[Monkey pox virus infection in humans in the Central African Republic].

A human monkeypox outbreak is reported which occurred in January 1984 in the extreme south-west areas of the Central African Republic. Six persons were found to be affected in a Pygmy camp with an estimated population of 50 residents. In the two affected families, out of 11 members, only unvaccinated children and a 22 year old unvaccinated woman contracted the disease. The disease was of moderate severity in two patients and very mild in the other four. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by virus isolation from skin lesions of 4 patients and by sero-immunologic tests in all of them. The clin

Association between regular physical activity and pneumonia-related hospitalization according to pneumococcal vaccination status: The VENUS study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of physical activity (PA) and PPSV23 vaccination on pneumonia-related hospitalizations. This study examined the association between regular PA and pneumonia-related hospitalization according to PPSV23 vaccination status in older adults. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using health checkup data, medical care claims data, and vaccination records from two Japanese municipalities. Residents aged ≥65 years who had undergone a health checkup between April 2016 and March 2021 were categorized into a PPSV23 vaccinated or unvaccinated

High seroprevalence of multiple high-risk human papillomavirus types among the general population of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, Caribbean Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Incidence and mortality of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers differs geographically, with high rates in Caribbean countries. Seroepidemiological data provide information on lifetime cumulative HPV exposure and contributing risk factors, but has not been available yet for Caribbean Netherlands (CN), comprising the islands Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. Therefore, a cross-sectional population-based serosurveillance study was performed in this (recently girls-only HPV-vaccinated) population in 2017. METHODS: Blood samples from participants (n = 1,823, 0-90 years) were test

Immunity to poliomyelitis in The Netherlands.

Despite a vaccination coverage rate of 97%, several poliomyelitis outbreaks occurred in the Netherlands during the last three decades, all among sociogeographically clustered, unvaccinated persons. Therefore, to eradicate polio, insight into poliomyelitis immunity is particularly useful. In 1995-1996, the authors conducted a population-based study and determined neutralizing antibodies against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in 9,274 sera from the general population and from religious groups rejecting vaccination. In the general population, the antibody prevalence (>/=1:8) was 96.6% (95% confiden…

Rotavirus Vaccine Coverage and Potential Barriers Among US Children Born From 2007 to 2024.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends the first dose of rotavirus vaccine (RVV) be delivered by a maximum age of 14 weeks, 6 days and that the vaccine not be delivered until time of discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We hypothesized that these guidelines limit the number of children who can be vaccinated with RVV. METHODS: Children born on or after January 1, 2007, enrolled in the New Vaccine Surveillance Network from December 2014 to August 2024 aged at least 15 weeks with rotavirus-negative acute gastroenteritis or as a healt

Hepatitis B Non-Vaccination Rate and Associated Factors Among Healthcare Workers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a significant occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where vaccination coverage is often suboptimal. This review examined the non-vaccination rate against HBV among HCWs in LMICs. We conducted a systematic search across multiple databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, for studies published from the inception up to 04 Feb 2024. Non-vaccination (NV) was defined as the absence of any hepatitis B vaccination dose as reported by individual studies. Pooled NV rates were

Concurrent diphtheria and COVID-19 infection in an unvaccinated child.

We report the case of a girl in her middle childhood who presented with progressive neck swelling, sore throat, dysphagia, low-grade fever and malaise, and with no prior vaccinations. Examination revealed a 'bull neck' appearance with pseudomembranous pharyngitis, which showed bleeding on membrane removal. The patient did not have any respiratory distress, but RT-PCR confirmed the concurrent coinfection of DPT with SARS-CoV-2. The laboratory investigations exhibited a leucocyte count of 17.2 × 10⁹/L and ALT raised at 113 U/L, indicative of systemic involvement. Imaging showed mild tonsillar ca

Measles outbreak in a unique sociocultural context: epidemiological investigation and control measures in Northern Brazil, 2025.

After the recertification of measles elimination in Brazil, outbreaks associated with imported cases may occur in pockets of susceptible individuals, including communities with low vaccination coverage. This study describes an outbreak investigation conducted in 2025 in Campos Lindos, Tocantins State, Brazil. In total, 25 cases were confirmed, mostly among unvaccinated Old Believers (a traditional community of Russian origin) following viral introduction linked to international travel, with transmission occurring predominantly within the community. Outbreak response measures, including ring va

Quantifying the counter-intuitive effects of vaccination by coupling the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 and the evolution of human behaviors.

Vaccination is widely used to control the spread of infectious diseases. However, there is substantial evidence suggesting that the perceived immunity from vaccine drives the decrease of risk-awareness among vaccinated individuals, which results in the paradoxical increase of transmission risk, consequently leads to the counter-intuitive outcomes in disease control in the case of low vaccine effectiveness. In this study, we propose a novel method to quantify the counter-intuitive effects of vaccination in a complex environment with integrated dynamic factors. To this end, we begin by linking s

Identification of unvaccinated children, Madagascar.

PROBLEM: Madagascar has a high number of unvaccinated (zero-dose) children. In 2023, an estimated 74% received any dose of the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine. In southern Madagascar, service gaps, poverty, drought and limited access leave many children unreached by routine immunization. APPROACH: Within the Sorohy ny Aretina Manaova Ezaka Vaksiny initiative, a community-based enumeration and vaccination-status verification was conducted in 16 districts in August 2024-June 2025 under health ministry authorization. A total of 3975 community health workers (CHWs) were recruited and t

[COVID-19 and Lupus Nephritis Flares in Unvaccinated Patients: A Case Report and Literature Review].

Viral infections are one of the most common triggers of Systemic Lupus Nephritis (SLE) flare-ups. COVID-19 pneumonia can be severe in patients affected by SLE representing a risk factor for lupus nephritis flare. We report the case of a 28-year-old woman with a history of lupus nephritis (LN), who relapsed with severe nephritic-nephritic syndrome after the resolution of COVID-19 pneumonia. In addition, we conducted a literature review to analyze all described cases of LN, vaccinated and unvaccinated, in COVID-19 showing that the course of COVID-19 is more severe in SLE patients with renal invo

Tick-borne encephalitis in a 17-day-old newborn resulting in severe neurologic impairment.

The reported cases of infant tick-borne encephalitis give the impression that the morbidity in this age group is negligible. We describe the first report of infection in the neonatal period that resulted in severe neurologic impairment. All persons living in or traveling to endemic areas should be protected by vaccination. This applies equally and especially to women of childbearing age. Transplacental transfer of antibody after vaccination has been observed and could provide protection to unvaccinated newborns preventing or alleviating the potential devastating impact of this disease.
