BACKGROUND: Fatty uterine tumors, especially pure uterine lipoma, are very rare, but clinically and radiologically, they can mimic other primary benign and malignant uterine neoplasms. Case Report. A multipara 61-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding for 3 months. Assessment by ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a hyperechoic mass in the uterine corpus. Furthermore, during radiologic investigation, there was an incidental isoechoic mass in the left lobe of the liver. Pure uterine lipoma and hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia were diagnosed.

Epidemiological and experimental studies have provided evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a main player in the development of uterine cervical neoplasms. Migration of cancer cells from the origin tissue to surrounding or distant organs is essential for tumor progression. Many studies of tumor invasion and metastases have focused on the degradation of the extracellular matrix where matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a central role. Two of these enzymes, MMP-2 and MMP-9, have been correlated with the processes of tumor cell invasion and metastasis in human cancers, includin

NTRK -rearranged spindle cell neoplasm is a recently described mesenchymal neoplasm that usually occurs in the uterine cervix of premenopausal women with variable clinical behavior. Typical immunohistochemical profile includes CD34 and S100 positivity with negative staining for desmin, estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR). We report a case of NTRK -rearranged spindle cell neoplasm with a previously unreported fusion partner ( NTRK1::TIMP3 ) located within the uterine corpus and with an unusual staining pattern, diffusely positive for desmin and PR, while negative for CD34 and

The endometrial cavity may demonstrate various imaging manifestations such as normal, reactive, inflammatory, and benign and malignant neoplasms. We evaluated usual and unusual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the uterine endometrial cavity, and described the diagnostic clues to differential diagnoses. Surgically proven pathologies of the uterine endometrial cavity were evaluated retrospectively with pathologic correlation. The pathologies included benign endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial hyperplasia and polyp, malignant endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial carcinoma a

This review summarizes neoplastic diseases in pet rabbits, covering tumor types, clinical signs, and diagnostics. Common neoplasms include reproductive (mammary, uterine), hematopoietic, skin, and internal organ tumors, with diagnosis relying on imaging, cytology, and histopathology. In rabbits, reproductive tumors like uterine adenocarcinoma remain the most common tumor of female rabbits, with increased frequency noted with age. Other tumors include lymphoma, benign cutaneous neoplasms, and rare adrenal, pituitary, and gastrointestinal neoplasms. The article emphasizes ongoing research, the i

Since the safety warning from the US Food and Drug Administration on the use of power morcellators, minimally invasive procedures involving the removal of uterine myomas and large uteri are under scrutiny. Growing evidence suggests that morcellation of undiagnosed uterine malignancies is associated with worse survival outcomes of patients affected by uterine sarcoma. However, to date, only limited data regarding morcellation of low-grade uterine neoplasms are available. In the present article, we reported a case of a (morcellator) port-site implantation of a smooth muscle tumor that occurred 6

Reproductive pathology of domestic guinea pigs is underreported to date. To provide a comprehensive review of uterine disease in guinea pigs, we performed a retrospective study of the pathology archives of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine. By histology, 13 of 37 uterine lesions in 23 animals were neoplastic; the other 24 nonneoplastic lesions included cystic endometrial hyperplasia (16 of 24), endometrial hemorrhage (3 of 24), pyometra (2 of 24), polyp (2 of 24), and mucometra (1 of 24). The most common guinea pig uterine neoplasms were uterine leiomyomas (6 of 13),

Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon neoplasm whose occurrence outside the uterus is extremely rare in the absence of metastasis or extension of a primary uterine neoplasm. When ESS occurs in such locations it is often associated with the uterine adnexa or serosal surface of various organs. Although rare, ESS is usually considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasms in the female patient. We report a case of ESS arising in the retroperitoneum and discuss the morphologic and immunohistochemical features in the context of the differential diagnosis of a retroperit

UNLABELLED: Uterine sarcomas are a group of uncommon tumors that account for approximately 1% of malignant neoplasms of the female genital tract and between 3 and 8.4% of malignant uterine neoplasms.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the factors associated with the clinical behavior of uterine sarcomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the period from October 1983 to December 2009, clinical files of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of uterine sarcoma at the National Institute of Cancerology of Mexico (INCan) were reviewed and evaluated.
RESULTS: We identified 77 cases with complete information; average ag

Uterine leiomyoma (LM) is a smooth muscle tumor occurring in 30% of women of reproductive age. This neoplasm is the most common benign tumor of female genitals. Uterus is the most frequent localization of tumor. However, LM can be detected in external genitalia, ovaries, bladder and urethra. Despite the benign nature, LM is characterized by metastasizing as one of the main properties of malignant neoplasms. For the first time, Steiner described this case in 1939. The author found similar histological structure of pulmonary and uterine neoplasms. LM metastases in bone tissue, skin, mediastinum,

