IMPORTANCE: Intrauterine hemorrhage-control devices are key second-line therapeutic interventions for refractory postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) due to uterine atony. Less is known about the detection and clinical management of failure of 2 commonly used devices: intrauterine balloon tamponade, in particular the Bakri device, and the Jada device (a vacuum-induced hemorrhage control device).
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review describes the epidemiology and management challenges of the failure of intrauterine balloon tamponade and the Jada device.

This case report describes the findings of craniofacial anomalies associated with dystocia in a mixed-breed bitch. A bitch in labour was presented for evaluation of dystocia, and an emergency caesarean section was performed. Two pups with craniofacial abnormalities were delivered by hysterotomy. One pup was stillborn, with congenital anomalies including palatoschisis (cleft palate), cheiloschisis (cleft lip), an open fontanelle, and a narrow teardrop-shaped skull. Reported are 304 patients with whom programmed childbirths were introduced, between 1976 and 1978. A control group was made up of 100 women in labour who had been hospitalised for spontaneous onset of labour but then given slow drip oxytocin infusions for secondary uterine inertia. The parameters tested (time of labour, FHF behaviour, pH of umbilical artery, Apgar score, weight, length, and perinatal mortality) did not reveal any aggravated risk to mother and child. Programmed childbirth may be recommended as another important preventive step towards lower infantile morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Dystocia occurs more commonly in some breeds of dogs than others. The Boxer breed is one of the highrisk breeds for whelping problems. The aim of this study was to document some reproductive parameters and the frequency of dystocia in Boxers.
METHODS: Two questionnaires were sent to the breeders of Boxers in Sweden during 1994 to 1997. Data from 253 whelpings and 1671 pups was received, which constitutes 56.5% of all Boxer litters registered with the Swedish Kennel Club during these years. Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) continues to be one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The four main causes of PPH are uterine atony, lacerations, retained placenta, and bleeding diathesis. In the patient with PPH, immediate evaluation is needed to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of hemorrhage. We reviewed the role of peripartum hysterectomy (PH) in the first decade of the 21st century. The study was confined to women who delivered a baby weighing 500 g or more between 2000 and 2009, and who required a hysterectomy within 72 h of delivery for obstetric reasons. Individual case records were reviewed. There were 19 cases of PH in 78,961 deliveries giving an incidence of 1 in 4,156 (0.02%).
