Urban residential fire and flame injuries: a population based study.

BACKGROUND: Fires are a leading cause of death, but non-fatal injuries from residential fires have not been well characterised. METHODS: To identify residential fire injuries that resulted in an emergency department visit, hospitalisation, or death, computerised databases from emergency departments, hospitals, ambulance and helicopter services, the fire department, and the health department, and paper records from the local coroner and fire stations were screened in a deprived urban area between June 1996 and May 1997. RESULT: There were 131 fire related injuries, primarily smoke inhalation

Seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the urban population of Qatar: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological data on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infections remain limited in the Middle East and North Africa. This study estimated HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalence in the urban population of Qatar and examined associations with demographic characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using archived serum specimens from a representative SARS-CoV-2 serosurvey undertaken in 2020 with a probability-based stratified sampling design. HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG antibodies were measured using Mindray CL-900i chemilum

[The habitat and environment-induced imbalance of trace elements in the populations in the population of urban and rural areas].

A comprehensive hygienic assessment was made of natural and anthropogenic risk factors and conditions for trace element deficiencies in the populations of urban and rural areas. All chemicals identified were evaluated in the environmental objects. The mean daily absorption dose for the population was estimated. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, Mn, Ni, Cr, Co, Cd, Sr in the biological media (hair, blood, bone tissue, placenta) in the populations of an industrial town and rural areas and their levels in some abnormalities and also compares the sp

Allergy test results of a rural and small-city population compared with those of an urban population.

The frequency of sensitization to environmental antigens changes in different regions. As such, the pattern of sensitivity to common allergens was studied at multiple sites across central Pennsylvania, an area composed of small cities and rural communities, to determine uniqueness of allergies in populations from this area in contrast to allergies as determined by skin testing in large urban centers. The study reported was undertaken to determine allergen variation from an urban population compared with a rural population of a Northeastern state so that environmental avoidance and immunotherap

Facilitators to cervical cancer screening in a minority, urban, underserved population.

OBJECTIVES: Cervical cancer has markedly declined due to widespread use of screening, but Hispanic women continue to bear a disproportionate amount of the cervical cancer burden due to under-screening. Previous studies have explored barriers to screening but have failed to identify targetable facilitators in this group. We aimed to assess facilitators to cervical cancer screening among a predominantly urban, Hispanic population who presented to a no-cost, community-based clinic. METHODS: Patients completed demographic and health information, a validated social determinants of health (SDOH) sc

Characterization of Chronic Sinonasal Disease Symptoms in an Urban Homeless Population.

BACKGROUND: The urban homeless population has increased exposure to risk factors associated with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, a gap in knowledge of the prevalence of sinonasal symptoms in these demographic limits complete understanding of CRS epidemiology. There is a need to elucidate sinonasal disease burden in this vulnerable patient population to bring awareness to any existing disparities. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence, severity, and associated factors of CRS clinical symptoms and health-care barriers in an urban homeless population. METHODS: Homeless adults completed a s

Risk Factors for Postpartum Emergency Department Visits in an Urban Population.

Objectives To identify risk factors associated with urban postpartum emergency department utilization. Methods This case-control study included 100 matched pairs of postpartum women who had delivered at a large, integrated urban medical system in Bronx, New York, in 2012-2013, with the cases having had an emergency department visit within 42 days of delivery. The cases, identified utilizing administrative and billing data, were matched 1:1 with controls by labor unit, delivery mode and date, excluding nonviable pregnancies. The controls did not have a known postpartum emergency department visi

EQ-5D-5L norms for the urban Chinese population in China.

BACKGROUND: To generate Chinese population norms for the EQ-5D-5L dimensions, EQ-VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) scores and EQ-5D-5L index scores, stratified by gender and age. The EQ-5D is a widely used generic health-related quality of life instrument to describe population health and health outcomes in clinical trials and health economic evaluations. Currently, there are no EQ-5D-5L population norms for China. METHODS: This norm study utilized the data collected in an EQ-5D-5L valuation study in China between December 2012 and January 2013. In the valuation study, respondents were asked to rep

Predictors of optional immunization uptake in an urban south Indian population.

BACKGROUND: In Tamil Nadu, India, bacille Calmette-Guérin, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, oral poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, and measles vaccines are part of the routine immunization schedule and are available free from government health centers. All other vaccines are optional and available in the private sector at a cost to families. This study assesses immunization rates of routine and optional vaccines and examines parental attitudes toward vaccines in Pallavapuram, Tamil Nadu. METHODS: The cluster sampling method was used to estimate immunization coverage. Seven children 18 to 36 months old

Copper concentration in a healthy urban adult population of southern Iran.

Nutritional deficiencies are important and widespread problems in most developing countries. Preventing and correcting micronutrient deficiencies are important because of the multiple negative consequences of these deficiencies. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of copper deficiency in an adult population in Shiraz, southern Iran. We also determined the association between copper status and other factors such as age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). In this cross-sectional study, 416 adults residing in Shiraz were selected by two-stage sampling. Serum copper was measured by fl

Genetic biomonitoring of an urban population exposed to mutagenic airborne pollutants.

Biomonitoring studies have increased as a consequence of risks and effects to human health on exposure to environmental contaminants, mainly air pollutants. Genetic biomarkers are useful tools for the early assessment of exposure to occupational and environmental pollution. The objective of the present study was to investigate genotoxic effects on people residing and/or working downwind from an oil refinery in southern Brazil and the mutagenic activity of airborne particulate matter (PM10). Samples of peripheral blood and buccal mucosa cells were evaluated using the single-cell gel electrophor

Cardiovascular risk factors in the urban Mexican population: the FRIMEX study.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerotic ischaemic heart disease is the second leading cause of general mortality in Mexico due to the growing prevalence of atherosclerotic risk factors in our society. The data of the FRIMEX study (Factores de Riesgo en México, Risk Factors in Mexico), considered together with those of other contemporary epidemiological surveys, will aid in our comprehension of the current state of cardiovascular epidemics in Mexico. METHODS: Frequencies of obesity, hypertension and smoking, and total cholesterol and glucose in capillary blood were estimated in a non-probabilistic sample

Growth of exclusively breast-fed infants from a poor urban population.

The growth of two groups of infants were evaluated, one of them exclusively breast-fed (105 infants) and the other exclusively bottle-fed (61 infants), and compared with one another and with international standards (NCHS). All infants were evaluated by anthropometry at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months of age. A fourth order polynomial was adopted for each infant and for each anthropometric measurement in order to estimate individual growth, and the 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles for weight and length were obtained. For the age of 6 months, the weights of breast-fed boys and girls were always statist
