[Epidemiological analysis of immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases: rubella, measles, mumps and chickenpox].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections are regarded as typical diseases of childhood: They are normally clinically mild and result in lifelong immunity. Severe clinical disease is known in immunocompromised patients; rubella virus infections during pregnancy often result in congenital rubella syndrome. All these diseases are preventable by vaccination which is recommended in Germany, recently vaccination against VZV for teenager without immunity since July 2001. In the following study we screened for immunity against the four viruses. PAT

Impact of national immunization schedule on vaccine preventable diseases: a hospital based study.

An analysis of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) in two block years, i.e., 1972-1975 and 1986-1989 showed an overall decline in morbidity and mortality. Improvement in morbidity was most noticeable in typhoid fever followed by polio and tetanus. However, in tuberculosis and measles with compilations, there was a significant increase in admission rates 3.8 vs 4.4% and 1.8 vs 2.2%, respectively. Mortality in vaccine preventable diseases except polio has declined significantly.

Vaccine hesitancy and the resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases: the way forward for Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country.

This study engaged health professionals in in-depth, semi-structured interviews to explore their opinions concerning the issues surrounding vaccine hesitancy in Malaysia and strategies to improve vaccination to stamp the rise of vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). Opinions on how to address the resurgence of VPDs in the era of increasing vaccine hesitancy were obtained. Eight health professionals, including geriatricians, pediatricians, microbiologists, public health specialists, and family medicine specialists were interviewed. The influence of anti-vaccination propaganda, past-experience of

Review: The return of vaccine-preventable diseases: Implications for pediatric surgical and perioperative care.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) have long been considered rare in modern pediatric practice, a success attributable to sustained high immunization coverage. However, recent declines in vaccination rates have reintroduced the possibility that surgical teams will encounter conditions once thought largely historical. This review examines the emerging intersection of vaccine hesitancy and pediatric surgical care, highlighting the clinical, perioperative, and systems-level implications of the increasing number of under-immunized children. The resurgence of VPDs presents new and renewed challeng

Serological immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in children with inflammatory bowel disease at diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, vaccination coverage in this population is often suboptimal. This retrospective study assessed the vaccination status and vaccine serology of children diagnosed with IBD in a high-income country with broad vaccine access. METHODS: Medical records of children under 16 years diagnosed with IBD between 2009 and 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic and clinical data, vaccine history, and vaccine serology, at the time of diagnosis, were analyzed. RESULTS: A total o

Direct Medical Costs of Four Vaccine-Preventable Infectious Diseases in Older Adults in Spain.

OBJECTIVE: Protection against vaccine-preventable diseases is especially relevant in older adults due to age-related decline in immunity (immunosenescence). However, adult vaccination remains a challenge with overall low coverage rates, which has an impact on both the patients who have these diseases and the health care system in terms of resource use and costs derived. This study aimed to estimate the direct economic impact of herpes zoster, pneumococcal disease, influenza and pertussis in Spanish adults 45 years and older. METHODS: Data from 2015 were extracted from two Spanish public datab

Changing demographics and immunity to vaccine preventable diseases in people with HIV in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable infections. This research describes, in the context of changing patient demographics, the seroprevalence of vaccine preventable viral infections among attendees of the largest centre for HIV positive patients in Ireland. METHODS: Baseline serum IgG results for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella zoster virus (VZV) & hepatitis A, as well as hepatitis B sAg, cAb and sAb results, were retrieved for 2534 clinic attendees attending in 2018. Results were available for between 990 and 23

Impact of Routine Childhood Immunization in Reducing Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Current routine immunizations for children aged ≤10 years in the United States in 2019 cover 14 vaccine-preventable diseases. We characterize the public-health impact of vaccination by providing updated estimates of disease incidence with and without universally recommended pediatric vaccines. METHODS: Prevaccine disease incidence was obtained from published data or calculated using annual case estimates from the prevaccine period and United States population estimates during the same period. Vaccine-era incidence was calculated as the average incidence over the mos

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in Hospitalized Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Nationwide Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) entails a higher risk of infections, including those that could be prevented with immunizations. Current Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and American College of Gastroenterology vaccine recommendations for patients with IBD are based on low levels of evidence. METHODS: We conducted a population-based descriptive cohort study using the US National Inpatient Sample ICD-9 codes from 2012 to 2015. We measured the frequency of patients with IBD who were admitted to the hospital with a vaccine-preventable disease (VPD). Frequencies and demog

The impact of immunization programs on 10 vaccine preventable diseases in Italy: 1900-2015.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination has determined a dramatic decline in morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases over the last century. However, low perceived risk of the infectious threat and increased concern about vaccines' safety led to a reduction in vaccine coverage, with increased risk of disease outbreaks. METHODS: Annual surveillance data of nationally communicable infectious diseases in Italy between 1900 and 2015 were used to derive trends in morbidity and mortality rates before and after vaccine introduction, focusing particularly on the effect of vaccination programs. Autoregressive

Expansion of Vaccination Services and Strengthening Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Surveillance in Haiti, 2010-2016.

Following the 2010 earthquake, Haiti was at heightened risk for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) outbreaks due to the exacerbation of long-standing gaps in the vaccination program and subsequent risk of VPD importation from other countries. Therefore, partners supported the Haitian Ministry of Health and Population to improve vaccination services and VPD surveillance. During 2010-2016, three polio, measles, and rubella vaccination campaigns were implemented, achieving a coverage > 90% among children and maintaining Haiti free of those VPDs. Furthermore, Haiti is on course to eliminate mater

Seroprevalence and vaccination coverage of vaccine-preventable diseases in perinatally HIV-1-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Even in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV-infected subjects are at higher risk of complications from vaccine-preventable diseases than those uninfected. The current international guidelines strongly recommend that these patients should receive all the routine childhood vaccinations. Although these children represent an appropriate target for immunization, the available data indicate suboptimal coverage rates. METHODS: To evaluate seroprotection/seropositivity rates and vaccination coverage against the common vaccine-preventable diseases, all patients wit

Epidemiology of vaccine-preventable invasive diseases in Catalonia in the era of conjugate vaccines.

We investigated the incidence and distribution of cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) and invasive Hemophilus influenzae disease (IHiD) notified by hospital laboratories to the Microbiological Reporting System of Catalonia between 2005 and 2009. Incidence rates were compared using the rate ratio (RR) and 95% CI were calculated. A value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Of the 6,661 cases, 6,012 were IPD, 436 IMD and 213 IHiD. The global annual incidence per 10 ( 5) inhabitants was 16.62 (95% CI 16.20-17.04) for IPD, 1.21 (95% C

Impact of immunization programs on 11 childhood vaccine-preventable diseases in China: 1950-2018.

To evaluate the achievements of China's immunization program between 1950 and 2018, we chose 11 vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) as representative notifiable diseases and used annual surveillance data obtained between 1950 and 2018 to derive disease incidence and mortality trends. Quasi-Poisson and polynomial regression models were used to estimate the impacts of specific vaccine programs, and life-table methods were used to calculate the loss of life expectancy, years of life lost, and loss of working years. The total notification number for the 11 VPDs was 211,866,000 from 1950 to 2018. T
