Recent advances in tropical medicine.

There have been significant advances in both the classical and neglected tropical diseases, with Guinea worm looking set to be the next disease after smallpox to be eradicated. Aided by a combination of enhanced understanding of the biology of the pathogens, intensification of immunisation activities or mass drug administration, together with the development of synergies with control programmes for co-endemic tropical diseases, polio, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma and onchocerciasis all appear to be in global decline, with good prospects for eventual successful elimination. While the global i

Rapid identification of Mycobacterium avium ssp paratuberculosis laboratory strains by IS900-Nested polymerase chain reaction.

INTRODUTION: Mycobacterium avium ssp paratuberculosis (MAP) causes paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) in ruminants. As a species, M. avium comprises M. avium subsp. hominissuis and a number of clones that are known to have evolved from this subspecies, namely M. avium subsp. avium (MAA), M. avium subsp. silvaticum, and MAP. Despite the very high genomic similarity of MAP and MAA, the insertion sequence IS900, which is 1,451-bp long, is now understood to be exclusively present in 10-20 copies in the genome of MAP. In the present study, a multidiscipline polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based alg

Respiratory infections unique to Asia.

Asia is a highly heterogeneous region with vastly different cultures, social constitutions and populations affected by a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases caused by tropical pathogens. Asian patients with community-acquired pneumonia differ from their Western counterparts in microbiological aetiology, in particular the prominence of Gram-negative organisms, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Burkholderia pseudomallei and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the differences in socioeconomic and health-care infrastructures limit the usefulness of Western management guidelines for pneumonia in Asia.

Identification and genetic characterization of polyomaviruses in estrildid and fringillid finches.

Polyomavirus infections were detected in 40 companion bird individuals belonging to a broad species range of estrildid and fringillid finches and originating from 21 different bird aviaries. Based on partial virus protein 1 (VP1) sequences, the viruses were identified as Serinus canaria polyomavirus 1 and Pyrrhula pyrrhula polyomavirus 1. Serinus canaria polyomavirus 1 was found in 18 birds belonging to one estrildid and four fringillid species. Pyrrhula pyrrhula polyomavirus 1 was detected in 22 birds of six estrildid and three fringillid species. There was a large overlap in host range. Incr

Immune Responsiveness Induced by Administration of Heat-Inactivated M. bovis and BCG Prior to Experimental Infection in African Buffalo.

African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are the primary wildlife reservoir for bovine tuberculosis (BTB) in Africa. Infected buffalo populations spread BTB to numerous species in conservation areas as well as to cattle at park boundaries. Quarantine requirements for BTB complicate wild animal metapopulation management. Considerable interest has arisen in the vaccination of cattle and indigenous wildlife species against BTB as an additional control strategy. This pilot trial aimed to evaluate cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in African buffalo immunised against BTB. Twenty-one sub-adult Afr

Naturally Avian Influenza Virus-Infected Wild Birds Are More Likely to Test Positive for Mycobacterium spp. and Salmonella spp.

Wild birds often harbor infectious microorganisms. Some of these infectious microorganisms may present a risk to domestic animals and humans through spillover events. Detections of certain microorganisms have been shown to increase host susceptibility to infections by other microorganisms, leading to coinfections and altered host-to-host transmission patterns. However, little is known about the frequency of coinfections and its impact on wild bird populations. In order to verify whether avian influenza virus (AIV) natural infection in wild waterbirds was related to the excretion of other micro

[Assessment and prevention of zoonoses: "one health approach"].

Zoonotic pathologies represent diseases that can be transmittable from animals to humans and vice versa. In most cases zoonotic agents are bacteria or viruses and represent a huge problem for health. Zoonosis could represent easily solvable diseases such as simple infections or even deathly such as prion infections. They could be directly transmittable as tuberculosis or brucellosis or indirectly transmittable through vectors as biological fluids or foods from animal production. The increasing production and the globalization of animal food production have caused the spread of zoonosis worldwi

Recent advances in airborne pathogen detection using optical and electrochemical biosensors.

The world is currently facing an adverse condition due to the pandemic of airborne pathogen SARS-CoV-2. Prevention is better than cure; thus, the rapid detection of airborne pathogens is necessary because it can reduce outbreaks and save many lives. Considering the immense role of diverse detection techniques for airborne pathogens, proper summarization of these techniques would be beneficial for humans. Hence, this review explores and summarizes emerging techniques, such as optical and electrochemical biosensors used for detecting airborne bacteria (Bacillus anthracis, Mycobacterium tuberculo

Liberty to decide on dual use biomedical research: an acknowledged necessity.

