Effects of metals on seed germination, root elongation, and coleoptile and hypocotyl growth in Triticum aestivum and Cucumis sativus.

A simple, fast, and easy-to-perform method was carried out for the quantification of the inhibitory effects of metals on wheat and cucumber. The method uses seed germination, root elongation, and hypocotyl and coleoptile growth in these plants as parameters in the presence of varying concentrations of metals. Metals selected for this study were Hg, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Although effective concentrations of these metals for a certain degree of inhibition were different, both plants had a reduced seed germination rate, root, and hypocotyl or coleoptile length with increasing concentrations. Dissecting genotype-by-environment interactions and genetic diversity in gamma irradiation-derived bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) mutants.

Climate change and escalating biotic pressures, particularly stripe (yellow) rust, present major challenges to sustainable wheat production in India and globally. To enhance genetic diversity and introduce novel variations, this study utilized mutation breeding by subjecting seeds of the popular wheat variety DBW88 to gamma irradiation. Following rigorous selection through successive generations, twenty promising mutant lines alongside their parent and commercial checks (HD2967, HD3086, WH1105) were evaluated over three consecutive crop seasons under multi-environment trials. The genotypes wer

Humic substances might mitigate negative effects of pyroxsulam and 2,4-D herbicides on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) productivity.

Ensuring food security requires enhancing agricultural productivity while implementing sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact and conserve resources. Biostimulants have emerged as an effective means to promote plant growth and improve resilience to stress. This study aimed to evaluate whether combining two herbicides with a humic substance (HS) could reduce herbicide-induced phytotoxicity in wheat, compared to herbicide application alone. Field trials were conducted using wheat cv. TBIO Ponteiro® in two separate experiments: trial #1 with pyroxsulam and trial #2 with 2,4-D. Bot

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profile Analysis of the Phospholipase C Gene Family in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Phospholipid-hydrolyzing enzymes include members of the phospholipase C (PLC) family that play important roles in regulating plant growth and responding to stress. In the present study, a systematic in silico analysis of the wheat PLC gene family revealed a total of 26 wheat PLC genes (TaPLCs). Phylogenetic and sequence alignment analyses divided the wheat PLC genes into 2 subfamilies, TaPI-PLC (containing the typical X, Y, and C2 domains) and TaNPC (containing a phosphatase domain). TaPLC expression patterns differed among tissues, organs, and under abiotic stress conditions. The transcript l

Inhibition of Cd accumulation in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in alkaline soil using mercapto-modified attapulgite.

Cd contamination in agricultural soils threatens the safety of agricultural products and poses human health risk via food chain. However, the remediation of Cd polluted alkaline soils has not drawn the public concern, and the corresponding efficient amendments that can reduce Cd accumulation in crop grains are relatively few. In current study, mercapto-modified attapulgite (MA in abbreviation) was selected as the amendment to conduct winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivation pot experiment to investigate the effect of MA on Cd accumulation in winter wheat and Cd bioavailability in alkali

Molecular characterization and dynamic expression patterns of two types of γ-gliadin genes from Aegilops and Triticum species.

Gliadins were the major components of wheat storage proteins and determine the extensibility properties of gluten dough. In this work, 19 new full-length γ-gliadin genes were isolated from various Aegilops and Triticum species. Sequence characterization showed that a specific octapeptide and celiac disease (CD)-toxic epitope Gliγ-3 (VQGQGIIQPQQPAQL) were present in the rich glutamine domain and C-terminal non-repetitive domain, respectively. Based on the sequence features of both peptides, a new classification system for γ-gliadin gene family was established, in which γ-gliadins were classifie

Metal ion binding properties of Triticum [corrected] aestivum Ec-1 metallothionein: evidence supporting two separate metal thiolate clusters.

Metallothioneins are ubiquitous low molecular mass, cysteine-rich proteins with an extraordinary high metal ion content. In contrast to the situation for the vertebrate forms, information regarding the properties of members of the plant metallothionein family is still scarce. We present the first spectroscopic investigation aiming to elucidate the metal ion binding properties and metal thiolate cluster formation of the Triticum [corrected] aestivum (common wheat) early cysteine-labeled plant metallothionein (Ec-1). For this, the protein was overexpressed recombinantly in Escherichia coli. Reco

Plant availability of nutrients recovered as solids from human urine tested in climate chamber on Triticum aestivum L.

