Urolithiasis in an African population.

Eighty-one cases of urinary tract calculi in Nigerians seen at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria, over a period of five years are reviewed. A relative incidence of 13 per 100,000 was established. At the time of presentation, 36 stones were found in the bladder, 21 in the kidneys, 20 in the ureters, one in the prostate and 3 in the urethra. Five patients had calculi at multiple sites. There was a male to female ratio of 5 : 1. Forty-one per cent of the calculi occurred in the 31-40 year age group, and 14.8% of cases were found in children. Over 80% of the calculi were

Giant vesicle calculi leading to spontaneous bladder rupture and acute renal failure: an unusual presentation.

Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder is extremely rare. We report a case of a 70-year-old man with spontaneous bladder rupture secondary to neglected giant vesicle calculi who presented as acute renal failure. The patient was stabilised with per-urethral catheterisation and extravesical drain placement. About 700 mL pus mixed with urine was drained through the per-urethral catheter and approximately 2000 mL of pus was drained through the extravesical drain. Cystolithotomy showed two large calculi which were removed.

Intracorporeal lithotripsy with the Swiss Lithoclast.

BACKGROUND: In addition to currently available modalities of intracorporeal lithotripsy (ultrasonic, electrohydraulic, and laser), a new ballistic lithotriptor known as the Swiss Lithoclast has recently gained attention. This study reports our experience with the Swiss Lithoclast in the endoscopic management of urinary calculi. METHODS: A total of 51 patients with urinary calculi were treated with the Swiss Lithoclast; one patient with a renal calculus, 28 with ureteral calculi, and 22 with lower urinary tract (bladder, urethra and Kock pouch) calculi. RESULTS: The Lithoclast successfully fr

Patient with inguinal hernia containing the urinary bladder complicated by bladder stones.

INTRODUCTION: We encountered a patient in whom bladder inguinal hernia complicated by bladder stones was incidentally diagnosed. Bladder inguinal hernia containing stones in the prolapsed bladder is rare and only two cases have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was an 82-year-old male in whom ascending colon cancer and inguinal hernia containing the urinary bladder were diagnosed based on abdominal computed tomography performed to examine anemia. The urinary bladder contained several small stones. Radical surgery for the hernia and lithotripsy of the urinary bladder were concomita

Struvite urolithiasis in a litter of miniature Schnauzer dogs.

Magnesium ammonium phosphate calculi developed in the urinary bladders and urethras of four of five offspring of Miniature Schnauzer parents with recurrent struvite urolithiasis. Calculi were detected by radiograhy when the dogs were 12 to 15 months old. Males and females were affected. A significant number of urease-producing staphylococci were identified in the urine of three of four dogs before urolith formation, and in one dog after urolith formation. The dogs were evaluated until they were 26 months old. Serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium were inside usual limits t

A Rare Case of a Giant Bladder Stone Associated With Post-obstructive Renal Failure Managed by Open Cystolithotomy.

Urinary tract stones are found in many locations, such as in the kidney or ureter, and, less commonly, in the bladder. Bladder stones are solid calculi that are usually composed of calcified material, most commonly uric acid, and typically weigh less than 100 g. There is a higher prevalence of bladder stones in males than in females, which can be explained by the pathophysiology of how these stones are formed. Namely, bladder stones tend to form secondary to urinary stasis, such as in the setting of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, bladder stones can form in otherwise healthy indiv

Medical management of urinary calculi in a stallion with breeding dysfunction.

A 9-year-old Thoroughbred stallion was examined because of breeding dysfunction and possible urethritis. The stallion had good libido and readily obtained an erection, mounted, and intromitted but did not thrust and ejaculate. After mounting the mare, the stallion would squeal and dismount. Endoscopic examination of the urethra and bladder revealed irregular, spiculate yellow crystals (< 1 cm in size) and sabulous deposits; numerous calculi were embedded in the mucosa of the bladder. Because the horse was at the start of a breeding season, the owner would not give permission for general anesth

Risk assessment and prevention of urolithiasis in urban areas of Baoding, China.

