[Solitary bone cysts of the ulna (author's transl)].

The solitary bone cysts occurs most frequently in the upper humerus and femur in 75% of the cases, and it is very seldom located in the ulna, in 0.5--1.5%. This report deals with the treatment results of two children, five and six years old, suffering from solitary bone cysts of the lower end of the ulna. In one case a subtotal resection of the cyst was carried out and the defect was bridged with an autologous iliac bone graft. In the other case the patient was treated by curettage, and the defect was filled in with an autologous bone graft and cancellous bone out of the tibia. In both cases c

[Ulna Impaction Syndrome - a critical review of the literature].

ABSTRACT: Ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS) is a frequent diagnosis for ulnar-sided wrist pain, traditionally understood as a mechanical overload condition resulting from positive ulnar variance. Established treatments typically focus on osseous decompression, primarily through ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) or the arthroscopic wafer procedure (AWP). ABSTRACT: This review critically evaluates the classical biomechanical paradigm of idiopathic UIS based on current literature, epidemiological data, and clinical outcomes. ABSTRACT: Current evidence demonstrates that congenital positive ulnar var

Adamantinoma of the ulna: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adamantinomas are rare, low-grade, malignant skeletal tumors accounting for only 0.33-0.48 % of primary malignant bone tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy with adamantinoma of the ulna was treated with en bloc resection, kryptonite bone cement, and plate fixation. The surgery resulted in marked pain relief and good functional recovery. No evidence of recurrence was observed for 5 years postoperatively, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score was 93. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: This case of an 11-year-old previously treated for an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC)

Treatment of diaphyseal non-unions of the ulna and radius.

INTRODUCTION: Non-unions of the forearm often cause severe dysfunction of the forearm as they affect the interosseus membrane, elbow and wrist. Treatment of these non-unions can be challenging due to poor bone stock, broken hardware, scarring and stiffness due to long-term immobilisation. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed a large cohort of forearm non-unions treated by using a uniform surgical approach during a period of 33 years (1975-2008) in a single trauma centre. All non-unions were managed following the AO-principles of compression plate fixation and autologous bone grafting if needed

Brodie's abscess of the ulna caused by Salmonella typhi.

Osteomyelitis caused by Salmonella typhi is rare in patients with no haemoglobinopathies or other diseases causing immunosuppression. Brodie's abscess is a special variety of subacute or chronic osteomyelitis. An otherwise healthy woman who presented with forearm swelling for 6 months was diagnosed with a Brodie's abscess of the ulna caused by Salmonella typhi. Magnetic resonance imaging and a computed tomography-guided needle biopsy were performed. She was later found to be a Salmonella carrier. The Brodie's abscess was treated by surgical debridement and a course of antibiotics. The clinical

Interventions for isolated diaphyseal fractures of the ulna in adults.

BACKGROUND: Isolated fractures of the shaft of the ulna, which are often sustained when the forearm is raised to shield against a blow, are generally treated on an out-patient basis. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of various forms of treatment for isolated fractures of the ulnar shaft in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register (November 2003), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 4, 2003), MEDLINE (1966 to November week 2 2003), EMBASE (1981 to 2003 week 51) and CINAHL (1982 to December

Pyoderma gangrenosum with a contiguous erosion of the distal ulna.

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) has been described in association with sterile neutrophilic infiltration of several organ systems, including the skeleton. The most frequent cause of bony disease in PG has been chronic, recurrent, multifocal osteomyelitis, a sterile inflammatory disease of children and young adults mimicking infectious osteomyelitis. Bony erosions have been only rarely described in direct contiguity to a PG ulcer. OBJECTIVE: We report a 53-year-old woman with recurrent PG who developed an erosion of the distal ulna adjacent to a PG ulcer. The patient responded to high-do

[The caput-ulnae-syndrome. Pathogenesis, clinic and therapy].

The ulnar head has a central function in stabilizing the wrist. In the treatment of caput ulnae syndrome, the radiocarpal joint must, therefore, always be considered. The integrity of the ulnar head and TFCC are of major importance for the rheumatoid wrist. Therefore, surgical treatment should be carried out early, and is indicated for drug-resistant synovitis and monarthritis of the wrist. Early synovectomy of the radiocarpal and distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) can be done as an open procedure or, when extensor tendon synovitis is absent, as an arthroscopic procedure. In most cases, however, t

Plate osteosynthesis of diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna.

Between January 1980 and December 1989, 133 consecutive patients were treated for a fracture of the shaft of one or both forearm bones (134 forearms in total). All fractures were stabilized with AO/ASIF 3.5 mm stainless-steel dynamic compression plates. The 1 year follow-up rate was 99 per cent; the long-term follow-up rate was 92 per cent (the mean long-term follow-up was 10.2 years (range, 2.7-15.2)) so there were 96 men and 35 women, with an average age of 37.5 years (range, 16-63). Twenty-two per cent of the forearms had open fractures, 26 per cent of patients had sustained multiple injuri

Operative management of fractures of the shaft of the radius and ulna.

Diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna usually can be managed by closed reduction and immobilization in a long arm cast. Open fractures may benefit from pinning if the reduction will be difficult to maintain. Fractures that cannot be reduced or for which satisfactory alignment maintained are best managed operatively. Our preference is for intramedullary fixation. Operative management will be necessary most frequently in children older than age 10.

Does Surgery Improve Healing After Isolated Diaphyseal Ulna Fractures?

PURPOSE: Isolated diaphyseal ulna fractures can be treated nonsurgically or with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). It is unclear whether ORIF provides quicker and/or more predictable healing. The purpose of this study was to compare the healing characteristics of isolated diaphyseal ulna fractures after surgical and nonsurgical treatment. METHODS: All patients treated for an isolated diaphyseal (distal- or middle-third) ulna fracture between 2010 and 2018, with a minimum of 3 months of follow-up, were identified. Electronic medical records were reviewed to record patient demographi

Stress fracture of ulna due to excessive push-ups.

Stress fractures are most common in the weight-bearing bones of the lower extremities and spine, but are rarely found in non-weight-bearing bones of the body. Stress fracture of the ulna is extremely rare. We report a case of complete stress fracture of ulna caused due to excessive push ups in a young athlete. Conservative management was successful in healing of fracture and returning this patient back to his previous activity level. Physician should have high index of suspicion, whenever they encounter a young athlete complaining of forearm pain.

Titanium elastic nailing radius and ulna fractures in adolescents.

Over the last 40 years, anatomic reduction with plate stabilization has become the standard in adult patients with diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna. When operative fixation has been indicated in skeletally immature patients with these fractures, a variety of techniques have been reported, with intramedullary fixation becoming increasingly accepted. There is currently significant variability in the treatment of adolescents with forearm fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes in the adolescent population after intramedullary fixat

Functional and radiographic outcomes following distal ulna implant arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: To determine the outcome of ulnar head endoprostheses in the treatment of distal radioulnar joint instability, arthrosis, or both. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 47 patients to analyze the outcome of a single ulnar head replacement over a 10-year period. All patients reported pain or instability at the distal radioulnar joint. Standardized assessments included a patient-rated pain score, forearm range of motion, grip strength, and Mayo wrist score. We examined preoperative and postoperative radiographs for final implant position, loosening, and osteolysis. RESULTS:
