Urbanization shapes gut bacterial communities and metabolic functions in migratory wild birds across Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the association between birds, zoonotic infections, and urban environments is increasingly important due to industrialization and emerging zoonoses. Investigating the diversity, structure, and metabolic potential of the gut bacteriome of migratory wild birds can uncover recurring biological patterns across species, particularly in those that serve as reservoirs of zoonotic microorganisms. METHODS: This study investigated the fecal bacteriomes of migratory wild birds across three locations in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Wi-Fi–enabled miniature digital cameras were deployed

Urbanization and land use regulate soil vulnerability to antibiotic contamination in urban green spaces.

The presence of antibiotics in environment is an emerging concern because of their ubiquitous occurrence, adverse eco-toxicological effects, and promotion of widespread antibiotic resistance. Urban soil, which plays a noticeable role in human health, may be a reservoir of antibiotics because of intensive human disturbance. However, little is understood about the vulnerability of soil to antibiotic contamination in urban areas and the spatial-temporal characteristics of anthropogenic and environmental pressures. In this study, we developed a framework for the dynamic assessment of soil vulnerab

First detection of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis in Côte d'Ivoire: urbanization in question.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have revealed high malaria transmission in Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire. The sociopolitical crisis in the country and the resulting environmental changes have raised the need to update existing knowledge on mosquito vector species and malaria transmission. METHODS: Adult mosquitoes were caught using the human landing catch (HLC) sampling method in Bouaké. They were collected in six districts representative of the diversity in urban landscapes. Sampling points were selected along the water network crossing the city and monitored from 2020 to 2021 to detect the presence of

A Spatial Panel Data Analysis of Economic Growth, Urbanization, and NOx Emissions in China.

Abstract: Is nitrogen oxides emissions spatially correlated in a Chinese context? What is the relationship between nitrogen oxides emission levels and fast-growing economy/urbanization? More importantly, what environmental preservation and economic developing policies should China's central and local governments take to mitigate the overall nitrogen oxides emissions and prevent severe air pollution at the provincial level in specific locations and their neighboring areas? The present study aims to tackle these issues. This is the first research that simultaneously studies the nexus between nit

Urbanization and geographic expansion of zoonotic arboviral diseases: mechanisms and potential strategies for prevention.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) mainly infect people via direct spillover from enzootic cycles. However, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses have repeatedly initiated urban transmission cycles involving human amplification and peridomestic mosquito vectors to cause major epidemics. Here, I review these urban emergences and potential strategies for their prevention and control.

[Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and urbanization. Examples of urban vectors of dengue and filariasis].

Once located in time and place the beginning of urbanization process, the mechanisms of adaptation to urban ecosystem and of dissemination by human conveyances are studied for two domestic mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens fatigans (= quinque-fasciatus). Then epidemiological consequences are discussed. Ae. aegypti pullulation constitutes a potential risk of urban yellow fever outbreak and the main factor of dengue haemorrhagic fever appearance; the increase of C. p. fatigans populations involves a slow rise of bancroftian filariasis. Future prospects for these diseases are discussed

Urbanization influences hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome transmission: 34-year evidence from China's national surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Mainland China accounts for over 90 % of the global hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) cases, yet quantitative relationships between climate, urbanization and transmission dynamics remain poorly understood across national scales. METHODS: We analyzed 34 years of HFRS surveillance data (1985-2018) from 31 provincial-level administrative divisions in China to examine the associations with climatic variables, socioeconomic indicators, and land use types using Bayesian nonlinear mixed-effects models. Dominance analysis was conducted to quantify the relative importance of eac

The spatial impact of population semi-urbanization on sulfur dioxide emissions: Empirical evidence from China.

Population semi-urbanization has become a significant feature in the process of urbanization in some countries, especially China. Although the impact of population and urbanization on the ecological environment was thoroughly studied, the role of the semi-urbanized population needs further discussion. This research studies the spatial effect of population semi-urbanization on sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions through provincial data from China. Multiple spatial weights are used to test the result robustness. Terrain flatness is applied as an instrumental variable to address the endogeneity issue.

Mercury Exposure Is Associated with Urbanization but not Salmonella Status in White Ibis (Eudocimus albus).

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous contaminant in wetlands that can cause immunosuppression in birds, which may increase susceptibility to colonization with Salmonella spp. Previously, we found that White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), a recently urbanized wading bird, shed Salmonella spp. at a higher prevalence when captured at urban sites, compared with natural sites. In this study, we sought to determine if Hg burdens in ibis are related to Salmonella status or degree of urbanization or both. We analyzed feathers from 94 ibis in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA, along an urbanization gradient (0-68% urba

Dietary niche breadth influences the effects of urbanization on the gut microbiota of sympatric rodents.

Cities are among the most extreme forms of anthropogenic ecosystem modification, and urbanization processes exert profound effects on animal populations through multiple ecological pathways. Increased access to human-associated food items may alter species' foraging behavior and diet, in turn modifying the normal microbial community of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), ultimately impacting their health. It is crucial we understand the role of dietary niche breadth and the resulting shift in the gut microbiota as urban animals navigate novel dietary resources. We combined stable isotope analysi

Urbanization impact on mosquito community and the transmission potential of filarial infection in central Europe.

BACKGROUND: Despite long-term research on dirofilariosis in Slovakia, little attention has thus far been paid to Dirofilaria vectors. The particular aim of the present study was molecular screening for filarioid parasites in two different habitats of Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. In addition, the effect of urbanisation on mosquito species abundance and composition, associated with the risk of mosquito-borne infections, was studied and discussed. METHODS: Mosquitoes were identified by morphological features, and molecular methods were also used for determination of selected individ

Traffic-related air pollution and allergic disease: an update in the context of global urbanization.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review aims to give an update on the literature around traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and allergic disease in the context of global urbanization, as the most populous countries in the world face severe TRAP exposure challenges. RECENT FINDINGS: As research continues to show that gene-environment interactions and epigenetics contribute to the TRAP-allergy link, evidence around the links to climate change grows. Greenspace may provide a buffer to adverse effects of traffic on health, overall, but pose risks in terms of allergic disease. SUMMARY: The link between tr

The Influence of Urbanization Modes on the Spatial Circulation of Flaviviruses within Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

Dengue is an emerging infectious disease of global significance. Although this virus has been reported for a long time, its significance within the burden of diseases in West Africa is not obvious, especially in Burkina Faso. Our objective was to evaluate flavivirus presence in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) and the link between anti-flavivirus antibody seroprevalence and urbanization modes. A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted and 3015 children were enrolled from Ouagadougou districts with different types and degrees of urbanization (with/without equipment and high/low building

Contrasting Responses of Rodents With Different Habitat Associations to Rapid Urbanization in a Chinese Megacity.

Urbanization is critical in reshaping wildlife, yet multi-level responses of animals remain poorly understood. Here, to test whether rodents with different habitat associations exhibit divergent responses to rapid urbanization, we selected three representative species: the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), a synanthropic species; the striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius), a farmland-associated species; and the Chinese white-bellied rat (Niviventer confucianus), a woodland-associated species. We investigated their population size, morphological traits, and gut microbiota along the urban-rural gr
