Prediction of in-use emissions of heavy-duty diesel vehicles from engine testing.

A model of a heavy-duty vehicle driveline with automatic transmission has been developed for estimating engine speed and load from vehicle speed. The model has been validated using emissions tests conducted on three diesel vehicles on a chassis dynamometer and then on the engines removed from the vehicles tested on an engine dynamometer. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were proportional to work done by the engine. For two of the engines, the NOx/horsepower(HP) ratio was the same on the engine and on the chassis dynamometer tests. For the third engine NOx/HP was significantly higher from the cha

Characteristics of on-road NOx emissions from Euro 6 light-duty diesel vehicles using a portable emissions measurement system.

This paper presents the on-road nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions measurements from Euro 6 light-duty diesel vehicles using a portable emissions measurement system on the predesigned test routes in the metropolitan area of Seoul, Korea. Six diesel vehicles were tested and the NOx emissions results were analyzed according to the driving routes, driving conditions, data analysis methods, and ambient temperatures. Total NOx emissions for route 1, which has higher driving severity than route 2, differed by -4-60% from those for route 2. The NOx emissions when the air conditioner (AC) was used were h

Impact of driving characteristic parameters and vehicle type on fuel consumption and emissions performance over real driving cycles.

With the growing need for sustainable transportation solutions, understanding the relationship between driving characteristic parameters, vehicle type, and their impact on emissions and fuel consumption over real driving scenarios is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, four conventional vehicles and one hybrid vehicle with different technologies were compared in four distinct routes in Tehran city. Nineteen real driving cycles were generated using widely employed K-means and PCA algorithms. The vehicles were simulated on MATLAB/Simulink according to their specifications. Twelve dri

Quantifying the Impact of Alternative Bus Stop Platforms on Vehicle Emissions and Individual Pollution Exposure at Bus Stops.

Due to stop-and-go events, bus stops are often treated as "hot spots" for air pollution. The design of bus stops should be optimized to reduce emissions and exposure for transit commuters. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of bus stop platform types on vehicle emissions and individual pollution exposure. Second-by-second emissions data were first collected from one bus using a portable emission measurement system (PEMS). Microscopic traffic simulation was then used to estimate overall traffic emissions under six scenarios with different bus stop settings. Numerical simulati

Effects of Vehicle Load on Emissions of Heavy-Duty Diesel Trucks: A Study Based on Real-World Data.

Vehicle loads have significant impacts on the emissions of heavy-duty trucks, even in the same traffic conditions. Few studies exist covering the differences in emissions of diesel semi-trailer towing trucks (DSTTTs) with different loads, although these vehicles have a wide load range. In this context, the operating modes and emission rates of DSTTTs were analyzed under varying loads scenarios to understand the effect of vehicle loads on emission factors. First, second-by-second field speed data and emission data of DSTTTs with different loads were collected. Then, the methods for calculating

On-board monitoring (OBM) for heavy-duty vehicle emissions in China: Regulations, early-stage evaluation and policy recommendations.

The latest China VI emission standard has introduced a remote monitoring rule for regulating in-use emissions of heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs). Real-time data regarding engine and aftertreatment operating conditions and tailpipe nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentrations are required to be collected through electronic control unit and on-board NOx sensors by vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and then transmitted to environmental authorities. Beijing has developed a local standard that requires OEMs to design China VI-like on-board monitoring (OBM) systems for new China V HDDVs si

On-road detection of trucks with high NOx emissions from a patrol vehicle with on-board FTIR analyzer.

Technological advances in heavy-duty vehicle engines, allowing them to reach NOx emissions comparable to European diesel passenger cars per km driven, are being compromised by aftermarket defeat devices such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emulators, many of which can be quickly deactivated by the driver. In a pilot study, the prevalence of trucks with excess NOx emissions on Czech motorways was evaluated using an ordinary Customs Administration patrol vehicle temporarily fitted with a portable fast-response Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) analyzer, acting as an impromptu chase vehic

The next challenge in emissions control for heavy-duty diesel vehicles: From NOx to N2O.