Humanity entered the twenty-first century with revolutionary achievements in biomedical research. At the same time multiple "dual-use" results have been published. The battle against infectious diseases is meeting new challenges, with newly emerging and re-emerging infections. Both natural disaster epidemics, such as SARS, avian influenza, haemorrhagic fevers, XDR and MDR tuberculosis and many others, and the possibility of intentional mis-use, such as letters containing anthrax spores in USA, 2001, have raised awareness of the real threats. Many great men, including Goethe, Spinoza, J.B. Shaw

DECLINE OF GAME BIRDS (PHASIANUS COLCHICUS AND PERDIX PERDIX) IN BAVARIA: A SURVEY ON PATHOGENIC BACTERIA, PARASITES, PESTICIDE RESIDUES, AND INFLUENCE OF SET-ASIDE LAND AND MAIZE CULTIVATION.

Due to a Europe-wide decline of grey partridge ( Perdix perdix ) and pheasant ( Phasianus colchicus ) populations, this study was conducted focusing on the county of Bavaria, south Germany. The aim was to assess the health status of game birds and identify possible causes of decline. For this purpose 203 pheasants and 11 partridges were examined during the 2011 hunting season. Pathologic examinations were conducted including examinations for parasites and bacteria. Due to public health significance, a screening for Salmonella sp., as well as real-time polymerase chain reaction examinations for

Migratory Wave due to Conflicts: Risk of Increased Infection From Zoonotic Diseases.

Wars have devastating effects on all the components of the One Health approach: humans, animals, and ecosystems. Wars and the resulting migratory waves massively disrupt normal animal health services and surveillance. Among other consequences, they adversely impact the early detection, prevention, and control of animal diseases. Uncontrolled movement of animals or their undisposed carcasses, the destruction of wildlife habitats, and the increased interface between humans, wildlife, and domestic animals contribute to uncontrolled transmission and spread of zoonotic pathogens from animals to hum

IL-10 suppression of IFN-γ responses in tuberculin-stimulated whole blood from Mycobacterium bovis infected cattle.

The measurement of bovine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) forms the basis of a diagnostic test for bovine tuberculosis where Mycobacterium bovis sensitised effector T cells produce IFN-γ following in vitro stimulation with tuberculin antigens. In cattle infected with M. bovis it is also known that the anti-inflammatory IL-10 cytokine can inhibit in vitro production of IFN-γ leading to a reduced response in the IFN-γ diagnostic test. In order to investigate this in greater detail, whole blood samples from tuberculin skin test positive and negative cattle were stimulated with bovine and avian tuberculi

The evaluation of surveillance systems in veterinary public health: A scoping review on the attributes and assessment frameworks most commonly used.

Regular evaluation of disease surveillance programs is essential to ensure they provide reliable and useful information in an efficient manner. Surveillance systems' performance can be assessed using measurable characteristics, defined as attributes. This scoping review provides a global overview of the attributes and methodological frameworks used to assess veterinary public health surveillance systems over the past 15 years. A literature search was conducted on Pubmed and Scopus for studies published between 2010 and 2025, identifying 125 eligible studies, with 116 describing the evaluation

Community-acquired Pneumonia: A Global Perspective.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a global disease responsible for a large proportion of deaths and having significant economic cost. As diagnostic tools have increased in sensitivity, our understanding of the etiology of CAP has begun to change with a significant increase in confirmed viral infections and the recognition that multiple pathogens are frequently present. Empiric therapy remains the standard of care and guidelines are mostly based on published data from the United States or Europe. Blindly applying guidelines without any consideration of local etiological differences can lead

Use of a modified Delphi panel to identify and weight criteria for prioritization of zoonotic diseases in Switzerland.

Zoonotic diseases have a significant impact on public health globally. To prevent or reduce future zoonotic outbreaks, there is a constant need to invest in research and surveillance programs while updating risk management strategies. However, given the limited resources available, disease prioritization based on the need for their control and surveillance is important. This study was performed to identify and weight disease criteria for the prioritization of zoonotic diseases in Switzerland using a semi-quantitative research method based on expert opinion. Twenty-eight criteria relevant for d
