BACKGROUND: Vasa previa is an obstetrical condition in which fetal vessels located near the cervix traverse the fetal membranes unprotected by underlying placenta. Type I vasa previa arises directly from a velamentous cord root, whereas types II and III arise from an accessory lobe or a distal lobe of the same placenta, respectively. Fetoscopic laser ablation for types II and III vasa previa is a novel therapeutic option with benefits that include surgical resolution of the vasa previa, avoidance of prolonged hospitalization, and opportunity for a term vaginal delivery. The potential risks of

We report the prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa using transvaginal sonography and color Doppler. This case supports the previously reported association of vasa previa with second trimester low-lying placentas and in-vitro fertilization. Sonographic examination for vasa previa should be considered in pregnancies with low-lying placentas and those resulting from in-vitro fertilization.

Vasa previa is a pregnancy complication that occurs when unprotected fetal blood vessels traverse the cervical os, placing the fetus at high risk of exsanguination and fetal death. These fetal vessels may be compromised by fetal movement and compression, leading to poor oxygen distribution and asphyxiation. Diagnostic tools for vasa previa management and preterm labor (PTL) include transvaginal ultrasound, cervical length (CL) surveillance and use of fetal fibronectin (FFN) testing. These tools can prove to be quite useful as they allow for lead time in the prediction of PTL and spontaneous ru

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review published literature and calculate the prevalence of vasa previa and its known risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, PubMed (non-MEDLINE and in process), and www.clinicaltrials.gov were searched from inception to March 2018 using indexing terms "vasa previa," "placenta previa," "low lying placenta," "succenturiate lobe," "bilobate placenta," "bilobed placenta," and "velamentous insertion." All original research studies reporting on 5 or more pregnancies with vasa previa were included. The search was limited to studies o

Ultrasound and Doppler imaging have proven to be valuable antepartum diagnostic tools for the early recognition of vasa previa. Recent reports have demonstrated that successful detection and timely management can subsequently reduce the risk of a life-threatening fetal hemorrhage. We present the fourth reported case of vasa previa detected antenatally by ultrasound. While conscientious attention to the risk factors and a high index of clinical suspicion remain important considerations, we believe that ultrasound and color Doppler flow analysis represent a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for t

OBJECTIVE: To clarify whether the maternal backgrounds and perinatal outcomes of the three types of vasa previa (VP) differ based on placental location and cord insertion.
METHODS: A retrospective questionnaire survey of VP cases in all 408 perinatal centers in Japan was conducted. The survey covered the clinical information of VP cases, including maternal characteristics, prenatal management, and perinatal outcomes, between January 2020 and December 2022. These backgrounds and events were compared among the three types of VP.
RESULTS: Two-hundred and seventy-nine cases of VP were analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare costs of two strategies for third-trimester type II vasa previa management: (1) fetoscopic laser ablation surgery (FLS) referral and (2) standard management (SM).
STUDY DESIGN: A decision analytic model and cost-benefit analysis from a health care perspective were performed. The population included patients with type II vasa previa at approximately 32 weeks. SM entailed 32-week antepartum admission and cesarean at approximately 35 weeks. FLS referral included consultation and possible laser surgery at 32 weeks for willing/eligible candidates. Successful laser su

Unrecognized vasa previa carries a significant risk of fetal mortality. Advances in ultrasound have improved detection of vasa previa and led to a dramatic reduction in fetal morbidity and mortality. However, current management strategies require prolonged hospitalized surveillance, preterm delivery prior to the onset of labor or rupture of membranes, and a cesarean delivery. Fetoscopic laser ablation of type II vasa previa allows for the possibility of term vaginal delivery. We present a patient who underwent successful laser photocoagulation of a type II vasa previa at 32(5)/7 weeks' gestati

INTRODUCTION: Vasa previa, a condition where unprotected fetal blood vessels lie in proximity to the internal cervical opening, is a potentially lethal obstetric complication. The precarious situation of these vessels increases the risk of fetal hemorrhage with spontaneous or artificial rupture of membranes, frequently causing fetal/neonatal demise or severe morbidity. As a result, in many centers, inpatient management forms the mainstay when vasa previa is diagnosed antenatally. This study aimed to determine whether a subpopulation of pregnancies diagnosed antenatally with vasa previa could b

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns in pregnancies complicated with vasa previa and velamentous cord insertion (VCI).
METHODS: A retrospective study comparing FHR patterns in pregnancies and subsequent pregnancies with/without VCI and in pregnancies with/without vasa previa was conducted. For each patient, FHR patterns were compared to the subsequent pregnancy. Deliveries occurred between the years 1988 and 2012 in a tertiary medical center. FHR patterns were evaluated according to the ACOG guidelines.
RESULTS: During the study period, there were 184 pregnancies wit

We report a case of prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa, using colour Doppler imaging. This affection is rare, but can be responsible for very severe fetal complications during the delivery. Elements of the diagnosis were demonstrated in the clinical case and discussed. This is a new use of transvaginal colour Doppler in Obstetrics.

Vasa previa is a rare but potentially fatal obstetric condition in which fetal vessels traverse the internal cervical os without the protection of placental tissue or Wharton's jelly, making them highly vulnerable to rupture during labor or spontaneous membrane rupture. This can result in rapid fetal exsanguination and death. While current management involves planned cesarean delivery before the onset of labor, fetoscopic laser ablation (FLA) has recently emerged as a minimally invasive alternative for selected cases, particularly type II and III vasa previa, allowing for pregnancy prolongatio

Vasa previa is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition to the fetus. Timely antenatal diagnosis and delivery by cesarean section (CS) can lead to a favorable outcome. Here, we report a case of recurrent pregnancy loss (G3A2) with vasa previa, which was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound. She was admitted at her 31st week with bleeding per vaginum (PV) provisionally diagnosed as antepartum hemorrhage (APH) and managed conservatively as placenta previa. Follow-up ultrasonography (USG) revealed vasa previa at 33 weeks. The fetus was delivered by lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) aft

INTRODUCTION: A vasa previa (VP) refers to aberrant chorionic vessels which can either connect the chorionic plate to a velamentous cord (type I) or a succenturiate or accessory lobe to the main placental mass (type II).
METHODS: We performed retrospective cohort study of 32 singleton pregnancies diagnosed with VP. The levels of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and unconjugated estriol (uE3) were measured at 15-18 weeks as part of the triple test screening for Trisomy 21. The data were subdivided according to the type of VP and compared with those of

OBJECTIVE: To report on the association of gestational age at delivery and neonatal outcomes in prenatally diagnosed vasa previa.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study at two academic/community hybrid hospitals, covered by the same maternal-fetal medicine group. Neonatal characteristics and outcomes were compared between cases of prenatally diagnosed vasa previa delivered at gestational age <36 weeks and ≥36 weeks.
RESULTS: We identified 59 cases of vasa previa, of which 2 were excluded, one due to delivery at 28 weeks for preeclampsia, and one because it was not diagnosed prenatally, leavin

Ruptured vasa previa in tenn pregnancy is rare but usually catastrophic if emergency delivery is not achieved. The authors present a case of ruptured vasa previa in velamentous cord insertion placenta. The fetus survived after intensive treatment immediately after delivery by cesarean section, but, unfortunately, died after the family gave him up. Defects in the vessel wall architecture were'visualized and confirmed by histopathologic examination and might be responsible for the vessel rupture. Prenatal sonographic identification of cord insertion site into the placenta is encouraged as standa
