Electron-tailored amorphous nickel-tungsten boride catalysts for high-efficiency photothermal carbon dioxide methanation.

The urgent need for sustainable carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization has driven the development of photothermal catalysis as an efficient strategy for solar-driven CO2 methanation. Herein, we report an amorphous nickel‑tungsten boride (NiWB) catalyst that achieves exceptional conversion of CO2 to methane (CH4) under mild conditions without external heating. The optimized NiWB catalyst exhibits a remarkable CH4 production rate of 19.32 mmol g-1 h-1 with 92.50 % selectivity under full-spectrum illumination (2.0 W cm-2), surpassing most reported Ni-based catalysts. Structural and electronic character

Tungsten Oxide Dispersed on Silica as Robust and Readily Available Oxo/Imido Heterometathesis Catalyst.

Continuing our investigation of catalytic oxo/imido heterometathesis as novel water-free method for C=N bond construction, we report here the application of classical transition metal oxides dispersed on silica (MOx/SiO2, M=V, Mo, W) as cheap, robust and readily available alternative to the catalysts prepared via Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC). The oxide materials demonstrated activity in heterometathetical imidation of ketones, WO3/SiO2 being the most efficient. We also describe a new well-defined supported W imido complex (≡SiO)W(=NMes)2(Me2Pyr) (Mes=2,4,6-Me3C6H2, Me2Pyr=2,5-dimeth

Alkaloid Precipitant Reaction Inspired Controllable Synthesis of Mesoporous Tungsten Oxide Spheres for Biomarker Sensing.

Highly porous sensitive materials with well-defined structures and morphologies are extremely desirable for developing high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors. Herein, inspired by the classical alkaloid precipitant reaction, a robust and reliable active mesoporous nitrogen polymer sphere-directed synthesis method was demonstrated for the controllable construction of heteroatom-doped mesoporous tungsten oxide spheres. In the typical synthesis, P-doped mesoporous WO3 monodisperse spheres with radially oriented channels (P-mWO3-R) were obtained with a diameter of ∼180 nm, high specific surfac

Efficient bioaccumulation of tungsten by Escherichia coli cells expressing the Sulfitobacter dubius TupBCA system.

Tungsten (W) is a valuable element with considerable industrial and economic importance that belongs to the European Union list of critical metals with a high supply risk. Therefore, the development of effective and new methods for W recovery is essential to ensure a sustainable supply. In the present study, the Sulfitobacter dubius W transport system TupABC was explored in order to demonstrate both its functionality in Escherichia coli cells and to construct a bioaccumulator (EcotupW). The complete gene cluster tupBCA or partial gene cluster tupBC were cloned in an expression vector and trans

Maintenance of stellite and tungsten carbide saw tips: respiratory health and exposure-response evaluations.

OBJECTIVE: To study exposure to cobalt and chromium in saw maintenance rooms and test respiratory health among saw filers at lumber mills. Hard-metal lung disease is associated with cobalt in the manufacture of tungsten carbide tools; recently it has also been reported among tool maintenance workers. Lumber mills often use saws tipped with tungsten carbide or with a newer alloy, stellite (containing more cobalt, as well as chromium). METHODS: A cross sectional study of 118 saw filers at eight lumber mills was carried out that included a standardised questionnaire, spirometry, personal air sam

Interface Engineering of Hydrated Tungsten Oxide via Carbon Nitride for Durable Electrochromic Energy Storage.

Electrochromic smart windows demand high optical contrast, fast switching, long-term durability, and charge-storage functionality, yet hydrated tungsten oxides suffer from restricted ion transport and structural degradation during repeated ion insertion/extraction. Here, we present a carbon nitride-driven phase transformation strategy for a durable energy-storing electrochromic hydrated tungsten oxide. Under mild hydrogen annealing, orthorhombic WO3·H2O nanoplates containing an optimized 10 wt % carbon nitride (CNx) selectively transform into predominantly hexagonal WO3·0.33H2O nanorods (∼80%)

Tailoring Phase-Dependent Energy Storage in Nonstoichiometric Tungsten Oxide Nanostructures for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance.

The multivalent states of tungsten oxide offer multiple stoichiometric (WO3 and WO2) and nonstoichiometric WO x (2.72 ≤ x < 3) crystal structures. As x decreases in WO x , the reduced oxygen stoichiometry coincides with enhanced electronic conductivity and the emergence of structural channels within the unit cell. Despite these promising properties, most research has focused on WO3 due to the significant challenges in precisely synthesizing the various WO x phases. This study overcomes this limitation by employing a versatile resistive hot-wire oxidation (RHWO) method, enabling the precise eng

Oxygen vacancy tungsten oxide modified carbon cloth anode for enhancing microbial fuel cell performance.