Recovered nutrients by freezing-thawing from human urine in combination with struvite precipitation and nitrogen adsorption on zeolite and activated carbon have been tested in pot trials with wheat, Triticum aestivum L., in a climate chamber during 21 days. A simple test design using sand as substrate was chosen to give a first, general evaluation of the nutrient (P and N) availability from these sources. Dry weight, plant growth morphology, total-P and total-N were analysed. The tests show a slow-release of nutrients (P and N) from struvite and from N-adsorbents. The nitrogen in all treatment

The miR1118-TaCaM5-3A Module Regulates K+ Uptake and Enhances K+ Deficiency Tolerance in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Potassium (K+) deficiency significantly decreases the productivity of crops (e.g., wheat). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are master regulators of plant responses to stress, including K+ deficiency. In our previous study, miR1118 was identified as a Triticeae-specific miRNA that is highly expressed at multiple time points after exposure to K+ deficiency; however, the regulatory roles of miR1118 and its target gene TaCaM5-3A (calmodulin-encoding gene) in K+ uptake and tolerance to K+ deficiency remained unclear. In this study, miR1118 enhances the tolerance of wheat to K+ deficiency by improving K+ uptake

Integrative evolutionary and structural modeling of leaf rust resistance genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum subsp. and T. monococcum).

This study investigated the evolutionary relationships and molecular characteristics of selected genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum subsp.) using phylogenetic reconstruction and motif analysis. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using the Maximum Likelihood method, and conserved motif patterns were identified using ClustalW alignment and R-based analyses. The detection of a shared conserved motif across genes G3 to G11 at the same position suggests functional conservation, shared regulatory roles, or evolutionary constraint. Highly significant motifs identified in Gen1 and Gen2 indicate potent

Purification and Functional Characterization of the Chloroform/Methanol-Soluble Protein 3 (CM3) From Triticum aestivum in Drosophila melanogaster.

Non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) has been proposed to be an independent disease entity that is characterized by intestinal (e.g., abdominal pain, flatulence) and extra-intestinal symptoms (e.g., headache, fatigue), which are propagated following the ingestion of wheat products. Increased activity of amylase trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) in modern wheat is suggested to be major trigger of NCWS, while underlying mechanisms still remain elusive. Here, we aimed to generate and functionally characterize the most abundant ATI in modern wheat, chloroform/methanol-soluble protein 3 (CM3), in vitro and

Community Structure, Species Variation, and Potential Functions of Rhizosphere-Associated Bacteria of Different Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum) Cultivars.

Minimal tillage management of extensive crops like wheat can provide significant environmental services but can also lead to adverse interactions between soil borne microbes and the host. Little is known about the ability of the wheat cultivar to alter the microbial community from a long-term recruitment standpoint, and whether this recruitment is consistent across field sites. To address this, nine winter wheat cultivars were grown for two consecutive seasons on the same plots on two different farm sites and assessed for their ability to alter the rhizosphere bacterial communities in a minima

Antibiotics released into agricultural fields through the manure of grazing animals could exert harmful impacts on soil microbes and plants. Antibiotics exert high impacts on environment than other pharmaceuticals due to their higher biological activity. However, little is known about their impacts on plants, despite indications that antibiotics exert negative effects on soil microorganisms, which ultimately harm the plants. It has been demonstrated that beneficial microorganisms promote plant growth and development under various stresses. This study evaluated the toxicity of four newly derive

Prediction of Cd Accumulation in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Simulation Calculation of Lime or Zn Fertilizer Remediated Soil.

Soil Cd contamination to wheat raise wide concerns over food safety. It is essential to find the key factors affecting Cd accumulation in wheat and to establish a predictive model. The effects of pH, Zn, Ca, and DOM on the accumulation of Cd in wheat were investigated using hydroponic experiments. The results showed that Zn was the most important factor inhibiting Cd uptake in wheat. Models were developed to predict the Cd contents in wheat tissues based on the ion concentration. Meanwhile, the available Cd contents in soil were predicted using a geochemical multi-surface model (MSM) which is

Transcriptional Regulation of Metabolic and Cellular Processes in Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) in the Face of Temperature Increasing.

The Yaqui Valley, Mexico, has been historically considered as an experimental field for semiarid regions worldwide since temperature is an important constraint affecting durum wheat cultivation. Here, we studied the transcriptional and morphometrical response of durum wheat at an increased temperature (+2 °C) for deciphering molecular mechanisms involved in the thermal adaptation by this crop. The morphometrical assay showed a significant decrease in almost all the evaluated traits (shoot/root length, biovolume index, and dry/shoot weight) except in the dry root weight and the root:shoot ratio
