Partnering with Private Providers to Promote Long-Acting Contraceptives in Urban Bangladesh: A Mixed-Methods Feasibility Study.

CONTEXT: Bangladesh's pluralistic health system has diversified opportunities for clients to obtain family planning, but public-private partnerships could improve access to services, particularly in urban areas. METHOD: Sixteen providers, clients and program managers were interviewed to assess perspectives on a family planning orientation and demand-side financing referral program tested in Mirpur, Bangladesh. The 15-month program, conducted in 2015-2016, was designed to encourage private providers to identify non-family planning clients with unmet contraceptive needs, promote choice of a bro

Decomposing the gap in childhood undernutrition between poor and non-poor in urban India, 2005-06.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing evidence from other developing countries, intra-urban inequality in childhood undernutrition is poorly researched in India. Additionally, the factors contributing to the poor/non-poor gap in childhood undernutrition have not been explored. This study aims to quantify the contribution of factors that explain the poor/non-poor gap in underweight, stunting, and wasting among children aged less than five years in urban India. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the third round of the National Family Health Survey conducted during 2005-06. Descriptive statist

Differences in Family Planning Services by Rural-urban Geography: Survey of Title X-Supported Clinics In Great Plains and Midwestern States.

CONTEXT: Understanding the nature of rural-urban variation in U.S. family planning services would help address disparities in unmet contraceptive need. METHODS: In 2012, some 558 Title X-supported clinics in 16 Great Plains and Midwestern states were surveyed. Rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes were used to categorize clinic locations as urban, large rural city, small rural town or isolated small rural town. Bivariate analyses examined key domains of service provision by RUCA category and clinic type. RESULTS: The proportion of clinics offering walk-in appointments was lower in isolated

Assessment of Oral Health Disparities and Barriers to Care among Underserved Populations in Urban and Rural Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health disparities persist between urban and rural populations, particularly among underserved communities. Geographic isolation, financial constraints, and lack of access to dental services contribute significantly to these disparities. Rural populations often encounter greater barriers in accessing healthcare facilities, whereas urban underserved groups face challenges such as overburdened public health systems. This study aims to assess and compare the disparities in oral health outcomes and the barriers to care faced by underserved populations in both urban and rural set

Deployment-related sequelae and treatment utilization in rural and urban war veterans in Hawaii.

This study compared common deployment-related health issues and correlates of mental health service utilization among rural and urban veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND) living in Hawaii. Frequency of utilization of a broad range of mental health resources, including clergy/spiritual leaders, videoconference/online programs, and traditional/alternative healers, was also characterized. A random sample of 116 rural and 117 urban ethnoracially diverse veterans completed a mail survey. Rural veterans were more likely than urban

Why cultural ecosystem services matter most: Exploring the pathways linking greenspaces and mental health in a low-income country.

Exposure to urban greenspaces promotes a variety of mental health benefits. However, much of the evidence for these benefits is biased towards high-income countries. In contrast, urban areas in low-income settings that have the highest rates of urbanisation remain understudied. Given the increasing burden of mental ill-health associated with urbanisation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is a clear need to better understand the role urban greenspaces play in mitigating mental ill-health. Here we use a novel combination of research methods (participatory video, focus groups and

Limited Service Availability, Readiness, and Use of Facility-Based Delivery Care in Haiti: A Study Linking Health Facility Data and Population Data.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the barriers that women in Haiti face to giving birth at a health facility is important for improving coverage of facility delivery and reducing persistently high maternal mortality. We linked health facility survey data and population survey data to assess the role of the obstetric service environment in affecting women's use of facility delivery care. METHODS: Data came from the 2012 Haiti Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and the 2013 Haiti Service Provision Assessment (SPA) survey. DHS clusters and SPA facilities were linked with their geographic coordinate inf

Primary Psychiatric Diagnoses, Commercialized Tobacco Use, and Homelessness: Comparisons Between Urban American Indian/ Alaska Native and Non-American Indian/Alaska Native Adult Clinical Samples.

Although over 70% of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) reside in urban areas, our knowledge of urban AI/AN adults receiving mental health treatment is limited. This study compares primary psychiatric diagnoses, commercialized tobacco use, and homelessness between AI/AN and non-AI/AN adults receiving services in an urban public mental health agency serving primarily AI/AN people in southern California. Depressive disorders were the most common psychiatric diagnoses for both groups. However, AI/AN adult clients demonstrated significantly less anxiety disorders and significantly more h

Bridging urban-rural disparities in malaria care during pregnancy in Senegal: evidence from household and health facility surveys.

