Coronary arteriovenous fistulas are very rare findings and predominantly drain into the right atrium or the right ventricle. Echocardiography and x-ray coronary angiography are established methods in the detection of this anomalies. It is reported on a patient, in whom an anomaly with dilatation of the circumflex coronary artery, aneurysma and drainage over an arteriovenous fistula in the right ventricle was observed. By means of magnetic resonance tomography with bolustracking technique the vessel course and the dynamics of perfusion are noninvasive shown beside the imaging using TSE-sequence

Autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for end-stage renal disease patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis as a replacement therapy. As the duration of dialysis increases, the risk of vascular access-related complications such as AVF stenosis, thrombosis, vascular calcification (VC), and aneurysm formation gradually rises. Among these, VC has been proven to be independently associated with the occurrence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). VC in the AVF of dialysis patients can lead to AVF failure, severe

Aorto-esophageal fistula (AEF) is a condition with an extremely high mortality rate that often causes massive gastrointestinal bleeding, commonly resulting from esophageal perforation due to foreign bodies or aortic aneurysmal malformations. This case report introduces an elderly male patient who experienced hematemesis for longer than 16 h without obvious cause. The patient did not receive relief from endoscopic compression hemostasis. Through computed tomography angiography (CTA), a tortuous and thickened vessel was found in the descending aorta of the patient, which entered the esophagus. T

BACKGROUND: Vascular surgery of the inguinal area can be complicated by persistent lymphatic fistulas. Rapid and effective treatment is essential to prevent infection, sepsis, bleeding, and possible leg amputation. Current data on irradiation of lymphatic fistulas lack recommendation on the appropriate individual and total dose, the time of irradiation, and the target volume. Presumably, a dose of 0.3-0.5 to 1-12 Gy should be sufficient for the purpose. Currently, radiotherapy is a "can" recommendation, with a level 4 low evidence and a grade C recommendation, according to the DEGRO S2 guideli

PURPOSE: The Department of Health estimates that currently in the UK, 61.3% of the population are overweight or obese (BMI >25 kg/m2). Fistulae in the obese often fail to mature or prove inadequate to needle due to excessive depth (>6 mm). This study is a summary of our experience with brachio and radio-cephalic vein superficialisation in the obese.
METHODS: From May 2008 to October 2012, 22 patients underwent superficialisation of the cephalic vein following radio-cephalic or brachio-cephalic Arterio-venous fistula (AVF) creation. Data were obtained from a prospective database (Cyberen®) and

We report our initial experience in using the Amplatzer vascular plug for closure of coronary arterial fistulas. The self-expanding, cylindrical, device is made from Nitinol wire mesh, and is available from 4 to 16 millimetres in diameter. We have now used the device to close fistulas in 3 patients, aged from 3 to 14 years, who presented with ratios of pulmonary-to-systemic flow from 1.5 to 3. In 2 patients, fistulas arising from the proximal right and left coronary arteries, with maximal diameters of 9 and 10 millimetres, respectively, had their narrowest diameter, of 6 millimetres, proximal

Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas, or malformations, are abnormal vascular connections between a pulmonary artery and a pulmonary vein. Clinical presentation may vary from asymptomatic patients to others showing a variety of symptoms such as cyanosis, dyspnea, high output heart failure, hemoptysis and paradoxical embolization. Initially, surgical treatment was the single method of therapy until several percutaneous embolization techniques using coils, coil bags, detachable balloons and devices were established. In this report, we describe a child in whom the new Amplatzer Vascular Plug device w

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of power Doppler sonography (US) in depicting internal fistulae and their vascularity, and to study the characteristics of blood flow within the fistula wall.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study involved 45 consecutive patients with Crohn's disease and suspected internal fistulae detected by grey scale US. The fistulae were subsequently evaluated using power Doppler US to reveal any areas of increased vascularity, and the results were compared with radiographic, endoscopic, or intraoperative findings. Whenever feasible, we also performed spectral analysis of blood fl

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal degeneration of autogenous arteriovenous fistulas represents an increasingly prevalent complication in long-term dialysis patients, often leading to access failure and significant morbidity. Despite the clinical relevance, consensus on optimal surgical management remains limited.
METHODS: We present a 10-year single-center experience with a modified stapling technique for AVF aneurysmoplasty, aimed at preserving native access while enabling immediate post-operative cannulation. This retrospective analysis includes 184 patients undergoing reconstruction for AVF aneurys

