INTRODUCTION: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is one of the main features of myxomatous mitral valve disease which affects Dachshunds. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of MR and tricuspid regurgitation, valvular thickening, and prolapse based on echocardiography in apparently healthy Dachshunds.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred two privately owned, apparently healthy Dachshunds, recruited via the Swedish Dachshund Club,a were included in the study. It is a prospective observational study, where the presence of a cardiac murmur, echocardiographic evidence of MR and tricuspid

OBJECTIVE: Aortic valve repair is a more recent approach for the treatment of aortic regurgitation. Limited data exist for reconstruction in specific pathologies with isolated cusp pathology. We analyzed the results of aortic valve repair in patients with aortic regurgitation caused by myxomatous cusp prolapse in the presence of tricuspid valve anatomy and normal root size.
METHODS: Over a 12-year period, 111 patients underwent aortic valve reconstruction for regurgitant tricuspid aortic valves without concomitant root dilatation. Cusp prolapse was caused by myxomatous degeneration in 72 subj

Although mucolipidosis, a fatal metabolic storage disorder, is associated with cardiovascular abnormalities, detailed, non-invasive cardiac examinations have not been well documented. We studied 4 children with type II and type III mucolipidosis, 3 of whom had unequivocal evidence of aortic regurgitation characterized by phonocardiography and M-mode echocardiography. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed an aortic valve prolapse in 3, a mitral valve prolapse in 2 and a tricuspid valve prolapse in 1. The QT interval was prolonged in 2 cases. In 1 autopsy case, we found considerably thickened

Chiari network is an infrequently visualized web-like structure in the right atrium that is usually thin and small. Rarely, it can be prominent and elongated with protrusion into the right ventricle during diastole and complications have been reported. Thirty-eight patients (median age 2.5 years) with prolapsing Chiari network were identified and associated cardiac abnormalities documented. Echocardiographic right and left heart parameters were measured and compared to normative data. At presentation, the extent of Chiari network prolapse below the tricuspid annulus was 9.1 ± 3.5 mm (mean ± st

During the period February to December 1990, 52 adult patients were referred to our clinic for evaluation of the presence of the Marfan syndrome. In 24 out of 52 patients the Marfan syndrome was diagnosed. Cardiac abnormalities were found in all patients: mitral insufficiency because of mitral valve prolapse (83%), aortic dilatation (67%), aortic insufficiency (38%), tricuspid valve insufficiency with or without tricuspid valve prolapse (17%) and atrial septal defect (4%). In 3 patients an aneurysm of the ascending aorta was found. Early recognition of the Marfan syndrome is relevant for preve

Colour flow Doppler echocardiographic examinations were performed on 15 horses; 10 Thoroughbreds and 5 Standardbreds; 9 mares, 5 geldings and 1 stallion; mean +/- s.d. 3.4 +/- 1.1 years. Cardiac murmurs were audible in 12 horses (80%), but these had characteristics consistent with functional murmurs in all horses. A standardised two-dimensional (2-D) and M-mode echocardiographic examination was unremarkable in all horses except that aortic valve prolapse was identified in 3 horses, tricuspid valve prolapse in 2 horses and mitral valve prolapse was present in one horse. Colour flow Doppler echo

Prolapse of the valve leaflets is reported in 2 cases in the setting of double orifice atrioventricular valve. Diagnosis in the first case, an asymptomatic 8-year-old female, was achieved by echocardiography and consisted in prolapsing leaflets of a double orifice ("bridge type") mitral valve. The second patient, a 24-year-old male, died suddenly. Postmortem examination revealed prolapsing atrioventricular valves, with double orifice ("holy type") of the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve. There was disruption of the penetrating atrioventricular bundle into multiple fragments with fasciculo

In two patients who had been heroin users, loud midsystolic clicks developed during infective endocarditis involving the tricuspid valve. The sounds were loudest along the left sternal border, exhibited an increase in intensity during inspiration and were associated with right atrial gallop sounds and with murmurs of tricuspid regurgitation. This constellation of clinical events suggests that the midstystolic clicks emanated from tricuspid valve structures as a result of disordered function of the chordae tendineae. Prolapse of the tricuspid valve has recently been demonstrated angiographicall

Echocardiography has been widely used for a detection of mitral and tricuspid valve prolapse. However, no extensive study has been made for a recognition of aortic valve prolapse. In this study, an echocardiographic search for aortic valve prolapse was attempted on 1700 consecutive cases at our laboratory including 70 cases with aortic regurgitation and 30 with mitral valve prolapse. Criteria of aortic valve prolapse by cross-sectional echocardiography were as follows: (1) eccentric coaptation point of aortic valve cusps, (2) asymmetric enlargement of the aortic valve cusp, and (3) downward di

Severe (110/50 mmHg) pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to mitral valve prolapse is rare. We reported herein severe PH secondary to mitral valve prolapse in a 65-year-old female. The patient underwent mitral valve replacement and tricuspid annuloplasty. The pulmonary artery pressure after the operation decreased to 69/20 mmHg. Prostagrandin E1 was effective for residual PH compared with nicardipine hydrochloride.

