Missed opportunities to prevent tuberculosis in foreign-born persons, Connecticut, 2005-2008.

SETTING: Factors that influence testing for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among foreign-born persons in Connecticut are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors for LTBI testing and challenges related to accessing health care among the foreign-born population in Connecticut. DESIGN: Foreign-born Connecticut residents with confirmed or suspected tuberculosis (TB) disease during June 2005-December 2008 were interviewed regarding health care access and immigration status. Predictors for self-reported testing for LTBI after US entry were determined. RESULTS: Of 161 foreign-

Cost-effective treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia for an undocumented and uninsured New York City patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: New York City has a heterogeneous population with many undocumented and uninsured immigrants from equatorial areas who have a higher incidence of ocular surface squamous neoplasia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented selection of this cost-effective treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (the use of absolute ethanol along the corneal margin, primary excision, double freeze-thaw cryopexy, and primary conjunctival closure) for an undocumented and uninsured New York City patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old man from Ecuador presented to a New York

Prolonged family separation under U.S. immigration law: Mechanisms of racialized harms to lawfully present immigrant parents.

Prolonged family separation in the context of immigration to the United States has largely focused on separation resulting from immigrant detention and the deportation of undocumented parents. Less visible are the ways that U.S. immigration laws and policies are constructed and implemented such that they prolong family separation for lawfully present immigrants in the United States from their families abroad. This article addresses this gap. The detrimental effects of prolonged family separation in the context of immigration are discussed. Three key immigration law mechanisms that prolong fami

State-Funded Health Insurance Expansion for Noncitizen Immigrants and Hospital Uncompensated Care.

IMPORTANCE: Undocumented and many noncitizen immigrants are largely excluded from federally funded health insurance programs, creating substantial gaps in health coverage and financial strain on safety-net hospitals that disproportionately serve these populations through uncompensated care. Several states have implemented state-funded health coverage expansions for immigrants, but the financial implications of these policies remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors (HBIS) and Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA) programs in Illinois

Dignity of Work and at Work: The Relationship between Workplace Dignity and Health among Latino Immigrants during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Latino immigrants living in the United States were highly vulnerable to the health and economic consequences brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We use the conceptual framing of workplace dignity, worth that is acknowledged based on performance of job responsibilities, to explore Latino immigrants' experiences during the early months of the pandemic. A qualitative study was conducted with La Clínica del Pueblo (La Clínica), a community health center serving low-income Latino immigrants. From June to December 2020, we conducted in-depth video interviews with 29 Latino immigrant clients to expl

End-of-Life Care for Unauthorized Immigrants in the U.S.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes the inherent dignity, the equal and unalienable rights to be universally protected for all humans irrespective of race, color, gender, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Though this includes the right to dignity-conserving care for terminally ill unauthorized immigrants, access to quality end-of-life care eludes them. Most of the estimated 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants either entered the country without the knowledge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcemen

Impact of anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies on frontline health and social service providers in Southeast Michigan, U.S.A.

Rising hostility towards immigrants characterised the 2016 Presidential election in the United States (US) and subsequent policy priorities by the new presidential administration. The political shift towards aggressive policies targeting undocumented immigrants is far-reaching and extends into other communities that convive con-or coexist with-immigrant communities. Our study aims to examine the rippling effects of these anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric on health and social service providers in Southeast Michigan who predominantly serve Latino immigrants. Between April and August 2018, we

Palliative Care for Immigrants With Cancer in the United States: A Roadmap to Equitable Care.

Across the U.S., immigrants with cancer, especially those who are undocumented or from low-income backgrounds, encounter significant barriers to accessing quality palliative care. Despite cancer comprising over one-third of global palliative care needs, immigrant patients are often excluded from essential services due to lack of insurance, immigration status, limited English proficiency, and culturally discordant care models. These challenges contribute to delayed diagnoses, inadequate symptom management, and lower quality of end-of-life care. This narrative review identifies both patient-leve

Outcomes of Elective Outpatient Hysteroscopic Sterilization in Undocumented Women: A Retrospective Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of hysteroscopic sterilization in low-income and unauthorized immigrant women when financial barriers to care are removed. METHODS: Outpatient hysteroscopic sterilization for low-income women at an urban clinic was made possible by grant funding. All procedures were performed by obstetrician/gynecologist attending physicians or supervised trainees. Electronic records were reviewed for cases performed from June 2010 to December 11, 2013. Outcome incidences and complications were determined. Subgroup analyses using demographic and clinical factors were pe

A study of HIV positive undocumented African migrants' access to health services in the UK.

