Postoperative ulnar neuropathy as a result of mechanical trauma at the elbow was observed in eight patients undergoing renal transplantation. In five cases this occurred on arms that were adducted during the operation and in which an arteriovenous shunt was present. In four cases (one patient had the lesion bilaterally) the other, abducted arm was affected. Analysis of possible causes revealed no single factor responsible for the condition. Factors that most likely contributed were: pressure on the adducted arm by the combined weights of patient and surgeon, blood pressure monitoring with a cu

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity peripheral neuropathy is a known, but uncommon complication that can occur after shoulder surgery. The incidence rate is well documented, and most of these cases historically have been treated conservatively. However, we hypothesize peripheral compression neuropathy requires a much higher need for surgical decompression than originally reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, decompression rates, and prognostic factors for developing median and ulnar neuropathies following shoulder surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was perform

BACKGROUND: Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is an entrapment neuropathy, while ulnar nerve dislocation might also be involved in its incidence and severity. Wheelchair marathon athletes may be at an increased risk for Ulnar Neuropathy. However, there is a paucity of research into the prevalence of Ulnar Neuropathy and ulnar nerve dislocation in this population.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and ulnar nerve dislocation in wheelchair marathon athletes.
PARTICIPANTS: Wheelchair marathon athletes (N = 38) who participated in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Oita

The compound muscle action potential from the abductor digiti minimi muscle is bi-lobed, and its second peak is formed by far-field potentials (FFPs). We investigated their origin in two patients with ulnar neuropathy at the wrist that spared the hypothenar muscles. FFPs were lost or distorted, which indicated that the deep motor branch-innervated muscles, such as the interossei, mainly contributed to the FFPs, especially to their initial N1 and steep following P1 components.

BACKGROUND: Dental personnel have an increased prevalence of upper-extremity (UE) musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Military dental personnel report more UE MSK complaints than their civilian counterparts. Literature using nerve conduction studies (NCS) to diagnose UE neuropathy in dental personnel is lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the presence of electrodiagnostic abnormalities of the median and ulnar nerves in active duty military dental personnel assigned to Fort Sam Houston, TX.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is commonly encountered in clinical practice and is the second most common entrapment neuropathy. Left untreated, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow can result in significant disability due to loss of dexterity and grip strength secondary to the weakness of intrinsic hand muscles. Precisely localizing a lesion in ulnar neuropathy can be challenging with electrodiagnostic testing alone. Ultrasound is a relatively quick and useful adjunctive diagnostic modality in overcoming this limitation, as an increase in the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the nerve is a common and va

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the value of high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) in patients with ulnar neuropathy whose electrophysiology displayed an axonal, non-localizing pattern.
METHODS: A prospective study of patients referred to an electromyography laboratory for ulnar neuropathy was performed. Of the 56 patients with clinical and electrodiagnostic (EDx) evidence of ulnar neuropathy, 12 were identified with non-localizing electrophysiology who subsequently underwent HRUS of the ulnar nerve.
RESULTS: HRUS localized the ulnar neuropathy in all patients. In 2 patients

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the occurrence of Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) among alcohol dependent subjects.
METHOD: The study sample comprised 99 consecutive alcohol dependent subjects treated for detoxification voluntarily in the specialized unit of the Athens University Psychiatric Clinic in an inpatient basis.
RESULTS: UNE was found in 51 subjects (51.5%): in 40.4% on the right side, in 44.6% on the left and in 20.1% on both. Polyneuropathy was diagnosed in 41.4% of the total sample. Statistical analysis showed UNE significantly associated with age of the subjects, age at alcohol depe

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome and occurs most commonly at the elbow due to mechanical forces that produce traction or ischemia to the nerve. The primary symptom associated with UNE is diminished sensation or dysesthesias in the fourth or fifth digits, often coupled with pain in the proximal medial aspect of the elbow. Treatment may be conservative or surgical, but optimal management remains controversial. Surgery should include exploration of the ulnar nerve throughout its course around the elbow and release of

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to clarify the relationship between structural ulnar nerve changes and electrophysiological nerve dysfunction in patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE).
METHODS: High-resolution ultrasonography of the ulnar nerve was performed on 17 limbs with clinically and electrophysiologically confirmed UNE, and 52 control subjects at four standardised sites proximal and distal to the medial epicondyle (P2, P1, D1, D2), corresponding to segments of ulnar short-segment nerve conduction studies ("inching studies").
RESULTS: Ulnar nerve cross-sectional area (CSA

INTRODUCTION: In ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), we determined how electrodiagnostic cutoffs [across-elbow ulnar motor conduction velocity slowing (AECV-slowing), drop in across-elbow vs. forearm CV (AECV-drop)] depend on pretest probability (PreTP).
METHODS: Fifty clinically defined UNE patients and 50 controls underwent ulnar conduction testing recording abductor digiti minimi (ADM) and first dorsal interosseous (FDI), stimulating wrist, below-elbow, and 6-, 8-, and 10-cm more proximally. For various PreTPs of UNE, the cutoffs required to confirm UNE (defined as posttest probability =

Martin-Gruber anastomosis (MGA) is the most common nerve anastomosis in the upper extremities and it crosses from the median nerve to the ulnar nerve. Proximal MGA is an under recognized anastomosis between the ulnar and median nerves at or above the elbow and should not be missed during nerve conduction studies. We presented two patients with ulnar neuropathy mimicking findings including numbness and tingling of the 4th and 5th digits and mild weakness of intrinsic hand muscles. However, both cases had an apparently remarkable conduction block between the below- and above-elbow sites that was

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the value of extended motor nerve conduction studies in patients with ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (UNE) in order to find the most sensitive and least time-consuming method. We wanted to evaluate the utility of examining both the sensory branch from the fifth finger and the dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve. Further we intended to study the clinical symptoms and findings, and a possible correlation between the neurophysiological findings and pain.
METHODS: The study was prospective, and 127 UNE patients who were selected consecutively from the lis

BACKGROUND: Although ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most frequent focal peripheral neuropathy of the upper limb after carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), no figures on its prevalence or incidence in the general population have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of UNE in a general population.
METHODS: Retrospective study to identify newly diagnosed cases on the basis of clinical symptoms or signs and slowing of motor conduction velocity of the ulnar nerve across the elbow or surgical evidence of nerve compression in the elbow region. In the 5-year period from 1

Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disorder in which cartilaginous material is formed within synovial tissue. The cartilaginous nodules may undergo enchondral ossification, described as synovial osteochondromatosis. The nodules may be shed from the synovium and become intra-articular loose bodies. The presenting symptoms are usually diffuse discomfort in the affected joint and decreased range of motion with an accompanying gritty or locking sensation. The authors present the case of a young man with elbow synovial osteochondromatosis associated with ulnar nerve neuropathy.

Many cases of work related compression neuropathy of the ulnar and median nerves at the wrist have been described. This report presents a case of bilateral distal neuropathy of the median and ulnar nerves in a parquet floorer, who laid wooden block flooring by hand and used the palms and volar surface of both hands to hit the blocks into place. He also used an electric sander and polisher. Bilateral numbness and paraesthesias in all fingers had been present for about one year. Clinical examination was normal; the neurological assessment indicated slight impairment in response to tactile, heat,
