Uranium dioxide (UO2) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO2 particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively. Particles were exposed to each fluid at 37°C for up to 180 days (SLF) and 900 days (ALF). In SLF, UO2 showed low ap

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are important but often overlooked regulators of uranium (U) cycling in soil. However, the impact of PSB on uranate fixation coupled with the decomposition of recalcitrant phosphorus (P) in mining land remains poorly understood. Here, we combined gene amplicon sequencing, metagenome and metatranscriptome sequencing analysis and strain isolation to explore the effects of PSB on the stabilization of uranate and P availability in U mining areas. We found that the content of available phosphorus (AP), carbonate-U and Fe-Mn-U oxides in tailings was significantl

Two new diglycolamides bearing benzyl substituents on the amide moieties-N,N'-dibutyl-N,N'-dibenzyldiglycolamide and N,N'-dibenzyl-N, N'-diphenyldiglycolamide were synthesized. The extraction of f-element cations and a number of associated metals by these compounds was also studied. A significant influence of the amide fragment structure on the extraction ability, selectivity, and composition of the extracted complexes was demonstrated. Conditions were found for the purification of An(III) and An(IV) from uranium and most fission products. The complex formation of f-elements (using Nd) with th

By the introduction of terephthalic acid, tetramethylammonium chloride, and Zn2+ ions, three new uranyl triphosphonates with varying crystal structures, namely, [H3O][(UO2)2(HL)]·H2O (1), [NMe4][(UO2)2(HL)(H2O)]·H2O (2), and [(UO2)3Zn(H2L)2(H2O)2]·3H2O (3), where H6L = benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(methylene) triphosphonic acid, have been successfully synthesized and characterized by means of powder and single crystal XRD, IR, EA, TGA, UV-vis, and luminescence. These three compounds all possess three-dimensional framework structures with hydrium, tetramethylammonium, and Zn2+ as the respective count

Uranium dioxide (UO2), the primary fuel for commercial nuclear reactors, incorporates excess oxygen forming a series of hyperstoichiometric oxides. Thin layers of these oxides, such as UO2.12, form readily on the fuel surface and influence its properties, performance, and potentially geologic disposal. This work reports a rapid and straightforward combustion process in uranyl nitrate-glycine-water solutions to prepare UO2.12 nanomaterials and thin films. We also report on the investigation of the structural changes induced in the material by irradiation. Despite the simple processing aspects,

This study addresses the energy-intensive nature of conventional wastewater treatment processes and proposes a solution through the development of a green, low-energy, and multifunctional wastewater treatment technology. The research focuses on a multifunctional self-driven photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system, exploring its four-in-one applications in eliminating organic pollutants, reducing U(VI), generating electrical energy, and disinfecting pathogenic microorganisms. A TiO2-decorated carbon felt (CF@TiO2) cathode is synthesized to enhance interfacial charge transfer, with TiO2 coating impro

PURPOSE: Personnel experiencing accidents that involve radionuclides or victims of potential malicious radioactive attacks may suffer injuries with wounds contaminated by radionuclides. The current treatment for contamination from uranium in external injuries is the use of saline solution to wash the wounds, which has the drawback of further spreading of the contaminants due to the flow of water. To minimize the cost of storage of contaminated liquids and to improve the efficiency of treatment, we propose the use of hydrogels as a form of decorporation agent.
METHODS: Mice with uranium-contam

The goal of this study was to characterize how depleted uranium (DU) causes DNA damage. Procedures were developed to assess the ability of organic and inorganic DNA adducts to convert to single-strand breaks (SSB) in pBR322 plasmid DNA in the presence of heat or piperidine. DNA adducts formed by methyl methanesulfonate, cisplatin, and chromic chloride were compared with those formed by reaction of uranyl acetate and ascorbate. Uranyl ion in the presence of ascorbate produced U-DNA adducts that converted to SSB on heating. Piperidine, which acted on DNA methylated by methyl methanesulfonate to

Bioreduction is considered to be one of the most effective methods for the bioremediation of uranium-contaminated soil or water, in which the low extracellular electron transfer (EET) rate of microorganisms seriously affects the reduction and fixation of uranium through microorganisms. Here, we develop an in-situ self-regenerable Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens)-FeS biohybrid system to enhance the efficiency of uranium reduction. The dense layer of bio-FeS on the cell surface of S. putrefaciens provides excellent uranium tolerance and activity for bio-FeS-mediated uranium reduction. B

