Exploring the DNA Methylation Profile of Genes Associated with Bladder Cancer in Bladder Tissue of Patients with Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction.

DNA methylation is an epigenetic process that commonly occurs in genes' promoters and results in the transcriptional silencing of genes. DNA methylation is a frequent event in bladder cancer, participating in tumor initiation and progression. Bladder cancer is a major health issue in patients suffering from neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), although the pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease remain unclear. In this population, bladder cancer is characterized by aggressive histopathology, advanced stage during diagnosis, and high mortality rates. To assess the DNA methylation

Weekly Sequential Antibioprophylaxis for Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections Among Patients With Neurogenic Bladder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent urinary tract infections (R-UTIs) are the main cause of morbidity and hospitalizations in subjects with neurogenic bladder (NB) due to spinal cord injury (SCI). We evaluated the efficacy of weekly oral cyclic antibiotic (WOCA) prophylaxis (ie, the alternate weekly administration of 2 antibiotics) in preventing R-UTIs. METHODS: Randomized (1:1), open-label, superiority-controlled trial compared WOCA prophylaxis to no prophylaxis (control) for 6 months in patients with NB due to SCI, using clean intermittent self-catheterization, and suffering from R-UTIs. Primary outcome

Intravesical hyaluronic acid treatment in recurrent urinary tract infections in children with spina bifida and neurogenic bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Damage to the glycosaminoglycan layer of the urothelium, which is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), may increase the possibility of bacterial adherence and infections. Patients with neurogenic bladder (NB) who perform clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) 4-6 times a day are also under great risk for recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of intravesical HA in reducing the frequency of RUTIs in patients with spina bifida (SB) and NB, who perform CIC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients (nine girls, o

Application of data mining techniques to explore predictors of upper urinary tract damage in patients with neurogenic bladder.

This study proposed a decision tree model to screen upper urinary tract damage (UUTD) for patients with neurogenic bladder (NGB). Thirty-four NGB patients with UUTD were recruited in the case group, while 78 without UUTD were included in the control group. A decision tree method, classification and regression tree (CART), was then applied to develop the model in which UUTD was used as a dependent variable and history of urinary tract infections, bladder management, conservative treatment, and urodynamic findings were used as independent variables. The urethra function factor was found to be th

Urinary manometry in patients with spinal cord injury: neurourological considerations in the rehabilitation of acute and chronic neurogenic bladder.

Recordings of pressure within the bladder, urethra, rectum, and external anal sphincter with image intensification and videotaping were carried out in spinal cord injury patients with complete and incomplete lesions, during spinal shock and in the chronic stage. The behavior of the external urethral sphincter and the somatic and visceral motor reflexes of the sacral segments were studied, during and after spinal shock. During spinal shock the majority of patients retained sacral somatomotor activity, in the absence of visceromotor activity, and resistance values at the external urethral sphinc

Role of Free-Flow Uroflowmetry as an Adjunct in Management of Urinary Tract Dysfunction for Children "At-Risk" for Neurogenic Bladder.

OBJECTIVE: Invasive urodynamic study(UDS) remains the gold-standard test for diagnosing and characterizing the neurogenic bladder. UDS being an invasive test is difficult to implement as a screening test for children who are predisposed for neurogenic bladder. An observational study was conducted to evaluate the urodynamic features of lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) in follow-up pediatric surgical (nonurological primary etiology) cases "at-risk" for neurogenic bladder and the efficacy of noninvasive uroflowmetry was assessed. METHODS: A prospective study was done from November 2019 to