Urolithiasis, or the formation of calculi in the urinary system, represents a prevalent urological condition frequently encountered among individuals aged 30 to 55 years. An in-depth analysis of the composition of these calculi holds significant promise in shedding light on the underlying etiological and pathogenic factors contributing to this ailment. The primary objective of this study was to delineate the principal components comprising urinary system calculi within a cohort of patients who sought medical intervention at a tertiary grade A hospital located in Baoding City. Furthermore, our

A case of transvaginal lithotripsy for a giant vaginal calculus.

INTRODUCTION: Primary vaginal calculi are relatively rare, compared with secondary calculi. Primary calculi are often a result of urogenital sinus abnormalities, neurogenic bladder, or chronic incontinence. CASE PRESENTATION: Forty-seven years old female with cerebral palsy since infancy had longstanding urinary incontinence. She visited her doctor for a fever and was referred to us with a urinary tract infection. Imaging revealed a large vaginal calculus. It was not possible to remove the calculus vaginally without crushing it, so we performed rigid cystoscopy with lithotripsy, using a pneum

Giant prostatic and bladder calculi: Endoscopic management and review of the literature.

Giant prostatic and bladder calculi is extremely rare entity with incidence increasing with age. These large stones can be concurrently managed via transurethrally, open retro-pubic surgery, radical prostatectomy and endoscopically depending on site and size. A 55-male presented with severe lower urinary tract symptoms mainly incontinence of urine for 8-10 years. On workup, he was diagnosed to have giant prostatic and bladder calculi. We report this rare case as such giant stones are managed with open surgery but we succeeded in removing them endoscopically with favorable outcome.

Female urethral diverticulum containing a calculus: a case report.

Urethral diverticula with calculi have a low incidence as reported in the literature. This elderly female patient was first seen with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), dysuria, and hematuria. She had two large stones, one in the bladder and one in a urethral diverticulum. Litholapaxy with a laser was effective in resolving both calculi. Subsequent urethral diverticulectomy was effective in removal of the urethral diverticulum.

Urolithiasis in childhood: current management.

During the past 12 years, 62 children with urinary stones have been treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The most common presenting symptoms were abdominal or flank pain (45%), recurrent or persistent pyuria (35%), and gross hematuria (21%). Twenty-two patients had associated congenital urologic anomalies. Infection-related struvite stones were most common and were found in 18 children, of whom 15 were found to have anatomic abnormalities. Eighteen of 28 children evaluated for a metabolic cause were found to have an abnormality, most frequently hypercalciuria. No predisposing fa

Retrograde ejaculation associated spontaneous sperm cystolithiasis in four rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Retrograde ejaculation (RE) has been reported in humans and animals but RE with subsequent sperm calculi has rarely been reported. This report documents clinical and pathological findings of spontaneous sperm cystolithiasis in four rhesus macaques. While this condition has been associated with repeated electroejaculation, spontaneous sperm cystolithiasis is highly unusual. The animals presented with either stranguria, dysuria, hematuria, distended abdomen or lethargy. Ultrasound examination revealed several hyperechoic masses within the lumen of the urinary bladder. The animals were euthanized

[Clinical and radiologic diagnosis of etiology of macrohematuria from urinary tract].

Clinical, laboratory, ultrasonic, X-ray, and endoscopic methods were used to specify the cause of macrohematuria from the urinary tract at all levels. Seventy-two patients with macrohematuria were examined; in 37 the process was localizes in the urinary tract (pelvic tumors in 2, calculi in 14, bladder tumors in 9, hemorrhagic cystitis in 2, cystic diverticuli in 3, tuberculosis in 1, prostatic adenoma in 2, prostatic cancer in 4, cases). An ultrasonic examination, though a valuable method, failed to detect papillary tumors of the pelvis when used alone. Transabdominal and transrectal ultrason