Newly immigrated persons, whatever their origin, tend to fall in the lower socioeconomic levels. In fact, failure of an asylum application renders one destitute in a large proportion of cases, often resulting in a profound lack of access to basic necessities. With over a third of HIV positive failed asylum seekers reporting no income, and the remainder reporting highly limited resources, poverty is a reality for the vast majority. The purpose of the study was to determine the basic social processes that guide HIV positive undocumented migrant's efforts to gain health services in the UK. The st

Adapting the Andersen model to a francophone West African immigrant population: hepatitis B screening and linkage to care in New York City.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly endemic in West Africa and immigration from this region to the United States has greatly increased over the past quarter century. Using the Andersen Model as a conceptual framework, this study qualitatively examines francophone West African immigrants' perceptions of factors affecting access to HBV screening and linkage-to-care in New York City. Four focus groups were conducted with 39 purposefully selected participants. The focus groups were conducted in French, audio-recorded, translated into English, transcribed, analyzed, and coded for major themes. Partic

Psychological homelessness and enculturative stress among US-deported Salvadorans: a preliminary study with a novel approach.

The purpose of this study was to examine the construct psychological homelessness-feelings of not belonging in one's home country-within the context of deported Salvadorans' enculturation to El Salvador. Participants (n = 66) who had been deported from the United States completed a set of questionnaires related to their deportation experience. Results indicated that deportees, in various degrees, experienced the phenomenon of psychological homelessness and enculturative stress related to living in El Salvador. As hypothesized, enculturative stress related to re-adapting to life in El Salvador

Perinatal mortality among pregnant undocumented migrants in Norway 1999-2020: A register-based population study.

BACKGROUND: Irregular legal status is a recognized health risk factor in the context of migration. However, undocumented migrants are rarely included in health surveys and register studies. Adverse perinatal outcomes are especially important because they have long-term consequences and societal risk factors are modifiable. In this study, we compare perinatal outcomes in undocumented migrants to foreign-born and Norwegian-born residents, using a population-based register. METHODS: We included women 18-49 years old giving birth to singletons as registered in the Medical Birth Registry of Norway

North of Home: Obligations to Families of Undocumented Patients.

Undocumented and undomiciled, Gustavo Jiménez had been in the United States for several years. He knew his leg wasn't right when it began to swell and redden. After the cellulitis spread to his bloodstream, he was found unconscious on the street and admitted to the intensive care unit. He improved quickly and was soon able to tell a social worker his name and that he had family in Quito. Then his health took a turn for the worse, and he developed multisystem organ failure. His doctors believed his prognosis grave and further care futile. They wanted to invoke a provision under their state's la

Utilizing an ecological framework to integrate social identities and sociopolitical analysis in psychotherapy.

This article explores how the political events from the past year have influenced psychotherapeutic sessions with a female adolescent who is Peruvian, undocumented, and initially presented with symptoms of anxiety and a history of trauma. Focusing on this case example and utilizing an ecological framework, this article explores how the social identities of the therapist and their relation to power and privilege impact the therapeutic interventions that were chosen and not chosen. Additionally, there is a review of the benefits of consultation with a colleague of differing social identities and

Intersecting Identities and Mental Health Access Among African-Born Black Young Adults in Canada: A Narrative Review.

Black immigrant young adults of African descent (BIYAD), defined here as African-born Black young adults aged 18 to 34 living in Canada, are a growing yet persistently underserved population facing mental health challenges at a formative life stage. Despite elevated distress and documented underutilisation of services, they remain largely absent from the Canadian literature as a distinct group. This narrative review synthesises evidence on the demographic context, intersecting identities and multilevel barriers shaping mental health access among BIYAD. Drawing on intersectionality theory and L

A national registry study evaluated the landscape of kidney transplantation among presumed unauthorized immigrants in the United States.

Unauthorized immigrants and permanent residents may experience challenges in accessing kidney transplantation due to limited healthcare access, socioeconomic and cultural barriers. Understanding the United States (US) national landscape of kidney transplantation for non-citizens may inform policy changes. To evaluate this, we utilized two cohorts from the US national registry (2013-2023): 287,481 adult candidates for first transplant listing and 190,176 adult first transplant recipients. Citizenship was categorized as US citizen (reference), permanent resident, and presumed unauthorized immigr

Systematic review of risk factors for nonadherence to TB treatment in immigrant populations.

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born populations carry a significant TB burden in low-prevalence countries, composing over half of all cases in parts of Europe and North America. This study systematically reviewed evidence of risk factors for nonadherence to TB drug therapy in this group. METHODS: On 28 October 2013 MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsychINFO and ProQuest were systematically searched for studies examining adherence in foreign-born populations with TB. Grey literature and reference lists were hand-searched. Risk factor studies were selected for inclusion if they consisted of at least 95% foreign-b
