Effects of primary Sjögren's syndrome on hearing and vestibular systems.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate primary Sjögren's syndrome patients in terms of hearing and vestibular functions. METHODS: The patient group consisted of 35 individuals diagnosed with primary Sjögren's syndrome and a control group of 35 healthy individuals similar in terms of age and gender. RESULTS: The rate of hearing loss in the patient group was significantly higher than in the control group (p = 0.021). The N1 latency value for the ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials test was significantly longer in the patient group than in the control group (p = 0.037). Additionally,

Effects of noise on the vestibular system of normal-hearing workers.

BACKGROUND: Studies in noise-exposed animals have shown changes in vestibular structures. Likewise, studies in humans have been suggesting that noise can damage the vestibular system, even with normal assessment results. OBJECTIVE: To assess the vestibular system of workers exposed to noise and to compare with individuals not exposed. METHODS: Twenty normal-hearing male adults were divided in the study group (SG), exposed to occupational noise, and control group (CG). We conducted the following procedures: medical history, Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Dix-Hallpike maneuver, and electr

A comprehensive review of the effects of caffeine on the auditory and vestibular systems.

Coffee, of which caffeine is a critical component, is probably the most frequently used psychoactive stimulant in the world. The effects of caffeine on the auditory and vestibular system have been investigated under normal and pathological conditions, such as acoustic trauma, ototoxicity, auditory neuropathy, and vestibular disorders, using various tests. Lower incidences of hearing loss and tinnitus have been reported in coffee consumers. The stimulatory effect of caffeine is represented by either a shorter latency or enhanced amplitude in electrophysiological tests of the auditory system. Fu

Effects of high intensity noise on the vestibular system in rats.

Some individuals with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) also report balance problems. These accompanying vestibular complaints are not well understood. The present study used a rat model to examine the effects of noise exposure on the vestibular system. Rats were exposed to continuous broadband white noise (0-24 kHz) at an intensity of 116 dB sound pressure level (SPL) via insert ear phones in one ear for three hours under isoflurane anesthesia. Seven days after the exposure, a significant increase in ABR threshold (43.3 ± 1.9 dB) was observed in the noise-exposed ears, indicating hearing loss

Hearing and vestibular disorders in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVES: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with several comorbidities, including hearing and vestibular disorders. We recently described an increase of SLE prevalence in patients with Menierés disease (MD). The aim of this study is to explore if a subset of SLE patients may have a common inner ear disorder and determine the potential relationship with migraine. METHODS; Eighty-nine patients with SLE (according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria for the diagnosis of SLE) were evaluated for audiovestibular symptoms by a telephone interview carried out by two exper

Dizziness in the elderly and age-related degeneration of the vestibular system.

The peripheral and central vestibular systems exhibit an age-related structural deterioration which may be responsible for vestibular reflex deficits and dizziness in the elderly. However, it seems likely that the central nervous system is capable of compensating for a certain degree of decline in function, since not all elderly people are impaired to the extent that the clinical signs of vestibular dysfunction are apparent. Dizziness and other vestibular disorders may develop only when the degree of deterioration of the vestibular system exceeds the ability of the nervous system to compensate

Surgical ablation of the vestibular system in the treatment of Meniere's disease.

When Meniere's disease becomes refractory to medical management, a variety of highly effective surgical options are available. A selective nerve section can relieve the disabling vertigo of Meniere's disease while preserving hearing. When the hearing on the involved side is nonserviceable, a labyrinthectomy is an important alternative. An eighth nerve section makes a complete preganglionic ablation possible with the additional benefit of relieving tinnitus in over two thirds of selected patients.

Curare and the efferent vestibular system. An electrophysiological study in the frog.

In the frog we have studied the action of d-tubocurarine on the spontaneous discharge recorded from the whole horizontal semicircular canal (HC) nerve and from single HC afferent fibres. Gross activity was recorded in isolated head preparations. In each case, the spontaneous frequency was measured 6 min before and 16 min after a drop of D-tubocurarine (0.1 microliter, 5.10(-6)M) dissolved in Ringer or after a similar drop of Ringer was injected into the perilymph near the HC ampulla. Curare elicited a significant increase of the discharge frequency in about 60% of the preparations and a decrea

Tumors of the nervous system and hearing loss: Beyond vestibular schwannomas.

Hearing loss is a common side effect of many tumor treatments. However, hearing loss can also occur as a direct result of certain tumors of the nervous system, the most common of which are the vestibular schwannomas (VS). These tumors arise from Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve and their main cause is the loss of function of NF2, with 95 % of cases being sporadic and 5 % being part of the rare neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related Schwannomatosis. Genetic variations in NF2 do not fully explain the clinical heterogeneity of VS, and interactions between Schwann cells and their micro

Neural correlates of hemispheric dominance and ipsilaterality within the vestibular system.

Earlier functional imaging studies on the processing of vestibular information mainly focused on cortical activations due to stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canals in right-handers. Two factors were found to determine its processing in the temporo-parietal cortex: a dominance of the non-dominant hemisphere and an ipsilaterality of the neural pathways. In an investigation of the role of these factors in the vestibular otoliths, we used vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in a fMRI study of monaural saccular-otolith stimulation. Our aim was to (1) analyze the hemispheric dom

Neural variability, detection thresholds, and information transmission in the vestibular system.

A fundamental issue in neural coding is the role of spike timing variation in information transmission of sensory stimuli. Vestibular afferents are particularly well suited to study this issue because they are classified as either regular or irregular based on resting discharge variability as well as morphology. Here, we compared the responses of each afferent class to sinusoidal and random head rotations using both information theoretic and gain measures. Information theoretic measures demonstrated that regular afferents transmitted, on average, two times more information than irregular affer

Closing an open-loop control system: vestibular substitution through the tongue.

The human postural coordination mechanism is an example of a complex closed-loop control system based on multisensory integration [9,10,13,14]. In models of this process, sensory data from vestibular, visual, tactile and proprioceptive systems are integrated as linearly additive inputs that drive multiple sensory-motor loops to provide effective coordination of body movement, posture and alignment [5-8, 10, 11]. In the absence of normal vestibular (such as from a toxic drug reaction) and other inputs, unstable posture occurs. This instability may be the result of noise in a functionally open-l

Temporal bone studies of the human peripheral vestibular system. Aminoglycoside ototoxicity.

Quantitative assessments of vestibular hair cells and Scarpa's ganglion cells were performed on 17 temporal bones from 10 individuals who had well-documented clinical evidence of aminoglycoside ototoxicity (streptomycin, kanamycin, and neomycin). Assessment of vestibular hair cells was performed by Nomarski (differential interference contrast) microscopy. Hair cell counts were expressed as densities (number of cells per 0.01 mm2 surface area of the sensory epithelium). The results were compared with age-matched normal data. Streptomycin caused a significant loss of both type I and type II hair

The Vestibular System: A Newly Identified Regulator of Bone Homeostasis Acting Through the Sympathetic Nervous System.

The vestibular system is a small bilateral structure located in the inner ear, known as the organ of balance and spatial orientation. It senses head orientation and motion, as well as body motion in the three dimensions of our environment. It is also involved in non-motor functions such as postural control of blood pressure. These regulations are mediated via anatomical projections from vestibular nuclei to brainstem autonomic centers and are involved in the maintenance of cardiovascular function via sympathetic nerves. Age-associated dysfunction of the vestibular organ contributes to an incre