Transposition of great arteries (TGA) can be associated with left ventricle outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. In the presence of ventricular septal defect (VSD), septal leaflet of tricuspid valve may prolapse through perimembranous VSD or rarely tricuspid valve tissue may override to produce LVOT obstruction. Occasionally, this may be mistaken for vegetation due to associated pulmonary valve endocarditis. We report a case of d-TGA with presumptive pulmonary valve endocarditis and LVOT obstruction that was found to be due to tricuspid valve straddling on transesophageal echocardiography, result

We report the case of an 8-year-old patient with severe acute mitral regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation after a motor vehicle collision caused by traumatic injuries of the supporting structures of both valves. An echocardiogram showed avulsion of the posteromedial papillary muscle of the mitral valve and a severely prolapsed anterior tricuspid valve leaflet. In addition, there was a near-complete defect in the left ventricular side of the interventricular septum, with diffuse hematoma of the akinetic septal muscle. After emergency mitral and tricuspid valve repairs, consisting of re-imp

A patient with typical Marfan's syndrome was monitored by echocardiography, which detected (in 1978) a prolapse of the mitral valve complicated by severe cardiac insufficiency, necessitating valve replacement. Seven years later an aneurysm of the ascending aorta (60 mm) was detected which caused prolapse of the aortic valve with valvular insufficiency, combined with prolapse of the tricuspid valve and a calcified foramen ovale the permeability of which was verified by peripheral injection of contrast medium. Echocardiography, notably two-dimensional, is an excellent examination for regular and

Nineteen patients with types I and III Ehlers-Danlos syndrome were hospitalized at our institution between 1973 and 1978. Chest roentgenogram, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram were done; 11 patients underwent cardiac catheterization. Thirty-five cardiac or great vessel abnormalities were detected. Fifteen patients had nitral valve prolapse; six also had tricuspid valve prolapse. Dilatation of the aortic root or extasia of the sinuses of Valsalva, or both, occurred in six patients. Dilatation of the pulmonary artery and annulus caused pulmonary regurgitation in one patient. Congenital hear

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the special features of cardiovascular effects in connective tissue disorders through a group of fifteen cases observed over a period of ten years. The group consisted of eleven cases of Marfan syndrome (or Marfan-like syndrome), two cases of pseudoxanthoma elasticum and two cases of Ehlers-Danlos disease. The cardiovascular lesions were as follows: 1) dissection of the ascending aorta which was confirmed and had been treated surgically in 2 cases; 2) aneurysmal dilatation of the ascending aorta in 5 cases; 3) moderate mitral valve prolapse, which w

Echocardiograms of 400 patients with mitral valve prolapse examined at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital between 1974 and 1977 were reviewed. Eleven patients (3 per cent) were found to have prolapse (10 patients) or large excursion of the tricuspid valve (one patient) and large excursion of the aotric valve (four patients) or dilatation of the aotric root (seven patients) in addition to mitral valve prolapse. Two of these 11 patients underwent mitral valve replacement, and myxomatous degeneration of the valves was noted on pathologic examination. Almost half of the patients with multiple floppy

The incidence of and the Doppler color-flow echocardiographic characteristics of aortic valve prolapse with nonrheumatic aortic regurgitation were examined. Aortic valve prolapse was observed in 21 of 243 patients (15 men and 6 women) with aortic regurgitation as detected by Doppler color-flow echocardiography (rheumatic, 112; nonrheumatic, 131) in 1247 consecutive patients. Patients with aortic valve prolapse included three patients with essential hypertension and one with annuloaortic ectasia. The remaining 17 patients (7% of those with aortic regurgitation) had no other associated cardiovas

Traumatic tricuspid regurgitation is a rare and progressive disease. Early diagnosis and surgical valve repair are very important. A 57-year-old male was referred to our hospital with a history of blunt chest trauma. Three-dimensional echocardiography showed severe tricuspid regurgitation and demonstrated two main anterior leaflet chordaes of the tricuspid valve rupture and the whole anterior leaflet prolapsed. The diagnosis was severe tricuspid regurgitation due to leaflet chordae rupture secondary to blunt chest trauma. Surgical repair of the tricuspid valve was performed in this patient. At

OBJECTIVES: Correction of tricuspid regurgitation due to complex lesions (not treatable with annuloplasty only) is associated with suboptimal results. To improve the efficacy of valve repair in this context, we developed a new surgical approach, which consists of stitching together the central part of the free edges of the leaflets producing a 'clover' shaped valve. Our preliminary experience with this novel technique is reported.
METHODS: Between 2001 and 2003, 14 patients (mean age 57+/-17 years), with severe tricuspid regurgitation due to complex lesions, underwent valve repair with this n

Mitral valve prolapse has been associated with several connective tissue and developmental disorders, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan's disease; pseudo-xanthoma elasticum, myotonic dystrophy, cardiomyopathy, Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve and atrial septal defect of the ostium secundum variety. Presented here is a case of mitral valve prolapse in a patient with epidermolysis bullosa. The author is unaware of any previously reported cases of this association.
