Human T-lymphotropic virus type I: A retrovirus causing chronic myeloneuropathies in tropical and temperate climates.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), the first human retrovirus to be isolated, is the cause of endemic tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). Originally, this chronic neurological disorder was described as a disease seen among blacks of low socioeconomic status living in tropical countries, and thus for many decades TSP remained a little known curiosity outside the endemic regions. The link between HTLV-I infection and TSP was made fortuitously, when antibodies to HTLV-I were found in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of TSP patients in Jamaica, Colombia, and Martinique. Soon thereafter

Climate Change, Urbanization, and the Emerging Urban Threat of Rift Valley Fever in Tropical and Subtropical Cities: A Narrative Review.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne zoonosis long regarded as a rural, pastoral disease, yet accelerating tropical urbanization and intensifying climate variability may be reshaping its epidemiology at the urban-peri-urban interface. This narrative review examines how global climate change and urban-specific climatic conditions jointly shape RVF virus (RVFV) vector habitats, transmission, and burden in tropical and subtropical cities, synthesizing 51 of 412 English-language records identified by a structured, non-systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, an

Five-year review of infections in a burn intensive care unit: High incidence of Acinetobacter baumannii in a tropical climate.

A 5-year review of nosocomial infections, bacteraemia and wound colonization in patients admitted to a burn intensive care unit from June 2001 to May 2006 was carried out. All patients required intubation at some point, and ICU support. Data on bacterial and fungal isolates were entered prospectively into a hospital-wide computerized database. Nosocomial infections (NIs) were defined using standard CDC criteria. Seventy-six patients were admitted during the study period, with 57 qualifying for analysis. Forty-two patients (74%) developed 137 NIs, with 240 NIs/100 admissions. The most common NI

Does climatic variation drive the adjustment of functional traits? An assessment of Tropical Montane Cloud Forest tree species.

INTRODUCTION: Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) host specialized plant species reliant on persistent atmospheric humidity, including fog immersion obligates and relict assemblages. Understanding anatomical and morphological adaptations in TMCF woody angiosperms is critical for elucidating their acclimation strategies to hydric stress under shifting fog regimes. This study investigates interspecific variability in wood and leaf traits among 10 TMCF tree species in Mexico's Medio Monte Natural Protected Area, hypothesizing that distinct anatomical strategies emerge in response to climatic s

Interannual variability of human plague occurrence in the Western United States explained by tropical and North Pacific Ocean climate variability.

Plague is a vector-borne, highly virulent zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It persists in nature through transmission between its hosts (wild rodents) and vectors (fleas). During epizootics, the disease expands and spills over to other host species such as humans living in or close to affected areas. Here, we investigate the effect of large-scale climate variability on the dynamics of human plague in the western United States using a 56-year time series of plague reports (1950-2005). We found that El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation in combinat

Observing super-coarse carbonaceous aerosol particles containing chloride in a tropical savanna climate at an agro-forest site in Thailand.

Coarse aerosol particles containing chloride in tropical forests are significant for understanding biogeochemical cycles and atmospheric processes, with implications for environmental health and climate change mitigation. This study explored the sources of super-coarse carbonaceous aerosol particles containing chloride in a tropical savanna climate. Aerosol samples were collected from an agro-forest site in Thailand during the dry season and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Assessment and mitigation of tangible flood damages driven by climate change in a tropical city: Hat Yai Municipality, southern Thailand.

Climate change-induced floods in tropical urban areas have presented a serious global challenge because of failed conventional stormwater management practices. This research aims to develop a comprehensive methodological framework for flood damage estimation and mitigation, particularly in a tropical urban city. In this study, interdisciplinary fields were integrated through statistical downscaling, hydrologic-hydraulic modeling, and the development of flood damage curves. Relationships between tangible flood damage and flood-borne outbreak with flood depths were elucidated to predict future d

Disentangling the effects of atmospheric CO2 and climate on intrinsic water-use efficiency in South Asian tropical moist forest trees.

Due to the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, the ratio of carbon fixed by assimilation to water lost by transpiration through stomatal conductance (intrinsic water-use efficiency, iWUE) shows a long-term increasing trend globally. However, the drivers of short-term (inter-annual) variability in iWUE of tropical trees are poorly understood. We studied the inter-annual variability in iWUE of three South Asian tropical moist forest tree species (Chukrasia tabularis A.Juss., Toona ciliata M. Roem. and Lagerstroemia speciosa L.) derived from tree-ring stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) in

Ambient climate and experimental drought strongly shape the richness and abundance of soil microbial communities in a tropical montane cloud forest.

