Hepatoprotective Potential of Indian Medicinal Plants.

INTRODUCTION: The liver is essential for both the body's removal of waste materials and the metabolism of nutrients, it is critical for sustaining general health. However, a number of factors, including viral infections, immune system malfunctions, cancer, alcohol intake, and drug toxicity, are contributing to the rising prevalence of liver problems. Alternative approaches to liver disease treatment are being investigated due to the potential limitations of conventional medical treatments. In this regard, the possible hepatoprotective effects of medicinal plants containing bioactive chemicals

Bilberry anthocyanins improve neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction in APP/PSEN1 mice via the CD33/TREM2/TYROBP signaling pathway in microglia.

Alzheimer's disease, characterized by neuroinflammation and beta-amyloid protein plaques, is a memory-threatening neurodegenerative disease with no effective treatment. Here, the effect of bilberry anthocyanins (BA) on cognitive functions was evaluated using APP/PSEN1 transgenic Alzheimer's disease model mice and their WT littermates. Our results revealed that BA appreciably improves learning and memory abilities and reverses defects to cognitive functions in APP/PSEN1 mice. Furthermore, BA reverses brain, liver and kidney damage caused by Alzheimer's disease, with no significant changes in ox

Purified anthocyanin supplementation improves endothelial function via NO-cGMP activation in hypercholesterolemic individuals.

BACKGROUND: Anthocyanins have been shown to improve endothelial function in animal models. However, whether these compounds have similar beneficial effects in humans is largely unknown. METHODS: In a short-term crossover study, 12 hypercholesterolemic individuals were given oral anthocyanins (320 mg) isolated from berries or placebo. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was assessed before and after the intervention. In a long-term intervention trial (12 weeks), 150 hypercholesterolemic individuals were given anthocyanins (320 mg/day, n = 75) or placebo (n = 75), after which we measur

European Bilberry Extract Ameliorates Dietary Advanced Glycation End Products-Induced Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis in Rats via Gut Microbiota and Its Metabolites.

Background: Gut dysbiosis is implicated in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by diets rich in advanced glycation end products (AGEs). European bilberry extract (EBE) exerts a regulatory effect on gut microbiota. Nevertheless, it is still unknown whether EBE influences NASH via gut microbiota and their metabolites. This study aimed to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of EBE on NASH caused by a long-term AGEs diet. Methods: Rats fed with a high-AGE diet were orally administered with EBE for 80 weeks, and NASH was measured. 16S rRNA analysis and targ

Resveratrol and Other Natural Oligomeric Stilbenoid Compounds and Their Therapeutic Applications.

The use of natural compounds as an alternative to synthetic molecules has become a significant subject of interest in recent decades. Stilbenoids are a group of phenolic compounds found in many plant species and they have recently gained the focus of a multitude of studies in medicine and chemistry, resveratrol being the most representative molecule. In this review, we focused on the research that illustrates the therapeutic potential of this class of natural molecules considering various diseases with higher incidence rates. PubChem database was searched for bioactivities of natural stilbenoi

Adjuvant Properties of Caffeic Acid in Cancer Treatment.

Caffeic acid (CA) is a polyphenol belonging to the phenylpropanoid family, commonly found in plants and vegetables. It was first identified by Hlasiwetz in 1867 as a breakdown product of caffetannic acid. CA is biosynthesized from the amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine through specific enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Extensive research since its discovery has revealed various health benefits associated with CA, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. These effects are attributed to its ability to modulate several pathways, such as inhibiting NFkB, STAT3, and ERK
