Diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography for the prenatal diagnosis of esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula.

Ultrasound is recommended as a first-line requirement prior to MRI or amniotic fluid analysis, which have high diagnostic accuracy for esophageal atresia (EA). Therefore, the aim of the present prospective study was to evaluate the accuracy of high-performance ultrasound for the prenatal examination of EA/tracheoesophageal fistula (TOF). In total, 64 pregnant women with fetuses suspected of having EA/TOF participated in the study. The gestational age of the fetuses ranged between 16 and 40 weeks, with a mean of 26.33±3.57 weeks. Ultrasound images of the esophagus and trachea on parasternal and

Prenatal ultrasonography and postnatal follow-up of a case of McKusick-Kaufman syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). It is very difficult to diagnose MKS prenatally because of overlapping manifestations and associated anomalies with other syndromes. Herein, we present a case of MKS with prenatal ultrasound illustrating a fetal abdominal cystic mass. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman, gravida 3 para 2, was referred to our obstetrics clinic at 34 weeks' gestation for fetal abdominal cyst detected by prenatal ultrasound. Our ultrasound illustrated a fetal abd

[Utility of fetal ultrasonography in the prenatal diagnosis of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome].

Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder which diagnosis is usually made postnatally. We describe a case of a prenatal diagnosis based only on specific ultrasound findings: intra-uterine growth retardation with facial dysmorphia, polydactyly and genital anomalies. We suggest giving more consideration to the ultrasound scanning for the diagnosis of the syndrome in the prenatal period.

Prenatal identification of esophageal atresia: the role of ultrasonography for evaluation of functional anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: To suggest a new ultrasonographic approach for prenatal diagnosis of esophageal atresia (EA). METHODS: Since 1995, whenever EA is suspected, we perform a systematic multiplanar ultrasonographic scanning of the fetal upper body in order to demonstrate an esophageal pouch. This includes three image plans of the neck and upper chest: coronal, sagittal and axial views in the cephalic direction. The scan time is 20-30 min. RESULTS: Twenty-five pregnant patients were referred during the period under study for prenatal examinations due to polyhydramnios and/or absent or small stomach. In

[Prenatal diagnosis of thanatophoric dysplasia at the 20th week of pregnancy using ultrasonography].

We report on prenatal diagnosis of a fetus with thanatophoric dysplasia type 1 at 20 weeks gestation. The ultrasonographic examination showed shortened bowed limbs, narrow chest, relatively large head, protuberant abdomen, and hydramnios. Radiological and histological studies confirmed the aborted fetus had thanatophoric dysplasia. The differential prenatal diagnosis with other skeletal dysplasia is discussed.

Prenatal diagnosis of spontaneous rupture of the fetal bladder with color Doppler ultrasonography.

Rupture of the fetal-neonatal bladder that results in urinary ascites has rarely been reported in the literature. In this report we present the first case of spontaneous rupture of the fetal bladder in which the diagnosis was made prenatally by means of color Doppler ultrasonography.

Prenatal ultrasonography diagnosis of fetal microtia with tympanic ring agenesis: a case report.

Microtia is frequently accompanied by middle ear anomalies, among which absence of the tympanic ring is relatively rare and seldom diagnosed prenatally. Previous reports have mainly focused on external ear anomalies, with limited experience in the prenatal diagnosis and postnatal verification of middle ear osseous abnormalities. We report a case of fetal microtia complicated by absence of the tympanic ring diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound. A systematic examination at 24 weeks of gestation revealed abnormal unilateral auricular morphology, with size and shape inconsistent with a normal fetus at

Successful visualisation of foetal tracheo-oesophageal fistula in oesophageal atresia with prenatal ultrasonography.

This is the first report describing successful visualisation of a tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TEF) based on fluid flow on prenatal foetal ultrasonography. At 36 weeks of gestation, an anechoic tubular structure with a strong blue-coloured stream of fluid flow was observed extending from the trachea towards the gastric bubble on prenatal ultrasonography. TEF can be visualised prenatally under certain conditions.

Prenatal screening for neural tube defects: from maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein to ultrasonography.

The two main screening tests during pregnancy are those for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects (NTDs). In particular, for NTDs, measurement of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) levels early in the second trimester (15-18 weeks of gestation) has been considered the gold standard screening test for the past 4 decades. However, with remarkable technological advancements and the widespread use of ultrasound during those periods, mid-trimester ultrasonography has gradually replaced the role of measuring MSAFP levels as a screening method for NTDs. This change was initiated mor

Prenatal ultrasonography of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease mimicking recessive type: case series.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited renal disease. This pathology has been increasingly diagnosed in utero and several sonographic patterns are well described in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To present a series of fetuses with an unusual imaging pattern of ADPKD, mimicking autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed second-line ultrasound (US) scans performed for suspicion of fetal kidney pathology between 2006 and 2018. Inclusion criteria were (1) proven ADPKD on the basis o

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital syphilis using two- and three-dimensional ultrasonography: case report.

The numbers of syphilis cases have been increasing considerably, especially in eastern europe, thereby contributing towards greater chances of cases of congenital syphilis. Some of the complications of congenital syphilis can be detected on two-dimensional ultrasonography (2DUS), and these are generally manifested in the second trimester of pregnancy. The commonest ultrasonographic signs are hepatosplenomegaly, placentomegaly, and fetal growth restriction, while lower-frequency occurrences include intrahepatic calcifications, ascites, fetal hydrops, and even fetal death. Three-dimensional ultr

Prenatal diagnosis of fetal corpus callosum agenesis by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) was evaluated by ultrasound examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 14 cases. Ultrasonography was able to suspect CCA by indirect signs but a definitive diagnosis of CCA was achieved in only four cases. MRI was able to diagnose complete CCA in 13 cases and showed absence of the posterior portion of the corpus callosum in one case. Additional neurological abnormalities including heterotopia, gyration anomaly, asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres, and Dandy-Walker variant were documented in five cases, as well as an ocular anomaly which was present in

Clinical outcomes of fetal ovarian masses diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography and literature review.

With the advancement of prenatal examination technology, more and more fetus with ovarian masses are diagnosed. However, whether such children need intervention measures after delivery, there is no more unified diagnosis and treatment measures in the world. In this study, postnatal data and clinical outcome of fetal diagnosed with ovarian masses were analyzed. We also combined with relevant literature to explore the postpartum intervention measures and timing of such children. A total of 57 cases of abdominal masses from the reproductive system were included in the study. These children were d

Prenatal three dimensional ultrasonography and expectant management of placental chorioangioma: a case report.

A 24-year-old Thai woman presented with large for date. Two dimensional (2D) and Doppler ultrasonography revealed a large placental mass with prominent vasculature suggestive of chorioangioma with polyhydramnios. Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography was used to demonstrate the better images for parental counseling. Close observation with serial ultrasonography was chosen with spontaneous decreasing of amniotic fluid. On the follow up, six months after birth, the baby had hepatic hemangioma, which responded to corticosteroid and propanoral. Although, there are several invasive therapeutic tre

Prenatal Diagnosis of Lethal Multiple Pterygium Syndrome Using Two-and Three-Dimensional Ultrasonography.

Lethal multiple pterygium (LMP) is a series of disorders of fetal formation with a heterogeneous range of manifestations that generally include cystic hygroma, pulmonary hypoplasia, cleft palate, cryptorchidism, joint contractures, fetal akinesia, heart defects, growth restriction, and intestinal malrotation. The prenatal diagnosis of this syndrome is suspected when two-dimensional ultrasound (2DUS) scan shows several malformations.. The three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) in rendering mode permits the spatial visualization of these malformations, allowing better understanding of this anomaly
