Background: Previous studies have proved that low-level vagus nerve stimulation (LLVS) could suppress acute obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). Objective: This study investigates the underlying electrophysiological, neural, and cardiomyocyte injury mechanisms on acute OSA-induced AF, examining whether LLVS can attenuate or reverse this remodeling. Methods and Results: Eighteen mongrel dogs received endotracheal intubation under general anesthesia and were randomly divided into three groups: the OSA group (simulated OSA with clamping of the trachea

BACKGRUOUND: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) of the left liver often shows left-sided lymph node (LN) metastasis. If gastric lesser curvature is extensively dissected, it can induce an iatrogenic injury to the extragastric vagus nerve branches that control motility of the pyloric sphincter and lead to gastric stasis. To cope with such LN dissection-associated gastric stasis, we performed pyloroplasty preemptively. The objective of this study was to analyze our 20-year experience of preemptive pyloroplasty performed in 10 patients.
METHODS: We investigated clinical sequences of 10 patien

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions annually and is a leading contributor to disability and mortality. The condition is marked by oxidative stress, inflammation, and pyroptosis, which play significant roles in neuronal impairment and functional deficits. Recent findings suggest that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) provides neuroprotective effects in TBI, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to determine in an animal model whether VNS enhances neural functional recovery post-TBI by inhibiting pyroptosis via the Orexin-A (OX-A)/NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDM

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord paralysis combined with dysphagia following brain injury is a severe complication associated with aspiration pneumonia, asphyxiation, and malnutrition, for which traditional rehabilitation yields limited efficacy. Non-invasive vagus nerve magnetic stimulation (nVNMS) is an emerging neuromodulation technology; however, systematic clinical studies addressing this specific dual-deficit population remain lacking.
METHODS: A prospective case series study was conducted at Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital (June 2024-May 2025), consecutively enrolling 38 inpatients with brain in

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current pharmacological approaches to prevent hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) are limited. To mitigate hepatic injury, more research is needed to improve the understanding of hepatic IRI. Depending on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, acupuncture therapy has been used for the treatment of ischemic diseases with good efficacy. However, the efficacy and mechanism of acupuncture for hepatic IRI are still unclear.
METHODS: Blood provided to the left and middle lobe of mice livers was blocked with a non-invasive clamp and then the clamps were removed for

BACKGROUND: Recovery of upper extremity function remains a major unmet need for individuals with chronic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with task-specific rehabilitation has been shown to enhance neuroplasticity and motor recovery in stroke, but evidence in SCI is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of pairing VNS with upper extremity rehabilitation in individuals with chronic cervical SCI, and to explore preliminary effects on upper extremity function.
METHODS: This single-site, triple-blind, randomized, sham-controlled pilot

INTRODUCTION: Pairing vagus nerve stimulation with traditional rehabilitation therapies results in improved motor recovery in people with stroke. However, this approach has not yet been studied in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Motor recovery continues to be challenging after SCI, and there is a need for innovative research strategies to enhance motor recovery after SCI. Hence, this pilot randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and potential efficacy of pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with rehabilitation therapy to restore the motor function of the pa

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation approach engaging vagal afferent pathways involved in autonomic, gastrointestinal, and immune regulation; its effects on gastric motor function in critical illness remain uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To assess feasibility, safety, and preliminary physiological signals of taVNS on gastric motility in septic patients with acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI).
METHODS: In this single-center, randomized, sham-controlled pilot trial with blinded outcome assessment, adult ICU patients with sepsis-associat

"Whiplash"-type injuries are commonly encountered and often cause neck pain, neck stiffness, and headaches. However, these injuries can have rare and poorly recognized complications, such as the development of a prevertebral hematoma leading to acute respiratory failure in the emergency department, followed by severe, life-threatening dysphagia and recurrent aspirations. In the patient described herein, a whiplash injury was accompanied by vocal cord paralysis and dysphonia (vagus nerve), dysgeusia (glossopharyngeal nerve, vagus nerve), and upper esophageal spasm (cricopharyngeal muscle, vagus

Injuries to the hypoglossal and vagus nerves are the most commonly reported injuries during carotid endarterectomy. While unilateral single nerve injury is usually well tolerated, bilateral or combined nerve injuries can pose a serious threat to life. This study aims to increase awareness of the inferior pharyngeal vein, which usually passes posterior to the internal carotid artery but sometimes crosses anterior to it. Injury to either or both hypoglossal and vagus nerves can occur during control of unexpected haemorrhage from the torn and retracted edges of the inferior pharyngeal vein. We re

