INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate factors predictive of negative ureteroscopy (URS) in ureteral stones.
METHODS: Patients who underwent URS between January 2007 and June 2018 were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1- positive URS (841 patients); and group 2 -negative URS (75 patients). These two groups were compared in terms of demographic data, stone characteristics, and postoperative outcomes.
RESULTS: The mean age of the study patients was 44.5±15.1 years. The absence of collecting system dilatation due to the present stone was found to be a significant

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Routine imaging following ureteroscopy for treatment of renal/ureteral calculi continues to be a topic of debate. However, with the increasing focus on healthcare costs and quality, judicious use of diagnostic imaging to optimize outcomes while minimizing resource utilization is a priority. We sought to identify post-ureteroscopy imaging practices among experienced urologists.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A REDcap questionnaire was sent to urologists in North America. The questionnaire surveyed demographic data, clinical volume, and imaging preferences post-ureteroscopy. Add

OBJECTIVES: An obstructed, infected kidney combined with ureteral stones can be lethal, and requires urgent drainage and complete stone removal. However, the optimal method of stone removal, and its safety and efficacy have yet to be conclusively established. The aim of this study was to determine the safety and efficacy of carrying out ureteroscopy after kidney drainage for septic patients with obstructing stones.
METHODS: From January 2004 to September 2011, 88 patients underwent stone removal by either ureteroscopy (n = 48) or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (n = 40) after drainage o

PURPOSE: Recent studies have demonstrated deleterious effects of ionizing radiation from diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures. One of the barriers to minimizing patient exposure is physician awareness. We prospectively studied whether providing surgeons with feedback on their fluoroscopy utilization would affect intraoperative fluoroscopy times.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2007, we prospectively began to track fluoroscopy usage for all urology cases. Nine months later, surgeons started to receive periodic reports with their mean fluoroscopy time compared with their peers. We reviewed a

We report a 28-year-old man who presented with hematuria and intermittent flank pain. Conventional CT urography showed mild left hydronephrosis and an undetermined lesion in the left ureter. By virtual CT ureteroscopy, a fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) was preoperatively diagnosed. The patient had segmental resection of the ureter and pathological proof of FEP was obtained.

We report our experience on performing ureteroscopic procedures using local anaesthesia with or without intravenous analgesia. During a two year period 334 ureteroscopic procedures were performed in our hospital. 159 of them were begun but only 138 completed without the use of general or regional anaesthesia. In 9 patients ureteroscopy was performed with lindocaine jelly in the urethra only, and in 129 with additional intravenous analgesia Fentanyl, a synthetic morphine derivative, was used for intravenous analgesia. Ureteroscopy was performed for stone fragmentation or extraction in 119 patie

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stones (renal calculi) are a prevalent medical condition, causing significant pain and discomfort to patients. The existing treatment options for kidney stones include extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and flexible ureteroscopy. It is crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment modalities, including flexible ureteroscopy, to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of flexible ureteroscopy in treating renal calculi and determine its value in managing this condition.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of emergency ureteroscopy (URS) compared with elective URS.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent URS for isolated ureteral stones in a single center from October 2001 to February 2014. Our patient cohort was divided into two groups: an emergency URS group (Group A), which consisted of patients who underwent URS within the first 24 h of admission, and an elective or planned URS group (Group B). The URS success rate was defined as being the incidence of successful stone fragmentation and whether there was resolutio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is uncommon accounting for less than 10% of all urothelial tumours. Ureteroscopic management (URS) is the first line treatment for low-risk disease and has been increasingly utilised due to technological advances and increasing surgical experience. This review looks at patient outcomes relating to URS, emerging technologies and the role of adjuvant intracavitary therapy in the management of UTUC.
RECENT FINDINGS: URS has firmly established itself in the management algorithm for UTUC, and a good body of evidence supports its use for lo

We present a case of a 45-year-old female who experienced rupture of a right calyceal diverticulum caused by ureteroscopy. Fifteen hours after the operation, she had severe right flank pain and a high fever (38.9°C). Computed tomography revealed perinephric extravasation of urine and bleeding inside the diverticulum. We diagnosed rupture of a calyceal diverticulum; therefore, we continued antibiotic administration and pain relief medication. She became afebrile on postoperative day 4 and was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 7. Owing to renal cortex thinning in the diverticula,

Transurethral lithotripsy (TUL) is a common procedure in urology. However, controversy persists about how to deal with stones pushed up into kidney from the ureter during the procedure of TUL. This study investigated the efficacy of combining flexible ureteroscopy and rigid ureteroscopy for pushed-up stones into kidney during TUL. Fotry-one patients underwent TUL by a single surgeon from July 2007 to May 2009. Eight cases resulted in pushed-up stones during operation or involved existing kidney stones. We used a Zero-tip or Litho Catch Basket catheter and a flexible ureteroscope to carry these

INTRODUCTION: Ureteroscopic stone manipulation and extraction is the standard of care for distal stone disease in the adult population. Recently, with refinements in instrumentation, these standards have been applied in pediatrics. Here, we investigate the role of ureteral dilation and the need for postoperative stenting after ureteroscopy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine children (21 male, eight female) with a mean age of 11.0 (2.5-17.5) years underwent 34 ureterscopic procedures (21 right, 13 left) to address ureteral stones in 27 (23 distal, 3 mid and 1 proximal), surveillance of the up

Two therapies, ureterolithotripsy (URL) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) can be used in the treatment of lower ureteral calculi. In a retrospective analysis ureterolithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for lower ureteral calculi were compared to evaluate morbidity. During a 3 year period 161 patients treated with ureterolithotripsy and 71 who underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (Siemens Lithostar) were analysed as to the success rate, effectiveness quotient, complication rate and length of hospitalization. Followup consisted of ultrasound and a plain