The biogeochemical activities of free-living and symbiotic fungi must be acknowledged in attempts to understand uranium cycling and dispersal in the environment. Although the near-surface geochemistry of uranium is very complex and a wide variety of mineral phases is known, uranium trioxide (UO3) and triuranium octaoxide (U(3)O(8)) can be used as well characterized models in the study of biotransformations. We have used a complex methodological approach involving advanced solid state speciation and scanning electron microscopy to study the ability of saprotrophic, ericoid and ectomycorrhizal f

The internal contamination of uranium poses severe health risks to both professionals and the public in case of nuclear accidents due to its chemo- and radiotoxicity. Although chelation therapy has been considered the only practical treatment in emergencies, current clinical chelators show only limited efficacy for uranium. Herein, a recently designed lacunary selenotungstate polyoxometalate (Se6W45) was demonstrated as an effective therapeutic agent. In this construct, the open site in Se6W45 provides a suitable uranium binding environment, resulting in the selective removal of uranium from k

Although the kidneys comprise a critical target of uranium exposure, the dynamics of renal uranium distribution have remained obscure. Uranium is considered to function physiologically in the form of uranyl ions that have high affinity for phosphate groups. The present study applied microbeam-based elemental analysis to precisely determine the distribution of phosphorus and uranium in the kidneys of male Wistar rats exposed to uranium. One day after a single subcutaneous injection of uranyl acetate (2 mg/kg), areas of concentrated phosphorus were scattered in the S3 segments of the proximal tu

The compound L-U-N [L = [N(CH2CH2NSiPr(i)3)3](3-), Pr(i) = CH(CH3)2] containing a terminal U-N triple bond has been synthesized and isolated successfully in experiments. To investigate the trend in the bonding nature of its pnictogen analogues, we have studied the L-U-E (E = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) complexes using the scalar relativistic density functional theory. The terminal U-E multiple bond length increases in the order of U-N ≪ U-P < U-As < U-Sb < U-Bi, which can be supported by the hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory. The U-E bond length, molecular orbital (MO), and natural bond or

Depleted uranium (DU) projectiles have been used in battle in Iraq and the Balkans and will continue to be a significant armor-penetrating munition for the US military. As demonstrated in the Persian Gulf War, battle injury from DU projectiles and shrapnel is a possibility, and removal of embedded DU fragments from the body is not always practical because of their location in the body or their small size. Previous studies in rodents have demonstrated that implanted DU mobilizes and translocates to the gonads, and natural uranium may be toxic to spermatazoa and the male reproductive tract. In t

Modern approaches for bioremediation of radionuclide contaminated environments are based on the ability of microorganisms to effectively catalyze changes in the oxidation states of metals that in turn influence their solubility. Although microbial metal reduction has been identified as an effective means for immobilizing highly-soluble uranium(VI) complexes in situ, the biomolecular mechanisms of U(VI) reduction are not well understood. Here, we show that c-type cytochromes of a dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, are essential for the reduction of U(VI) and for

This study exposes U(VI)-sorbed schwertmannite and jarosite to biotic reductive incubations under field-relevant conditions and examines the changes in aqueous and solid-phase speciation of U, Fe, and S as well as associated microbial communities over 180 days. The chemical, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and microscopic data demonstrated that the U(VI)-sorbed schwertmannite underwent a rapid reductive dissolution and solid-phase transformation to goethite, during which the surface-sorbed U(VI) was partly reduced and mostly repartitioned to monomeric U(VI)/U(IV) complexes by

The complexation equilibria of the hydrogen salicylate ion, HL(-), have been studied, at 25 degrees C, by potentiometric measurements with a glass electrode in 1 M NaClO4 for uranyl and Nd(III) ions and in 3 M NaClO4 for Pb(II) ion. The ligand concentration (CL) was varied between 10(-3) and 0.05 M. In the system with U(VI) the concentrations ranged between: 10(-3) < or = [U(VI)] < or = 0.01 M, 0.5 < or = CL /[U(VI)] < or = 10 and 10(-2) < or = [H+] < or = 10(-5) M; for neodymium system: 2 x 10(-3) < or = [Nd(III)] < or = 0.01, 1 < or = CL /[Nd(III)] < or = 10 and 10(-2) < or = [H+] < or = 10(

Leaching from alum shale waste rock, particularly acid rock drainage (ARD), poses a significant environmental risk due to oxidation of sulphide minerals, which generates acidic leachates enriched in heavy metals, sulphate, and uranium. Simultaneously, crushed concrete represents a large waste stream with strong alkaline properties and high potential for acid neutralisation. In this study, we quantify the effect of crushed concrete waste on leaching behaviour of alum shale using layered column experiments with crushed concrete and two types of alum shale waste rock, to which de-ionised water wa
