently in children and adolescents for over a 2-year period. The wrestlers came to the dermatologist's office for clinical examination and sampling. Dermal scales and hair roots as well as smears were examined mycologically with fluorescence optical preparation, fungal culture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for dermatophyte DNA.

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton violaceumis an anthropophilic dermatophyte, endemic in Africa and recently an emerging pathogen in Europe.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a retrospective analysis of dermatophytoses due to T. violaceum between 2007 and 2018, in order to evaluate epidemiological trends in Southern Switzerland (Ticino).
METHODS: We reviewed all medical records of patients affected by dermatophytosis due to T. violaceum between January 2007 and December 2018 in Bellinzona (Ticino, Switzerland).
RESULTS: Dermatophytoses due to T. violaceumwas diagnosed in 44 patients, 33 of which were in the las

UNLABELLED: Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic dermatophyte. It can be responsible of various clinical aspects especially inflammatory lesions of skin and scalp. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of dermatophytosis due to T. verrucosum.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: It is a retrospective study realized on 35,918 patients suspected to have superficial mycoses in a 13-year-period (from 1998 to 2010).
RESULTS: T. verrucosum was isolated in 178 patients corresponding to 1.2% of all dermatophytosis. Ochraceum variety was the most frequent (60%), f

Thiosemicarbazides are compounds known for their biological activity, particularly their antimicrobial properties, which include activity against fungi. The difficulty of treating fungal diseases induced us to assess the antifungal properties of some novel thiosemicarbazide compounds. We selected the natural products limonene and camphene as sources for the preparation of these new thiosemicarbazide derivatives. The compound N(4)-[2,2-dimethyl-3-methylnorbornane]-thiosemicarbazide (TIO C) showed an antifungal effect on Trichophyton mentagrophytes, with values of MIC = 55 mmol L(-1) and MFC = 1

A 67-year-old female suffering from diabetes mellitus type I revealed brownish-yellow discolouration, subungual hyperkeratosis, and onychodystrophy of several finger nails. Upon culturing of nail specimens, Trichophyton gallinae could be repeatedly identified on Sabouraud glucose agar. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a human infection caused by this species in Germany. T. gallinae is a zoophilic dermatophyte that primarily infects higher animals, but can also be transmitted to humans sporadically. Herein, clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiological aspects of this zoophilic dermato

Six cases of Trichophyton (T.) violaceum infection seen in a nursing home are reported. A 66-year-old female (case 1) was found with tinea corporis on her face, chest and shoulder, associated with black dot ringworm. A KOH examination of hair showed endothrix parasitism. Reddish purple colonies were isolated from the patient on Sabouraud's dextrose agar, and intercalary and terminal chlamydospores were observed on slide culture. PCR-RFLP analysis of the microorganism showed a pattern of T. violaceum type. Therefore, the isolated fungus was identified as T. violaceum, a typical anthropophilic d

A 25-year-old female patient from Kosovo presented with a slowly progressive cicatricial alopecia which had started when she was 6 years old. Her brother in Kosovo had similar lesions. At the erythematous border of the hairless area, crusts, erosions and pustules were apparent. Mycological examination identified Trichophyton schönleinii, the causative pathogen of favus. Histological examination revealed hyphae and showed no features suggestive of other causes of cicatricial alopecia. Systemic terbinafine combined with topical ciclopiroxolamine resulted in rapid improvement of this disease whic

A 49-year-old male with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia was seen at Bellevue Hospital in New York, N.Y. Sputum samples yielded cultures of Candida lusitaniae, Mycobacterium avium, and a filamentous fungus, Trichophyton fischeri. T. fischeri is a nonpathogenic fungus which resembles the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum. This is the first record of the species from U.S. sources. This case exemplifies the ecological differences between T. fischeri and T. rubrum and illustrates how correct identification of the former species can minimize diagnostic confusion. The two species are distinguished from

In recent years, there has been an epidemiological renaissance of zoophilic dermatophytoses caused by a variety of factors. At present, the most important causative organisms are Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. granulosum and, as in the present case, Trichophyton verrucosum. These are formerly notifiable pathogens which are highly virulent and contagious. The example of an extensive, originally unrecognized tinea corporis et faciei in mother and child presented here shows the current importance of Trichophyton verrucosum, but also the diagnostic difficulties in dealing with

Presented herein are two cases of dermatomycosis that occurred in Indiana. The causative agent in each case was Trichophyton verrucosum. The first patient had onychomycosis, tinea pedis, and tinea cruris. Although of long duration, his condition cleared readily after the administration of griseofulvin. The second patient, a recent immigrant from Yugoslavia, had erythematous, minimally scaling lesions was more typical, since T. verrucosum is commonly found on exposed parts of the skin. In this patient, also, lesions cleared after the administration of griseofulvin therapy.

Dermatophytoses (synonymous with tinea) are superficial fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, typically caused by dermatophytes in the genera of Trichophyton and Microsporum. Dermatophyte infections are common and are estimated to affect roughly 20-25% of the global population. Historically, tinea infections have been treated with short courses of topical and/or oral antifungal therapies, however, the last decade has seen increasing antifungal treatment failure. Trichophyton (T.) indotineae (previously termed Trichophyton mentagrophytes-genotype VIII) has emerged as the primary speci

In the course of globalization, migration and global warming, we are increasingly confronted with pathogens that do not occur naturally in our latitudes or appear in a different form. We know keratinophilic dermatophytes as the cause of tinea pedis, onychomycosis and also tinea corporis and capitis. Transmission usually occurs via domestic or farm animals and via autoinoculation. In recent years dermatophytes have gained additional importance as a possible sexually transmitted disease between immunocompetent persons. For the first time, dermatophytosis was described as a sexually transmitted i

Tinea corporis is a common superficial dermatophytosis mostly located at the trunk and extremities. In contrast, tinea of the anogenital region is rare and predominantly occurs in tropical countries. In recent years, a distinctive variant of pubogenital tinea (PT) characterized by deep tissue infiltration and systemic symptoms has been reported, and transmission via sexual contacts has been hypothezised. In the majority of cases, a new genotype of Trichophyton mentagrophytes classified as T. mentagrophytes VII was detected as the causative pathogen. We report a case of PT caused by T. quinckea
