Kansas Family Physicians Perceptions of Parental Vaccination Hesitancy.

INTRODUCTION: In the past few decades, patients expressing the idea that vaccines are unsafe or unneeded have been experienced increasingly by physicians and other healthcare providers. Discussions with patients regarding their reasons for vaccine refusals are important, as it may provide information that can be utilized in an intervention to increase vaccination rates and combat the spread of diseases that are making a resurgence in the United States. The main objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of family physicians as to why parents in Kansas may be vaccine hesitant. METH

[Factors influencing uptake of influenza vaccination in healthcare workers. Findings from a study in a general hospital].

Despite recommendations, influenza vaccination coverage in health professionals remains low throughout the world. In order to identify reasons for adherence or refusal we conducted a study within our hospital by means of interview questionnaires which were distributed to health care workers to reveal factors influencing acceptance or refusal of vaccination and to get suggestions to improve vaccination coverage. There is good overlap between our results and data obtainable from international literature: the main motivating factor for vaccination is personal protection against influenza, while o

Attitudes towards vaccination: users of complementary and alternative medicine versus non-users.

PRINCIPLES: Children whose parents use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) often show a lower rate of vaccination than those of parents favouring conventional medicine. We have investigated whether this applies to the paediatric patients presenting to an emergency department in German-speaking Switzerland, where popularity of CAM is rather high. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed of paediatric patients presenting to an urban, tertiary paediatric emergency department. 1,007 (63%) of the distributed 1,600 questionnaires were available for analysis. RESULTS: 12.7% of all r

Anti-varicella-zoster vaccination in contacts of children receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy: a prospective pilot study.

Varicella may be a severe infection in children with malignancy. Varicella vaccination is either not recommended for immunocompromised children or it requires temporary discontinuation of immunosuppression. We prospectively evaluated the feasibility of a varicella vaccination programme of household contacts of varicella-negative children receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy. From April 2004 to April 2005, 207 children were evaluated; in 49 (24 percent) the attending physicians collected no history about previous varicella and performed no serological evaluation before any transfusion. Among t

Willingness to Receive a COVID-19 Vaccination Among Incarcerated or Detained Persons in Correctional and Detention Facilities - Four States, September-December 2020.

Incarcerated and detained persons are at increased risk for acquiring COVID-19. However, little is known about their willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. During September-December 2020, residents in three prisons and 13 jails in four states were surveyed regarding their willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination and their reasons for COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy or refusal. Among 5,110 participants, 2,294 (44.9%) said they would receive a COVID-19 vaccination, 498 (9.8%) said they would hesitate to receive it, and 2,318 (45.4%) said they would refuse to receive it. Willingness t

Polio vaccine hesitancy in the networks and neighborhoods of Malegaon, India.

OBJECTIVES: Eradication and control of childhood diseases through immunization can only work if parents allow their children to be vaccinated. To learn about social network factors associated with polio vaccine hesitancy, we investigated social and spatial clustering of households by their vaccine acceptance status in Malegaon, India, an area known for vaccine refusal and repeated detection of polio cases. METHODS: We interviewed family heads from 2462 households in 25 neighborhoods in July 2012 and constructed social networks based on advice seeking from other households. We restricted our m

Assessing Potential Confounding and Misclassification Bias When Studying the Safety of the Childhood Immunization Schedule.

OBJECTIVES: Some parents are concerned the childhood immunization schedule could increase risk for allergic disorders, including asthma. To inform future safety studies of this speculated association, a parent survey was conducted to examine the risk of misclassification of vaccination status in electronic health record data, and to assess the potential for confounding if asthma risk factors varied by vaccination status. METHODS: A survey was conducted among parents of children 19 to 35 months old at 6 medical organizations within the Vaccine Safety Datalink. Parents of children in 4 vaccinat

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Chinese residents: A national cross-sectional survey in the community setting.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine hesitancy is associated with community aggregation, inducing low vaccine coverage and potentially more frequent community-level outbreak. Addressing vaccine hesitancy in community settings should be a priority for healthcare providers. A cross-sectional online questionnaire survey was conducted during June and July 2022. Ten sites were set up in eastern, central, and western China, from where residents were recruited in a community setting. In total, 7,241 residents from 71 communities were included. Of the residents, 7.0% ha