Peripheral nerve injuries associated with carotid endarterectomy are fairly common but not emphasized in reported results of carotid endarterectomy. The sensory nerves to the submandibular skin and ear lobe are often damaged. Motor nerves VII, IX, X, XI and XII may be injured at surgery. The commonest motor injuries involve the facial, vagus and hypoglossal nerves. Carotid endarterectomy was studied prospectively over 1 year to document the incidence of nerve injury. Nerve injury occurred in 12% of patients, with facial and vagus nerves being involved in 4% each. Careful surgical technique bas

Vagus nerve injury may complicate carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) branches from the vagus nerve, innervating the ipsilateral vocal cord. Vagus nerve injury can cause vocal cord dysfunction. Intraoperative vocal cord monitoring can detect vagus nerve injury during CEA. A patient with distorted neck anatomy from radiotherapy to treat oropharyngeal cancer and resultant right vocal cord paralysis required left CEA. Anticipating difficult neck dissection risking vagus nerve damage with associate RLN malfunction, we added vocal cord electromyography (EMG) to routine

OBJECTIVES: Vagus nerve injury is a feared complication of antireflux surgery (ARS) that may negatively affect reflux control. The aim of the present prospective study was to evaluate short-term and long-term impact of vagus nerve injury, evaluated by pancreatic polypeptide response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia (PP-IH), on the outcome of ARS.
METHODS: In the period from 1990 until 2000, 125 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) underwent ARS at a single center. Before and 6 months after surgery, vagus nerve integrity testing (PP-IH), 24-h pH-monitoring, gastric emptying, and

Vagus nerve stimulation for treatment of epilepsy is considered safe; reports of severe complications are rare. The authors report on two developmentally disabled patients who experienced vocal cord paralysis weeks after placement of a vagus nerve stimulator. In both cases, traction injury to the vagus nerve resulting in vocal cord paralysis was caused by rotation of the pulse generator at the subclavicular pocket by the patient. Traumatic vagus nerve injury caused by patients tampering with their device has never been reported and may be analogous to a similar phenomenon reported for cardiac

Iatrogenic glossopharyngeal nerve injuries are commonly associated with procedures such as a tonsillectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and endotracheal intubation. We present a previously unreported complication of a thread lift procedure in the jowl region, causing damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve through compression. The glossopharyngeal nerve belongs to the bulbar group of the cranial nerves. It is connected with the vagus and, therefore, is closely associated with the latter functionally and anatomically. Damage to the former may present with cardiovascular complications associated with t

The present study was designed to examine the vagus nerve system, atrioventricular ganglion, and changes in cardiomyocytes in 45 cases of the fatal outcome of the disease among 20 patients who suffered a craniovertebral injury and 25 ones presenting with acute coronary insufficiency. Special attention was given to the central and peripheral parts of the vagus nerve system. The study revealed lesions in the jugular ganglia and their association with the previous craniovertebral injuries accompanied by hemorrhage in these ganglia, nerve trunks, and soft tissues of the jugular foramina. The well

The incidence of local nerve injury among 192 consecutive carotid endarterectomies in 162 patients between 1977-1983 was determined from review of the medical records. Two facial nerve, 5 hypoglossal nerve, and 2 vagus nerve injuries were discovered for a total incidence of 4.7%. Only the 2 facial nerve injuries failed to improve over 2 years. Followup ranged from 1 to 60 months in this group of patients. Careful attention to details of tissue dissection at surgery should lower the incidence of nerve injury during carotid endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has become an increasingly popular procedure for the treatment of epilepsy and depression. Significant complications or side effects associated with VNS surgery may result from either the inadvertent direct injury to the vagus nerve as part of the surgical approach, placement of the electrode, or the concomitant stimulation of vagal efferent fibers. To mitigate these effects, the recognition of anatomic variants that may place the nerve at increased risk is necessary.

Over the past few decades, evidence accumulated to indicate that parasympathetic innervation regulates liver injury and regeneration. Liver derives its parasympathetic input via vagus nerve. In animal models, vagus nerve stimulation and transection are frequently used to determine the impact of parasympathetic input on liver injury responses. Such strategies provide limited understanding of postneuronal mechanisms involved in the regulation of liver injury. The hepatic branch of vagus nerve releases acetylcholine (ACh), which activates muscarinic and nicotinic receptors in hepatocytes as well