Tropical montane forests are undergoing rapid climate change, with declining cloudiness and warming in higher elevations. While impacts on vegetation are increasingly documented, effects on belowground microbial communities and ecosystem processes remain poorly studied. We investigated how experimental drought and warming influence soil microbial communities and decomposition across a 900-m elevation gradient in the tropical montane forests of the Dominican Republic. Precipitation exclusion shelters simulated drought at high (2250 m a.s.l.) and low elevation (1350 m a.s.l.) and high elevation

Seasonal rhythm of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a tropical monsoon climate: Evidence for behavioral modulation of a seasonal biological marker.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] exhibits a seasonal pattern in temperate populations, typically peaking in late summer and declining in winter. It is still not clear whether this pattern also exists in tropical monsoon climates. To characterize the annual pattern of 25(OH)D in a tropical megacity and identify environmental synchronizers of its seasonal variation, a laboratory-based retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on 1,202 adult outpatients from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Serum 25(OH)D was measured with chemiluminescence immunoassay method. Thirty‑day moving averages of weather va

Efficiency of a bagasse substrate in a biological bed system for the degradation of glyphosate, malathion and lambda-cyhalothrin under tropical climate conditions.

BACKGROUND: After the rinsing of spray equipment, the rinsing water contains polluting products. One way to avoid pollution is to bring the rinsing water over a purification system, a biological bed. The system consists of an impermeable tub filled with a biomix substrate that facilitates biodegradation of pesticides. Usually, straw is one component of the biomix. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of an unusual substrate, bagasse, a residue of sugar cane, for the degradation of three pesticides, glyphosate, malathion and lambda-cyhalothrin. RESULTS: Results showed that

Genetic and sex influences on the regional distribution of acetylcholinesterase activity in the porcine brain and hypophyses under humid tropical climatic conditions.

The adaptability of one indigenous and four exotic breeds of pigs to the humid tropical climatic conditions of Ibadan was comparatively evaluated with acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) of brain and hypophyseal parts as the parameter. Significant breed differences were observed in the weight and AChE of the hypophyses and in the AChE of the brain parts. With regard to sex, only the relative adenohypophyseal weight and the AChE of the cerebellum and medulla oblongata were influenced. The results demonstrate the greater adaptability of the indigenous pigs to their native environment than the e

Effects of extreme climate events on tea (Camellia sinensis) functional quality validate indigenous farmer knowledge and sensory preferences in tropical China.

Climate change is impacting agro-ecosystems, crops, and farmer livelihoods in communities worldwide. While it is well understood that more frequent and intense climate events in many areas are resulting in a decline in crop yields, the impact on crop quality is less acknowledged, yet it is critical for food systems that benefit both farmers and consumers through high-quality products. This study examines tea (Camellia sinensis; Theaceae), the world's most widely consumed beverage after water, as a study system to measure effects of seasonal precipitation variability on crop functional quality

Assessing Tropical Cyclone-Driven Aerosol Transport - A High-Resolution WRF-Chem Analysis of Major Hurricane Matthew and Implications for Future Climate Scenarios.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are traditionally viewed as atmospheric cleansers, removing pollutants through precipitation and winds. However, emerging evidence suggests that TCs also transport pollutants over long distances, with their full impact on pollutant dynamics still underexplored. In this study, aerosol transport and chemical transformation during Hurricane Matthew (2016) are analyzed using high-resolution WRF-Chem simulations. The Hurricane-Driven Aerosol Transport Analysis Framework (WHDA-TAF) is developed to assess aerosol behavior under both current and future climate scenarios. Simula

Genomic and Physiological Basis of Structural and Foliar Trait Variation in Tropical Species Pterocarpus officinalis: Implications for Restoration in Future Drier Climates.

Tropical wetlands are some of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. Pterocarpus officinalis exists in swampy wetlands in riparian and fresh-water coastal areas across the neotropics, supporting biodiversity and storm surge and flooding protection as well as water filtration. In Puerto Rico, P. officinalis-dominated forests have been severely declining in recent decades, mainly due to land development. Reversing this trend in the face of climate change and projected sea level rise via ecological restoration may benefit from understanding phenotypic traits suitable for future climates. Cu