Vehicle emissions are a major source of greenhouse gases globally. Dual selective catalytic reduction (SCR), an advanced version of single SCR, is crucial under stricter nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission standards for heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs). However, the emission characteristics of nitrous oxide (N2O), a byproduct of SCR and a potent greenhouse gas, remain unclear. This study investigates the N2O emissions from HDDVs equipped with single or dual SCR systems using heavy-duty chassis dynamometers under various ambient temperatures, altitudes, and loading masses. The results showed that t

Challenges of the UK government and industries regarding emission control after ICE vehicle bans.

Over the last few decades, the annual air pollutants from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have dropped significantly, benefiting from the implementation of strict emission regulations and the development of vehicle technology. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions from transport sectors contributed more than 32% and 12% of annual total emissions. Although hazardous exhaust emissions from ICE vehicles will be reduced after the bans on ICE vehicle sales in 2030, sustainable technology development of ICE vehicles is still necessary to meet the future challenges. Geospatial Variation of Real-World Tailpipe Emission Rates for Light-Duty Gasoline Vehicles.

Spatial variability in real-world on-road tailpipe light-duty gasoline vehicle nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide emission rates, the locations of emissions hotspots, and factors that explain spatial variability are quantified. A sample of 205 vehicles were measured on four predefined round-trip study routes using Portable Emission Measurement Systems. The trips on each route were divided into segments, averaging 1/4 mile in length. Segment-average emission rates were estimated based on measured 1 Hz emission rates. Emission hotspots are defined as segments with

[Study of on-board emission measurement for heavy-duty diesel vehicle and its impact with load].

Real world vehicle emission tests were conducted on two heavy-duty diesel trucks on un-loaded and loaded condition by using a portable emission measurement system. By analysis, the results indicate high fuel consumption and emission rates are concentrated on the high speed and acceleration areas of the speed-acceleration emission maps and the areas are much wider on loaded condition. The impact of load on fuel use and emissions will be highest while the vehicle is cruising or accelerating on (30 +/- 2.5) km x h(-1), which are 1.6 - 3.2 times of those on un-loaded condition. Synthetically, the

Real-world particulate matter and gaseous emissions from motor vehicles in a highway tunnel.

Recent studies have linked atmospheric particulate matter with human health problems. In many urban areas, mobile sources are a major source of particulate matter (PM) and the dominant source of fine particles or PM2.5 (PM smaller than 2.5 pm in aerodynamic diameter). Dynamometer studies have implicated diesel engines as being a significant source of ultrafine particles (< 0.1 microm), which may also exhibit deleterious health impacts. In addition to direct tailpipe emissions, mobile sources contribute to ambient particulate levels by brake and tire wear and by resuspension of particles from p

Shared bikes distribution vehicle routing problem with split delivery considering carbon emission.

The distribution of shared bikes is different from that of other goods. There are some demand stations which need a large number of shared bikes, such as bus stations, subway exits and business districts. The demand of these stations cannot be met in a single delivery, so the demand can be split into batches for distribution. Therefore, shared bikes need to be delivered from distribution centers to demand stations. However, these delivery vehicles generate carbon emissions during the process, which has an impact on environment. Thus, shared bikes distribution vehicle route selection with consi

Evaluation of real-world CO2 and NOX emissions of various in-use heavy-duty vehicles.

As a major emission source in road transportation, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) exacerbate climate change, while nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions pose serious health risks to human health. Therefore, it is critical to investigate in-depth their emission characteristics and evaluate the real-world emission levels of in-use HDVs, as they are an important source of mobile source emission. In this study, eleven in-use HDVs were tested using a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). The results indicated that the CO2 and NOX emissions were significantly influenc

Regulated and unregulated emissions from Euro VI Diesel and CNG heavy-duty vehicles.

This study compares emissions from Euro VI-D Diesel and CNG buses across temperatures from -7 °C to 35 °C. Pollutants including NOx, THC, CH4, CO, NH3, N2O, HCHO, Solid Particle Number larger than 23 nm (SPN23) and larger than 10 nm (SPN10) were measured. Both buses complied with Euro VI-D but exceeded European Commission's proposed Euro 7 limits, notably for NOx and SPN10. The CNG bus also surpassed NH3, CO, and CH4 limits, while the Diesel exceeded N2O limits. High NH3 emissions were observed from CNG (up to 0.320 g/kWh), with Diesel reporting lower levels (up to 0.021 g/kWh). HCHO emission
