Vaccine Adherence: From Vaccine Hesitancy to Actual Vaccination and Reasons for Refusal of Childhood Vaccines in a Group of Postpartum Mothers.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vaccine refusal or delay remains a significant public health concern, leading to lower vaccination rates and increasing the risk of preventable diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 404 mothers and 413 children, assessing vaccination coverage and conducting telephone interviews with mothers who declined vaccines to understand their reasons. RESULTS: Children of mothers who supported vaccination were more likely to be fully immunized compared to those with hesitant mothers. Among the incompletely vaccinated or unvaccinated children, 73.08% had mothers from the hes

Impact of caregivers' perceptions of malaria on their hesitancy toward childhood malaria vaccination.

BACKGROUND: There is a prevalent perception of low personal risk of malaria in Ghana. This perception and other beliefs about the disease held by caregivers may influence hesitancy toward childhood malaria vaccination. Understanding these dynamics is crucial to the national scale-up of the malaria vaccines. This study investigates this relationship to inform strategies for enhancing vaccination coverage. METHODS: This cross-sectional household study was conducted in six regions across Ghana. Data were collected from 2590 adults. Malaria vaccine hesitancy was measured by adapting the seven-ite

Vaccination Hesitancy and Its Impact on Immunization Coverage in Pediatrics: A Systematic Review.

One significant global health issue that is present in more than 190 nations globally is routine vaccination reluctance. This study aimed to synthesize the current evidence on vaccination hesitancy and its impact on immunization coverage in pediatrics. We searched for relevant studies across four databases (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/EMBASE, and Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature). Prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to extract relevant studies while excluding irrelevant ones. We found 4,085 studies on four different databases in which 23 satisfied

Understanding primary care physician perspectives on recommending HPV vaccination and addressing vaccine hesitancy.

HPV vaccination rates have improved in recent years, but remain suboptimal in the United States. Physician recommendation is associated with increased uptake; however, specific strategies used by physicians to recommend the vaccine and address hesitancy are underexplored. We iteratively conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with family medicine and pediatrics/adolescent medicine physicians recruited from four primary care settings (federally qualified health centers and hospital-affiliated practices) within a large academic-hospital system in New Jersey. Interviews aimed to understand fact

COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine hesitancy in a Brazilian state capital.

The COVID-19 pandemic was disclosed to have both positive and negative impacts on vaccine acceptance. To further comprehend its influences on the population’s perceptions about vaccination, we conducted a cross-sectional study that aimed to evaluate the trends and determinants of vaccine hesitancy before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Campo Grande, a state capital in Brazil. Data was collected through household interviews conducted between 2022 and 2023, using questions addressing both the pre- and post-pandemic periods. Information on socioeconomic and demographic characteri

The institutional roots of vaccine uptake and hesitancy: evidence from Africa.

Africa recorded some of the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the world, with only 32% of the population having completed a primary vaccination series by the end of 2023, despite widespread vaccine availability. Differences in supply and access offer only a partial explanation, pointing to the role of institutional factors-particularly corruption perceptions and distrust in government-as demand-side barriers. This study provides causally identified estimates of the effect of institutional quality on COVID-19 vaccine uptake and hesitancy across 34 African countries. Using data from the Afrob

Determinants of vaccine hesitancy among primary healthcare workers in Türkiye.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are pivotal to sustaining public confidence in vaccination. This study assessed attitudes toward vaccine hesitancy, vaccine-related knowledge, and professional factors among primary healthcare workers (PHCWs) in Türkiye. We conducted a cross-sectional study among PHCWs in Erzurum (Eastern Anatolia), Türkiye. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire captured sociodemographics, vaccine-related knowledge, practices and recommendations, and the 21‑item Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (higher scores=greater hesitancy). Analyses included descriptive statistics, correlat

Vaccine hesitancy among midlife and older adults in the United States.

Vaccine hesitancy has come to the forefront of the public health landscape in recent years, and many midlife and older adults in the United States (US) are not receiving recommended vaccines. We conducted an online survey in September 2024 with a national sample of adults ages 45-80 in the US (n = 1043) to examine their vaccine hesitancy. Overall, 42.4 % of participants were categorized as being hesitant toward vaccines. Vaccine hesitancy was correlated with political party affiliation, education level, and receipt of influenza and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations in the past y

Communication interventions to reduce parental vaccine hesitancy: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine hesitancy among parents and caregivers is a growing issue that can lead to reduced vaccine coverage and corresponding outbreaks of disease. Different interventions to reduce vaccine hesitancy have been developed, including the use of remote online communication that has become more common during the COVID-19 pandemic, but their impacts and effectiveness are unclear. In this systematic review, we aimed to identify effective types of communication that reduce vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: Multiple online databases were searched on April 1st, 2022 as well as March 18th, 2024.

The lingering challenge: addressing vaccine hesitancy in a post-pandemic world.

Last time the world faced a deadly pandemic was the H1N1 Spanish flu in 1918, which affected almost one-third of the world's population (500 million people). Since then, almost 100 years later, we are now facing another pandemic of the SARS-CoV2 virus (COVID-19), which is still endemic to this day. As the technology evolved during those 100 years, an effective vaccine for COVID-19 was produced within only a year, a huge feat. But, unfortunately, due to its fast development, another force would arise limiting the impact of the vaccine: vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaxxers, which John Hopkins and

Influenza Vaccine Hesitancy and Its Determinants Among Rheumatology Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with rheumatic disease (RD) have an increased risk of influenza and its complications. Despite inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) recommendations, IIV uptake in patients with RD is suboptimal, a problem of increasing importance in the COVID-19 era. We estimated the frequency of IIV hesitancy and associated factors among Canadian patients with RD. METHODS: A cross-sectional vaccine hesitancy survey was completed by rheumatology clinic patients (November 2019 to January 2020). Patients rated their likelihood of receiving the influenza vaccine (scale of 0-10). We categorized