Drivers and barriers of seasonal influenza vaccination 2015/16 & 2019/20 to 2022/23 - a survey on why most Norwegians don't get the flu vaccine.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the reasons adults in the general population, influenza risk groups (RGs) and health care workers (HCWs) in Norway give for their vaccination choices and whether these reasons vary between groups or over time in order to further improve influenza vaccination coverage. METHODS: Respondents of a nationally representative telephone survey conducted by Statistics Norway were asked "What was the most important reason why you did/did not get vaccinated?". The question on influenza non-vaccination was included in 2016 and in 2020 to 2023 and the question on in

What is the importance of vaccine hesitancy in the drop of vaccination coverage in Brazil?

The successful Programa Nacional de Imunizações do Brasil (Brazilian National Immunization Program) has been experiencing a major challenge with regard to vaccination coverage for children, which has been dropping. Several aspects are related, but certainly vaccine hesitancy has been strengthening itself as one of the main concerns of Brazilian public administrators and researchers. Vaccine hesitancy is the delay in acceptance or refusal despite having the recommended vaccines available in health services, being a phenomenon that varies over time, over location and over types of vaccines. Parental concerns, behaviours, and attitudes associated with childhood vaccinations in Albania: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is an increasing global concern, contributing to vaccine preventable disease outbreaks in the last decade. Over the past decade, Albania has experienced a rise in VH, with childhood immunisation coverage decreasing from 94% in 2008-2009 to 75% in 2017-2018. In 2023, World Health Organization (WHO) reported a suboptimal 83% coverage for the first dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in Albania. This study aims to identify the most hesitated and refused childhood vaccines and to assess the most frequently reported parental concerns, behaviours, and a

Caregiver COVID-19 vaccine status and its influence on pediatric vaccination decisions in a US cohort.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite availability of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines for children, uptake of this vaccine remains low in the United States. Caregiver attitudes and behaviors play a key role in child vaccine decisions, yet little is known about the reasons for vaccine refusal within families or the relationship between COVID-19 vaccine and routine childhood immunization refusal. This study examined 1) associations between caregiver and child COVID-19 vaccination status, 2) alignment of reasons for vaccine non-acceptance between the caregiver themselves and for their child, and 3)

[Consequences of opposition to vaccination in France and Europe. How to maintain effective vaccine coverage in 2010?].

Refusal of vaccination can result in inadequate vaccine coverage. The collective benefit of immunisation depends on a sufficient and sustained level of vaccine coverage. Low vaccine coverage can lead to the persistence of preventable diseases and, in some cases, to a dangerous shift in the age of pathogen encounter towards adulthood. This is the case of measles in Europe, where some countries, including France, have not reached the effective vaccine coverage rate of 95%. Outbreaks are occurring, leading to complications (encephalitis and pneumonia) in adolescents and adults, necessitating hosp

Childhood immunization: when physicians and parents disagree.

Persistent fears about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, and whether immunization programs are still needed, have led a significant minority of parents to refuse vaccination. Are parents within their rights when refusing to consent to vaccination? How ought physicians respond? Focusing on routine childhood immunization, we consider the ethical, legal, and clinical issues raised by 3 aspects of parental vaccine refusal: (1) physician counseling; (2) parental decision-making; and (3) continuing the physician-patient relationship despite disagreement. We also suggest initiatives that could inc

Potential acceptance of HPV vaccination at ages 9-10 in the United States among parents of HPV vaccine-naïve children.

This study explored attitudes/perceptions among parents who have not yet agreed to HPV vaccination for their 11-12-y-old children. US parents/guardians were recruited from a consumer panel for this online, cross-sectional survey. Parents (≥18 y) were eligible if their oldest child was 11-12, participated in their child's vaccine decisions/visit, had not decided on, or would refuse the HPV vaccine, and understood English. Parents were excluded if their child had medical conditions affecting eligibility for HPV vaccination or if they declined to provide consent. Sampling quotas were used for par