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) of the uterus are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by myogenic and melanocytic differentiation. These tumors can mimic other uterine mesenchymal tumors in their clinical presentation and morphology. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding. Initial imaging revealed an endometrial polyp, which was later diagnosed as a leiomyoma on excision biopsy. A subsequent hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy revealed a uterine neoplasm composed of spindled to epithelioid cells with low-grade cytologic at

The female genital system is rarely affected in von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis. The vulva is the most frequent genital location, but vaginal, cervical, uterine, and ovarian neurofibromas have rarely been reported. We describe a case of plexiform neurofibroma affecting the uterine cervix in a patient with chronic pelvic pain and menorrhagia who had multiple cutaneous neurofibromas and 1 large paraspinal neurofibroma. A small plexiform neurofibroma, which was not grossly visible, was confined to the uterine cervix and coexisted with a uterine leiomyoma and adenomyosis. There were no neurof

The incidence of two synchronous carcinomas originating from the uterine corpus and uterine cervix, both endometrioid subtypes, is exceedingly rare. Herein, we presented synchronous early stage G1 adenocarcinoma of the uterine corpus with cervical G2 endometrioid adenocarcinoma. Although both neoplasms displayed the same histological subtype, they differed significantly according to the histological grading or clinical stage of the disease. Finally, it is worth emphasizing that both tumors were preceded by different precancerous lesions, atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) and foci of endom

We report 4 neoplasms of the kidney (2 cases) and uterus (2 cases) harboring rearrangements or amplifications of the GLI1 gene, which because of their unusual clinical presentation, morphology, and immunoprofile mimicked other neoplasms, causing significant diagnostic challenge. The neoplasms occurred in 4 female patients ages 33 to 88 years. Histologically they all demonstrated nodular growth, solid architecture, bland epithelioid to ovoid-spindle cells with pale cytoplasm set in a variably myxoid or hyalinized stroma. One uterine tumor also demonstrated a focal round cell pattern, while anot

A total of 33 tumors were observed during a time period of 15 years (1992-2006) in cynomolgus monkeys. The great majority of neoplasms was benign (23 benign neoplasms versus 10 malignant tumors). Fourteen appeared in males and 19 in females. The age of tumor-bearing animals ranged between 2 years 2 months and 13 years 9 months. Most of the tumors (22) in the cynomolgus monkeys were seen in endocrine organs (adrenal cortical adenoma, adrenal hemangioma, C-cell carcinoma, follicular adenoma), respiratory system (nasal cavity adenoma, pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma, bronchio-alveolar carcinoma

Uterine malignant stromal tumors are rare neoplasms characterized by fatal prognosis. At the moment no effective systemic treatment is available for metastases or recurrent disease. The drugs employed in advanced neoplasms are iposfamide, doxorubicin or epidoxorubicin, but the clinical response to chemotherapy is poor. Recent studies have shown that cells in gastrointestinal stromal tumors express a growth factor receptor with tyrosine kinase activity termed c-kit. Lately reports of efficacy of a specific anticancer drug with imatinib (ST1571) based on specific molecular abnormalities of proto

BACKGROUND: A uterine neoplasm was observed, as an incidental finding, during post-mortem examination of a 26-year-old female multiparous African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus). The intramural, expansile, 2 to 3 cm well-demarcated, dark-red, nodular neoplasm was located on the anterior uterine body (corpus) wall.
METHODS: The mass was examined by light microscopy and by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: The mass was confirmed as a cavernous uterine angioleiomyoma (syn. vascular leiomyoma) characterized by abundant intratumoural vasculature lined by Factor VIII-positive endothelial

Leiomyomas are benign uterine smooth muscle neoplasms with varied morphology that are well known to undergo secondary changes. Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma is a rare and distinct form of leiomyoma that poses a diagnostic challenge for clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists and can be confused with malignant uterine neoplasms. Only a few cases have been reported so far in the literature. Here we report a case of a cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma in a 60-year-old woman, emphasize its gross and histological features, and provide a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Uterine sarcoma accounts for 3-7% of uterine malignant neoplasms. It is more aggressive than epithelial neoplasms, and patients have a poor prognosis. Rhabdomyosarcoma is classified as a heterologous uterine sarcoma. It is the most common soft tissue malignancy in children while rare in adults. In young patients, the majority of genital tract rhabdomyosarcomas occur in vagina; however, the most common site of gynecologic rhabdomyosarcoma is cervix followed by uterine corpus, in adults. Uterine corpus rhabdomyosarcoma is rare in adults. Diagnosis of pure rhabdomyosarcoma in uterus i

AIMS: The CD10 antigen is expressed in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and follicle centre cell lymphoma. A recent study investigating the expression of CD10 in a wide range of non-haematopoietic neoplasms found positive staining in a small number of endometrial stromal sarcomas as well as in normal endometrial stroma. The present study aimed to ascertain whether CD10 positivity is indeed found in normal endometrial stroma and endometrial stromal neoplasms. Staining of a range of tumours which can be confused morphologically with endometrial stromal neoplasms was also undertaken to ascertain whe
