Association between mesenteric panniculitis and urolithiasis.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare condition and refers to benign and nonspecific inflammation of mesenteric fat. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis of a greater prevalence of mesenteric panniculitis in patients with urolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, abdominopelvic CT scans of 500 patients were reviewed for the presence of urolithiasis and mesenteric panniculitis. The inclusion criteria were patients who were referred with acute abdominal pain and were suspected of having urolithiasis or other urinary conditions and who had un

Xanthine urolithiasis: Inhibitors of xanthine crystallization.

OBJECTIVE: To identify in vitro inhibitors of xanthine crystallization that have potential for inhibiting the formation of xanthine crystals in urine and preventing the development of the renal calculi in patients with xanthinuria. METHODS: The formation of xanthine crystals in synthetic urine and the effects of 10 potential crystallization inhibitors were assessed using a kinetic turbidimetric system with a photometer. The maximum concentration tested for each compound was: 20 mg/L for 3-methylxanthine (3-MX); 40 mg/L for 7-methylxanthine (7-MX), 1-methylxanthine (1-MX), theobromine (TB), th

Occult urolithiasis in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: Recent international guidelines suggest renal imaging to detect occult urolithiasis in all patients with asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but data regarding their prevalence and associated risk factors are limited. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for occult urolithiasis. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 96 asymptomatic PHPT patients from a university hospital in the United States with and without occult nephrolithiasis. RESULTS: Occult urolithiasis was identified in 21% of patients. Stone formers had 47% higher 24-hour urinary calcium excretion (p

Asymptomatic Urolithiasis Complicated by Nephrocutaneous Fistula.

Asymptomatic spontaneous nephrocutaneous fistula is a rare and severe complication of chronic urolithiasis. We report a case of 56-year-old woman with a nephrocutaneous fistula (NFC) which developed from a superinfected urinoma following calyceal rupture due to an obstructing calculus in the left ureter. The patient was clinically asymptomatic and came to the emergency department for a painless left flank fluctuating mass. This urinoma was superinfected, with a delayed development of renal abscesses and perirenal phlegmon found on contrast-enhanced uro-computed tomography (CT), responsible for

Struvite Urolithiasis in Long-Evans Rats.

Struvite urinary calculi, which are composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate, can cause complications including sepsis and renal failure. Struvite calculi were identified within the urinary bladder and renal pelvis of 2 Long-Evans rats that died within days after arrival from a commercial vendor. The remaining rats in the shipment were screened by physical examination, radiography, and ultrasonography, revealing an additional 2 animals that were clinically affected. These rats were euthanized, necropsied, and yielded similar findings to those from the first 2 rats. In addition, urine sam

Medical expulsive treatment in pediatric urolithiasis.

The frequency of stone disease in childhood ranges between 0.1-5 percent. Stone disease occurs as a result of enviromental, metabolic, anatomical, infectious and nutritional factors. Percutaneous nephrolitotomy, uretherorenoscopy, laparoscopic surgery, open surgery and extracorporeal shock wave lithothripsy are treatment alternatives for stone disease during childhood. However, these methods are not completely innocent. Some complications may occur after these procedures. These procedures are generally not cost- effective. Even invasive procedures have high success rates, so medical expulsive

Recurrent abdominal pain in childhood urolithiasis.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to establish the clinical presentation and features of pain attacks in children with recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) and urolithiasis. METHODS: We compared the rate of previous appendectomy among 100 consecutive patients with that of 270 control subjects. We also compared the frequency of pain attacks with that reported by children with functional or organic gastrointestinal RAP. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients had no history of dysuria or gross hematuria, and only 35 had hematuria at the first visit; 41 patients were evaluated for urolithiasis only because of a family h

Magnesium excretion and calcium oxalate urolithiasis.

One hundred fifty-five recurrent noninfectious calcium oxalate stone formers were evaluated in an effort to assess the importance of magnesium excretion on calcium oxalate stone formation. All patients evaluated had normal urinary magnesium excretion, and any elevation of the calcium/magnesium ratio was related to the presence of hypercalciuria. The findings indicate that magnesium deficiency does not appear to be a significant cause of calcium oxalate urolithiasis. If magnesium supplement is of value in some patients, it is likely related to its inhibitory effect on calcium oxalate crystalliz

Paediatric urolithiasis: Medical & surgical management & sophistication.

