The tibial nerve is an established target for neuromodulation in the management of overactive bladder (OAB) and its associated symptoms, including urge urinary incontinence (UUI). Technologies are currently available to deliver tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) through percutaneous devices or through implantable devices. The benefits and safety of percutaneous TNS have led to it as a guideline-recommended therapy. However, patient compliance is limited by the burden of weekly office visits and the need for maintenance treatments. Further, insurance often only covers a limited number of lifetime v

PURPOSE: We report the results of the first 2 large randomized controlled trials designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tolterodine extended release in children 5 to 10 years old with symptoms of urinary urge incontinence suggestive of detrusor overactivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two double-blind, placebo controlled trials were conducted sequentially. Children 5 to 10 years old with incontinence suggestive of detrusor overactivity (1 or more diurnal incontinence episodes per 24 hours) were randomized to tolterodine (2 mg daily) or placebo for 12 weeks. The primary end point was the

Urinary incontinence remains a pressing problem, particularly for women. So this study was conducted to assess risk factors for stress, urge, mixed urinary incontinence and overactive bladder (OVB). Three hundred and thirty women aged 15-49, non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding who were referred to gynecologic clinics were surveyed. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Women with no symptoms related to urinary incontinence (UI) and OVB served as the reference group. The risk of all types of UI and OVB increased with constipation. Posterior pelvic organ prolapse was associated with stress and u

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and safety of an oxybutynin transdermal delivery system (OXY-TDS) and oral, long-acting tolterodine (TOL-LA) with placebo in previously treated patients with urge or mixed urinary incontinence.
METHODS: After withdrawal of their current antimuscarinic therapy, 361 adult patients were randomized to 12 weeks of double-blind, double-dummy treatment with twice weekly OXY-TDS 3.9 mg/day, daily TOL-LA 4 mg, or placebo. Evaluations included change from baseline in patient urinary diary symptoms, incontinence-specific quality of life, and safety.
RESULTS: OXY-TDS

This randomized clinical trial evaluates the success rate of neuro-adaptive therapy (NAT), applied with a specific neuro-adaptive regulator device, the Self-Controlled Electro Neuro-Adaptive Regulation (SCENAR), versus a sham for urge incontinence due to an overactive bladder (OAB). From February 2019 to May 2021, 66 patients were recruited. All subjects were randomized 1:1 at the first intervention visit to the NAT or sham procedure. Inclusion criteria were females between 18 and 80 years old with leakages due to an overactive bladder with unresponsiveness to medical therapy. Subjects were sc

Purpose: After the age of 65, urinary incontinence (UI) occurs in one of every two women. A positive correlation between falls and urgency UI (UUI) or mixed UI (MUI) has also been identified. However, lower extremity impairments in older women with UUI or MUI have not been thoroughly investigated. The primary goal of this study was to compare lower limb strength, balance, mobility, and function in older women with and without UUI or MUI. The secondary goal was to evaluate the association between these measurements and UI severity. Method: A total of 40 older women with and without UUI or MUI c

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of urgency urinary incontinence is a matter of debate. Current treatment options are based on the hypothesis of a neurological disorder of bladder innervation. However, it has also been hypothesised that one main cause is the reduced function of the bladder-holding apparatus, that is, insufficient suspension of the vesico-urethral junction. This study compared the effects of surgical apical vaginal elevation with those of solifenacin on urgency urinary incontinence in women.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Women with mixed and urgency urinary incontinence were randomised to ei

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) and Urge urinary incontinence (UUI) in a large cohort of adult women.
METHODS: This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey during the periods of 2001-2006 and 2011-2018. ASMI was identified as the exposure factor. UUI was the outcome variable. We first compared the baseline characteristics of individuals with and without UUI. The effect of ASMI on UUI was assessed using weighted multivariate logistic regression models. Additionally, the relat

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common urinary tract disorder that has gradually become a significant health issue affecting middle-aged and elderly women worldwide in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and female urge urinary incontinence (UUI). METHOD: This study enrolled individuals aged 20 and older to investigate the relationship between IR and female UUI. The analysis leveraged data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2016. We employed multiple logistic regression models to asses

Urinary incontinence is an important and common health problem, whose prevalence increases with age. Often quality of life is clearly affected for persons concerned. In the group of elderly individuals (> or =60 years of age) 19.3% of women and 10.4% of men report urinary incontinence. Women most frequently describe urinary stress incontinence followed by incontinence with urge symptoms (urge incontinence, mixed incontinence). In men urinary incontinence without any symptoms of stress or urge incontinence is most common followed by incontinence with urge symptoms and stress incontinence. Urina

Urinary incontinence is defined as an involuntary loss of urine, which makes social and hygienic problem. It is a symptom with different causes. According to the typical clinical manifestation it is classified as stress, urge, reflex and paradox urinary incontinence. Loss of small amount of urine related to the increase of intraabdominal pressure (during coughing, sneezing or running) is characteristic for stress urinary incontinence. Sudden and uncontrollable voiding with loss of greater amount of urine is typical for urge incontinence. Reflex incontinence means that urinary bladder is emptyi

Urinary incontinence can affect men and women to the same degree. A differentiation is made between stress incontinence (i.e. urine discharge as a result of physical activities, sneezing or coughing), urge incontinence (i.e. strong urge to void with involuntary discharge of urine), mixed urinary incontinence and special forms. While men and women share the pathophysiology of urge-associated urinary incontinence, the multifactorial female urinary stress incontinence is in contrast to the stress incontinence in men which is almost exclusively caused by prostatectomy (postprostatectomy). A follow-up was done 7 and 38 months after tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) operation in 1,113 women with mixed urinary incontinence. Mixed incontinence and predominant bother were subjectively defined. The results were analyzed according to the women's predominant bother: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, or stress and urge incontinence equally. Across the groups, stress incontinence was cured in 87 and 83% of the women at 7 and 38 months, respectively, with no difference between the three groups. Women with predominant stress incontinence had significantly better results at both 7 and 3

Forty patients with recurrence urinary stress incontinence (RUSI) were evaluated before and after Burch-colposuspension for voiding difficulties. Thirty-two (80%) patients were cured. Seven females developed an urge incontinence in the postoperative course, one female an urge plus stress incontinence. Residual urine was found in 6 of 7 patients with urge incontinence, in 5 patients a urinary tract infection. Four patients with urge incontinence after colposuspension were insulin dependent diabetics. In 18 patients residual urine was found in the postoperative course, only 6 patients were sympt

Urinary incontinence has a high prevalence in both men and women. Women suffer predominantly from stress urinary incontinence and men from urge incontinence. Other types of incontinence are less frequent. Stress urinary incontinence is caused by an insufficient urethral closure mechanism and urge incontinence by uninhibited detrusor contractions. Medical treatment is beside other conservative options and operations only one part of the treatment strategy in incontinence. Duloxetine, a serotonine-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is used to treat stress urinary incontinence, can increase activ