BACKGROUND: Despite the World Health Organization's recommendations, the uptake of Intermittent Preventive Treatment in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) in Senegal remains suboptimal, with disparities observed between urban and rural areas. More remains to be known about how malaria service readiness would affect the utilization of IPTp-SP. METHODS: Data were obtained from seven annual rounds of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Service Provision Assessments (SPA) in Senegal from 2012 to 2019. Using sample domain linkage to link the databases at the regional level. A

Exploring the roles of informal healthcare providers in urban settings to improve access and quality of care for the urban poor: experience from Bangladesh, Ghana, Nepal, and Nigeria.

Though informal healthcare providers (IHPs), often defined as unregistered and not formally trained, are heavily utilized by low-income urban residents and present an opportunity to address the urban primary care gap, these providers are rarely prioritized or integrated into health systems. This paper explores IHPs' role in urban settings across four rapidly urbanizing low- and middle-income countries: Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, and Ghana, to enhance understanding of their potential within health systems and promote their integration to improve access and quality of care for the urban poor. Improving urban health through primary health care in south Asia.

South Asia is rapidly urbanising. The strains of rapid urbanisation have profound implications for the health and equity of urban populations. This Series paper examines primary health care (PHC) in south Asian cities. Health and its social determinants vary considerably across south Asian cities and substantial socioeconomic inequities are present. Although cities offer easy geographical access to PHC services, financial hardship associated with health care use and low quality of care are a concern, particularly for low-income residents. Providing better PHC in south Asia requires a multi-sec

Urban health inequities and healthy longevity: traditional and emerging risk factors across the cities and policy implications.

Urbanization is reshaping global health, with over 55% of the world's population residing in urban areas, a figure projected to reach 68% by 2050. This demographic shift presents significant challenges and opportunities for public health, as urban environments exacerbate health disparities rooted in social determinants of health, such as economic stability, education, neighborhood conditions, and access to healthcare. Rapid urban growth, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, has led to the emergence of inequitable living conditions, environmental hazards, and limited access to esse

Urban Indigenous Communities Transforming Health Care: "Where We Feel Safe and Where Our People Are Working".

Indigenous knowledge and traditional wellness approaches combined with western health services are increasingly being identified as critical for Indigenous Peoples' overall health and wellness in Canada. In this article, we share how an Urban Indigenous Collective Governance Circle led to transformational actions responding to community-voiced priorities, and co-development, delivery, evaluation, and sustainability of urban holistic traditional and western Indigenous diabetes and healthy weight programs. This resulted in increased access to, and ownership and leadership of, strengths-based, eq

The effect of basic public health service equalization on settlement intention of migrant workers in China: the mediating effect model based on subjective feelings.

BACKGROUND: During the 14th Five-Year Plan, China aims to transform rural migrants into urban citizens and ensure equal access to public services to enhance new urbanization. Understanding migrant workers' settlement intentions is crucial for their citizenship development. Based on the fundamental role of the right to life and health, equalization of basic public health services is essential. Therefore, understanding the potential impact of public health services equalization on the settlement intention of migrant workers is crucial in China's new urbanization. METHOD: In this study, we utili

Nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare in primary-care settings in Kenya.

Kenya maintains an extraordinary treatment gap for mental health services because the need for and availability of mental health services are extraordinarily misaligned. One way to narrow the treatment gap is task-sharing, where specialists rationally distribute tasks across the health system, with many responsibilities falling upon frontline health workers, including nurses. Yet, little is known about how nurses perceive task-sharing mental health services. This article investigates nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare delivery within primary-care settings in Kenya. We conducted a cross-s

Assessing the effects of local economic activities on stream ecosystem services across cities with contrasting urban development histories.

This study compared urban streams in two cities in central Portugal that have contrasting urban development histories to investigate how ecosystem services are associated with the local economic activities. For this purpose, we identified the predominant local economic activities in two cities in central Portugal, Aveiro and Coimbra, and selected thirty urban streams for assessment. The streams were evaluated based on the degree of urbanization, measured through impervious surface coverage (IMD), and several indicators of provisioning, regulating, and cultural services, using the Urban Stream

Family planning for urban slums in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review of interventions/service delivery models and their impact.

BACKGROUND: Although evidence suggest that many slum dwellers in low- and middle-income countries have the most difficulty accessing family planning (FP) services, there are limited workable interventions/models for reaching slum communities with FP services. This review aimed to identify existing interventions and service delivery models for providing FP services in slums, and as well examine potential impact of such interventions and service delivery models in low- and middle-income settings. METHODS: We searched and retrieved relevant published studies on the topic from 2000 to 2020 from e