Success and safety of endoscopic ureterolithotripsy (EUL) in pediatric patients has been studied by Khudaybergenov et al in a recent retrospective study. The findings support EUL as a first-line treatment, with careful planning needed for younger children. Urolithiasis is a well-known condition. It can affect any part of the urinary tract. It is quite rare in children (1%-7% of all urinary stones occur during childhood). However, its increasing incidence over last several decades is a cause of concern. Childhood urinary lithiasis is related to genetic, climatic, dietary, and socioeconomic fact

Risk factors associated with feline urolithiasis.

Urinary tract diseases are among the main reasons for consultation in veterinary clinics and hospitals. It affects animals of any age, breed and gender. Among the diseases that affect this system, urolithiasis is the second largest cause of clinical signs compatible with feline urinary tract disease. The term urolithiasis refers to the presence of uroliths in any region of the urinary tract, but it is more commonly seen in the bladder and urethra. Uroliths are classified based on the type of mineral present in their composition, therefore, quantitative and qualitative analyzes are important fo

Familial Risks Between Urolithiasis and Cancer.

Urolithiasis (UL, urinary tract stone disease) has been reported to increase subsequent cancers in the urinary tract. Recently, we showed data that surveillance bias may be an important confounder in the reported associations. In the present approach we want to address the question of possible cancer risk posed by UL mechanistically. Both UL and cancer have strong genetic components and we hypothesize that familial association between UL and cancer may be plausible. We thus assess familial risks between UL and cancer, hoping to find an explanation why UL may pose a risk of cancer. UL patients

[Three patients with indinavir-related urolithiasis].

Three HIV-seropositive patients were diagnosed with urolithiasis related to the use of indinavir. The first patient was a 45-year-old white male with severe haemophilia who presented with fever and flank pain referred to the glans penis. Ultrasound and intravenous pyelography (IVP) revealed a concrement in the left renal pelvis. Discontinuation of indinavir and acidification of the urine did not reduce the stone load. Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy was then performed. The second patient, a 41-year-old white male, presented at the emergency ward with flank pain and fever. Ultrasound examination

Management of symptomatic urolithiasis during pregnancy.

Urinary calculi during pregnancy present not only a diagnostic challenge but also a management dilemma. In this retrospective study, we describe our experience with diagnosis and management of symptomatic urolithiasis in pregnant women. A total of 18 pregnant women were treated for urolithiasis at the Department of Urology, Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiao-Kang Hospital, between 1999 and 2004. The incidence of symptomatic urolithiasis during pregnancy was 0.35%. Of the 20 stones found, nine were on the right side and 11 were on the left, and two patients had bilateral urinary stones. Most urolithiasi

Urolithiasis/nephrolithiasis: what's it all about?

Urolithiasis (urinary tract calculi or stones) and nephrolithiasis (kidney calculi or stones) are well-documented common occurrences in the general population of the United States. The etiology of this disorder is multifactorial and is strongly related to dietary lifestyle habits or practices. Proper management of calculi that occur along the urinary tract includes investigation into causative factors in an effort to prevent recurrences. Urinary calculi or stones are the most common cause of acute ureteral obstruction. Approximately 1 in 1,000 adults in the United States are hospitalized annua

Silica urolithiasis without magnesium trisilicate intake.

Two cases of silica stones, without previous oral intake of magnesium trisilicate, are reported. A 64-year-old Japanese woman had bilateral renal stones. Infrared spectrophotoscopy revealed that one of the fragments consisted of silicate and the others consisted of calcium oxalate. A 75-year-old woman had right renal stones. The composition of 1 stone was a mixture of silicate and unspecified matrices. Silicate urolithiasis may not necessarily be related to oral intake of silicate-containing antacids.

Chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) in urolithiasis.

In 80 adult kidney stone formers (52 with reversible and 28 with irreversible renal impairment) laboratory and clinical data were evaluated to estimate the share of abnormalities in the metabolism of stone forming substances in the development of renal impairment, and to search for the causes of the irreversibility of renal impairment. The study confirmed the previous results from this laboratory suggesting a causal relationship between renal impairment and metabolic disorders. No significant differences in the incidence of metabolic disorders or in therapy have been found in patients with irr
