BACKGROUND: A retained surgical sponge, also known as a gossypiboma, is a rare cause of serious postoperative complications. Diverse retained surgical materials including instruments such as clamps and sutures have been reported, but surgical sponges are the most common material. Urachal adenocarcinoma represents the third most common histological type of non-urotelial bladder cancer. We experienced two cases of neurogenic bladder in which clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) had been performed since early childhood. In both cases, CIC had not provided adequate voiding control and incontinence persisted.