Haemodialysis (HD) is often required for patients with end-stage renal disease. Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), a surgical procedure connecting an artery to a vein, are the preferred vascular access for HD due to their durability and lower complication rates. The aim of AVFs is to promote vein remodelling to accommodate increased blood flow needed for dialysis. However, many AVFs fail to mature properly, making them unsuitable for dialysis. Successful maturation requires remodelling, resulting in an increased luminal diameter and thickened walls to support the increased blood flow. After AVF cr

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is a rare disorder that is characterized by vascular lesions mainly caused by vascular fragility, such as spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula (sCCF). We experienced a patient who presented with sCCF but suffered postoperative multiple vascular arteriopathy complications caused by undiagnosed vEDS. A 39-year-old woman who had no physical and medical characteristics indicating vEDS was referred to our hospital due to sudden onset of headache and pulsatile tinnitus. Digital subtraction angiography revealed direct sCCF of the left internal carotid artery. I

INTRODUCTION: Esophago-vascular fistulae in children are almost uniformly fatal with death occurring by exsanguination. We present a single centre series of five surviving patients, a proposal for management and literature review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were identified from surgical logbooks, surgeon recollection and discharge coding data. Demographics, symptoms, co-morbidities, radiology, management and follow up details were recorded.
RESULTS: Five patients (1M, 4F) were identified. Four were aorto-esophageal and one caroto-esophageal. Median age at initial presentation was 44 (8-

OBJECTIVE: To determine if duplex ultrasound (US) for arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) can predict vascular events (VEs; thrombosis and stenosis).
METHODS: Duplex US was performed for vascular access evaluation in 2557 maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients between October 1, 2013 and March 31, 2016. Of these patients, 2184 patients were finally included in this study. AVF dysfunction was assessed using the brachial artery blood flow volume (Qa; mL/min), arterial blood flow resistance index (RI), and residual diameter of the fistula vein (RD; mm). Proximal, midpoint, and distal aspects of the fi

UNLABELLED: Autologous access is the best vascular access for dialysis also in older patients and it should be mature when patient needs hemodialysis. It is not always possible. Surgeon availability and demographic characteristics of patients (age, diabetes, vascular disease...) are factors that determine primary vascular access.
AIM: To analyse outcome and vascular access complications in elderly who start hemodialysis without vascular access.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients older than 75 years who initiated hemodialysis without vascular access between January 2000 and June 2002 were inc

In this paper the methods with synthetic vascular prosthesis used in surgical treatment of the secondary aorto-intestinal fistula are presented. 10 cases of 22 patients treated in the years 1993-2003 for secondary aorto-intestinal fistulas as a complication of vascular prosthesis infection are analysed. In all patients the abdominal CT, scintigraphy with technetium 99m labeled leucocytes and endoscopy were performed. The patients underwent the operation of infected dacron prosthesis' replacement with silver/collagen coated prosthesis or extraanatomic bypass (subclavian to femoral). To close th

Congenital coronary artery fistula (CAF) is a rare anomaly, accounting for approximately 0.4% of congenital heart defects. It is characterized by an abnormal connection between a coronary artery and one of the cardiac chambers or great vessels. Depending on the degree of shunting and coronary steal, it can lead to severe congestive heart failure, even in the neonatal or early infantile period, sometimes requiring early intervention. We report a neonatal case of heart failure caused by a giant right CAF that was successfully treated with transcatheter closure using an Amplatzer™ Vascular Plug I

INTRODUCTION: Autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for hemodialysis. Small-caliber vessels (arterial diameter <1.5 mm or venous diameter <2.0 mm), are known risk factors for AVF maturation failure. This study investigated the minimum vessel threshold suitable for AVF creation and evaluated its long-term effectiveness.
METHODS: This multi-center prospective study included 140 patients with end-stage kidney disease aged ⩾18 years with ejection fraction ⩾30% (mean age 54.64 ± 13.79 years; 66.4% male). Patients were divided into small-caliber (n = 72) or normal
