Meniere's disease (MD) represents one of the vertigo disorders characterized by triad symptoms (recurrent vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus or ear fullness). The diagnosis of MD relies on the accurate and detailed taking of medical history, and the differentiation between MD and vestibular migraine (VM) is of critical importance from the perspective of the treatment efficacy. VM is a highly prevalent vertigo condition and its typical symptoms (headache, vestibular symptoms, cochlear symptoms) mimic those of MD. Furthermore, the misdiagnosis in MD and VM could lead to VM patients mist

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate complaints in people with Ménière's disease (MD) with and without migraine and headache to study the association between MD and Vestibular Migraine (VM). We believe this will help us understand if these two disorders represent a disease continuum in that they may share a common aetiology.
METHODS: The study used a retrospective design and included data of 911 patients with MD from the Finnish Ménière Federation database. The study participants had a mean age of 60.2 years, mean duration of disease of 12.6 years, and 78.7% of the particip

Sudden-onset vestibular dysfunction in the canine is a commonly seen condition in veterinary practice, with some veterinarians reporting several cases each month. However, traditional veterinary medicine has little to offer these patients other than symptomatic relief for the severe nausea that accompanies the vertigo and supportive advice for the owners. Owners of affected dogs are informed that these symptoms usually resolve within a few days. As physical therapists, we often see cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in our human practice clinics, and effective protocols for diagnosi

This article proposes a broadened definition of vestibular rehabilitation to include patients with active, fluctuating Meniere's disease. Pedagogy in the program shifts from amelioration of symptoms by vestibular adaptation or habituation to education, prevention, and self-empowerment. Recommendations are given for patient education, prevention, and examination.

A review of the literature on selective vestibular neurectomy for Meniere's disease is presented. The procedure is placed in historical context and current refinements of the technique are highlighted. In particular, the different methods of evaluating results on vertigo, hearing, tinnitus, aural pressure and imbalance are summarised. The controversy over the indication, timing and outcome measures for selective vestibular neurectomy is discussed. In experienced hands there appears to be a low complication rate, emphasising the value of this procedure in relieving intractable vertigo when a de

The coexistence of otosclerosis and endolymphatic hydrops in the temporal bone have been described; however, the mechanism for the development of endolymphatic hydrops in otosclerosis remains unknown. Among 128 temporal bones with otosclerosis, involvement of the vestibular aqueduct by otosclerosis was observed in four temporal bones from two patients. In all four, the vestibular aqueduct was filled with active otosclerotic foci; the lumen of the endolymphatic duct and sac was narrowed as a result of fibrosis, and endolymphatic hydrops, more severe in the pars inferior than the pars superior,

The vestibular labyrinth of eight patients with Menière's disease obtained by translabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy or transtympanal labyrinthectomy was studied with the light microscope and transmission electron microscope. Previous invasive therapy was transtympanal application of gentamicin in one patient and endolymphatic sac surgery in two patients. Some of the pathological findings were unspecific, e.g. mucoid degeneration of the subepithelial spaces, fibrous long spacing collagen and high amount of lipofuscin in different cell types. Cuticular laminated structures were seen in some of

Despite the huge progress in the definition and classification of vestibular disorders within the last decade, there are still patients whose recurrent vestibular symptoms cannot be attributed to any of the recognized episodic vestibular syndromes, such as Menière's disease (MD), vestibular migraine (VM), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular paroxysmia, orthostatic vertigo or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The aim of the present international, multi-center, cross-sectional study was to systematically characterize the clinical picture of recurrent vestibular symptoms not ot

OBJECTIVE: Intravenous gadolinium-enhanced inner ear magnetic resonance imaging (IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MRI) is a new technique for diagnosing Meniere's disease (MD). Vestibular tests have also long been used for MD, but which tests should be included in the oto-neurological test battery remains controversial. The evaluation method to be used to confirm the clinical diagnosis in MD is not clear. This study aimed to examine the results of vestibular tests and IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MRI in individuals diagnosed with unilateral definite Meniere's disease.
METHODS: IV Gd-enhanced inner ear MR
