BACKGROUND: Focal malignant melanomas involving only the iris have a very good prognosis. Involvement of the iris and/or diffuse growth makes the prognosis worse. The prognostic parameters of diffusely growing malignant anterior uveal melanomas are analysed.

A study was made of the distribution of Substance P-immunoreactive fibers in chick cornea and uvea in whole mount preparation, using the indirect immunofluorescence technique. The development of these fibers during embryogenesis was also investigated. SP-fibers were present in all chick eye structures, in the various prenatal and postnatal stages examined. Their distribution was comparable with that observed by other workers in mammals. Transformation of the iris musculature from smooth to striated, during development, is not accompanied by significant changes in SP-ergic innervation.

In vitro accumulation of radioactive para-aminohippuric acid (3H-PAH) and rubidium (86Rb+) by the anterior uvea, ciliary processes, and the choroid plexus was evaluated in tissues from newborn and various aged rabbits. Epidemiological studies suggest that multiple sclerosis (MS) might be triggered by an infectious agent. Uveitis has been observed in a small percentage of MS patients. Dogs with canine distemper encephalomyelitis, another demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, have an anterior uveitis which is usually mild and asymptomatic, and dogs with persistent CNS infection and chronic distemper encephalomyelitis harbour virus persistently in the uvea. These observations in dogs suggest that pathological and virological studies of the uveitis associated with MS would be worth while.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of unexpected malignant uveal melanoma in the age of ultrasound diagnostics and to highlight the reasons for misdiagnosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All eyes were surgically removed and histologic examination was performed between 1981 and 1995. The eyes were investigated for the incidence of uveal melanoma, and the history of the unexpected malignant melanoma of the uvea or ciliary body highlighted.

We report the case of congenital ectropion uveae in a 10-year-old boy with intractable unilateral glaucoma but no systemic association. Glaucoma in congenital ectropion uveae is often poorly responsive to medial therapy and requires surgical intervention. Satisfactory results are possible if diagnosis is established early and timely surgery performed, as was the case in our patient.

RATIONALE: Congenital ectropion uveae (CEU) is a rare, nonprogressive anomaly characterized by the proliferation of the iris pigment epithelium on the anterior surface of the iris, often associated with glaucoma. Due to its rarity and complexity, standardized glaucoma surgical management is limited. To our knowledge, the application of glaucoma drainage devices in CEU is rarely documented. PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis Type I (NF-1) is a neurocutaneous disease affecting the skin, eye and peripheral nervous system. Congenital glaucoma is a rare association, but can be a prelude to the diagnosis of NF-1 later in life.