To mitigate the adverse effects of binders in the anode of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and to enhance the performance of WO3 anodes, the WO3-X/CC, serving as a high-performance anode for MFCs, was developed using magnetron sputtering to apply tungsten oxide onto carbon cloth. The WO3-X/CC anode significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance (Rct) to 9.05 Ω, compared to 43.12 Ω for CC anode. The designed anode also enhances electron transport and extracellular electron transfer (EET), reaching a peak power density of 2644 mW m-2, which is 1.67 times greater than that of uncoated CC (1586

Ab initio machine-learning unveils strong anharmonicity in non-Arrhenius self-diffusion of tungsten.

The knowledge of diffusion mechanisms in materials is crucial for predicting their high-temperature performance and stability, yet accurately capturing the underlying physics like thermal effects remains challenging. In particular, the origin of the experimentally observed non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior has remained elusive, largely due to the lack of effective computational tools. Here we propose an efficient ab initio framework to compute the Gibbs energy of the transition state in vacancy-mediated diffusion including the relevant thermal excitations at the density-functional-theory level.

Subchronic oral exposure of tungsten induces myofibroblast transformation and various markers of kidney fibrosis.

Tungsten is a naturally occurring transition element used in a broad range of applications. As a result of its extensive use, we are increasingly exposed to tungsten from our environment, including potable water, since tungsten can become bioaccessible in ground sources. The kidneys are particularly susceptible to tungsten exposure as this is the main site for tungsten excretion. In this study, we investigated the prolonged effects of tungsten on the kidneys and how this may impact injury and function. When mice were exposed to tungsten in their drinking water for 1 mo, kidney function had not

Inhalation of Tungsten Metal Particulates Alters the Lung and Bone Microenvironments Following Acute Exposure.

Inhalation of tungsten particulates is a relevant route of exposure in occupational and military settings. Exposure to tungsten alloys is associated with increased incidence of lung pathologies, including interstitial lung disease and cancer. We have demonstrated, oral exposure to soluble tungsten enhances breast cancer metastasis to the lungs through changes in the surrounding microenvironment. However, more research is required to investigate if changes in the lung microenvironment, following tungsten particulate exposure, can drive tumorigenesis or metastasis to the lung niche. This study e

Biocompatibility of tungsten disulfide inorganic nanotubes and fullerene-like nanoparticles with salivary gland cells.

Impaired salivary gland (SG) function leading to oral diseases is relatively common with no adequate solution. Previously, tissue engineering of SG had been proposed to overcome this morbidity, however, not yet clinically available. Multiwall inorganic (tungsten disulfide [WS2]) nanotubes (INT-WS2) and fullerene-like nanoparticles (IF-WS2) have many potential medical applications. A yet unexplored venue application is their interaction with SG, and therefore, our aim was to test the biocompatibility of INT/IF-WS2 with the A5 and rat submandibular cells (RSC) SG cells. The cells were cultured a

Study of arsenopyrite weathering products in mine wastes from abandoned tungsten and tin exploitations.

Arsenopyrite-rich wastes from abandoned tungsten and tin exploitations were studied to determine the composition and characteristics of the secondary phases formed under natural weathering conditions so as to assess their potential environmental risk. Representative weathered arsenopyrite-bearing rock wastes collected from the mine dumps were analysed using the following techniques: X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, polarizing microscopy analysis, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and microRaman and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Scorodite, pharmacosiderite and amorphous ferric arsenates (

Feasibility of a Tungsten-181 HDR brachytherapy source: Analysis of isotope production and source dosimetry.

BACKGROUND: Interest in Intensity Modulated Brachytherapy (IMBT) for High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) treatments has steadily increased in recent years. However, intensity modulation is not best optimized for currently used HDR sources since they emit high energy photons. To that end, the focus on IMBT has moved to middle energy sources, such as Ytterbium-169; yet even Yb-169 emits some high energy photons at a low yield. We present an alternative isotope, Tungsten-181 (T1/2 = 121 days) that is interesting due to its complete lack of high energy photon emissions. (Eavg = 58.9 keV, Emed = 57.

eta(1)-N-succinimidato complexes of iron, molybdenum and tungsten as reversible inhibitors of papain.

Recently we have found that the metallocarbonyl complexes (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))M(CO)(x)(eta(1)-N-maleimidato) (M=Fe, Mo, W; x=2 or 3) bearing a maleimide function were irreversible inhibitors of the enzyme papain. To get further insight into the binding mechanism of these compounds we synthesized the related complexes (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))M(CO)(x)(eta(1)-N-succinimidato) (M=Fe, Mo, W; x=2 or 3) that lacked the ethylenic bond responsible for alkylation of the cysteine 25 thiol group in the papain's catalytic pocket. We performed kinetic studies of the interaction of the synthesized complexes towards pa
