OBJECTIVE: To compare characteristics of calls to the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) by caller gender and identify potentially unique needs of women callers.
METHOD: Retrospective review of clinical data collected during VCL calls, comparing call characteristics between women and men veteran callers.
RESULTS: The data included 116,029 calls by women veterans and 651,239 calls by men veterans between January 1, 2018-December 31, 2019. Timing (hour/day/season) of VCL calls was similar between women and men callers. We observed gender differences in reason for call, with the most salient difference

OBJECTIVES: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is thought to complicate pain management outcomes, which is consistent with the impact of other psychosocial factors in the biopsychosocial model of pain. This study aimed to identify patient sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with PTSD prevalence among veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) who received Veterans Affairs (VA) chiropractic care.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of electronic health record data from a national cohort study of OEF/OIF/OND veterans with at least 1 visi

IMPORTANCE: Veterans are at high risk for developing sensorineural hearing loss leading to cochlear implant (CI) candidacy; however, the ability to care for these patients is limited by the number and location of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities that provide specialized CI services.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate geographic disparities in access to CI care within the VHA system for US veterans.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: An analysis of census tract-level data including US veterans was conducted using the nationwide American Community Survey data collected by the US Census B

BACKGROUND: Although many studies evaluate factors influencing contraceptive use, little is known about barriers and facilitators that may be specific to or prevalent among women veterans using the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (VA).
DESIGN: Semistructured telephone interviews with a national sample of 189 women veterans at risk for unintended pregnancy who receive care in the VA were used to explore barriers and facilitators to contraceptive use as well as elicit suggestions for improving VA contraceptive care. The sample consisted primarily of women with risk factors for adverse reprod

BACKGROUND: A growing number of reproductive-age women veterans are returning from Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). In 2010, 42% of women veterans receiving Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services were aged 18 to 45. Prescription opioid use has increased among all veterans over the past decade; however, exposure among pregnant veterans has not been examined.
METHODS: We identified 2,331 women who delivered babies within the VHA system between 2001 and 2010. Delivery, opioid prescribing history, and demographic and health-related variables were obta

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of military sexual trauma (MST) among US veterans, identify sociodemographic and military characteristics of MST, and examine the relationships between MST and psychiatric comorbidities, functioning/quality of life, and mental health treatment utilization.
METHOD: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a contemporary, nationally representative survey of 1,484 US veterans conducted September-October 2013. Poststratification weights were applied to analyses to permit generalizability of results to the US veteran popula

OBJECTIVES: We estimated the prevalence and incidence of gender identity disorder (GID) diagnoses among veterans in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) health care system and examined suicide risk among veterans with a GID diagnosis.
METHODS: We examined VHA electronic medical records from 2000 through 2011 for 2 official ICD-9 diagnosis codes that indicate transgender status. We generated annual period prevalence estimates and calculated incidence using the prevalence of GID at 2000 as the baseline year. We cross-referenced GID cases with available data (2009-2011) of suicide-related ev

OBJECTIVE: Few data exist exploring the relationship between sleep apnea (SA), insomnia, comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) and mortality among race-ethnic minoritized (REM) US veterans. This study compares all-cause mortality among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients diagnosed with these sleep disorders by race-ethnicity.
METHODS: The study included veterans with confirmed diagnoses and prescribed treatment for insomnia and/or SA, within the VHA, from 1999 to 2023. Using self-reported data, eight race-ethnicity groups were generated (i.e., Non-Hispanic White [NH-W], Non-His

Case Presentation: A 65-year-old male veteran presented to the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) emergency department with progressive fatigue, dyspnea on exertion, lightheadedness, and falls over the last month. New bilateral lower extremity numbness up to his knees developed in the week prior to admission and prompted him to seek care. Additional history included 2 episodes of transient loss of consciousness resulting in falls and a week of diarrhea, which had resolved. His medical history was notable for hypothyroidism secondary to Hashimoto thyroiditis, seizure disorder, vi

This commentary attempts to frame the article, "Safer Housing for Homeless Women Veterans," in a wider context. It defines female veterans, homelessness, and military sexual trauma. This commentary also tackles a question that often confuses civilian providers regarding who has access to care at the Veterans Health Administration. It does not repeat in detail all of the recommendations in the article, but it advocates their broader use in shelters and transitional housing. Finally, I close with some thoughts about a new generation of young, homeless, female veterans who may have children and h

INTRODUCTION: Goals of care discussions (GCDs) are recommended for patients with cirrhosis but rarely conducted. Since 2017, the Veterans Health Administration has provided a standardized note template that clinicians can use to document GCDs for Veterans with serious illness. We aimed to quantify the frequency and timing of GCDs in this population, along with the factors associated with GCDs and their content.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified Veterans with cirrhosis from January 2017 to July 2022 and captured GCDs until July 2023. We assessed the association between demogr

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: With an epidemic of drug overdoses, contemporary research is needed to examine drug overdose deaths among homeless populations. This study measured rates, types and correlates of drug overdose deaths occurring over a 5-year study period among veterans experiencing homelessness (VEH) and non-homeless veterans (NHV) in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: USA.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 6 128 921 veterans. We followed 399 125 VEH and 5 729 796 NHV between 2017 and 2021 using linked administrative VA and N

BACKGROUND: Women with lower extremity amputations (LEAs) tend to have poorer prosthesis-related outcomes than men, although the literature is sparse. To our knowledge, there are no prior studies examining prosthesis-related outcomes of women veterans with LEAs.
OBJECTIVE: To examine gender differences (overall and by type of amputation) among veterans who underwent LEAs between 2005 and 2018, received care at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) prior to undergoing amputation, and were prescribed a prosthesis. It was hypothesized that compared to men, women would report lower satisfactio

Despite increasing recognition that positive psychological changes or posttraumatic growth (PTG) may develop after highly stressful or traumatic events, contemporary population-based data on the epidemiology of PTG in high-risk samples such as U.S. military veterans are lacking. Additionally, in light of emerging evidence suggesting an 8-factor model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, an up-to-date characterization of how these symptom clusters relate to PTG can help inform efforts to help promote PTG. Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veter

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive drinking is an increasing concern among military policy makers and healthcare providers. The goal of this study was to assess how social and psychological factors relate to alcohol problems among post-deployed US veterans and how problematic drinking is associated with well-being.
METHODS: Data were collected via a telephone survey from a random sample of veterans receiving their healthcare from a large non-VA hospital system in central Pennsylvania (N = 1730). Interviewers inquired about participants' current alcohol consumption, using the CAGE and AUDIT-C scales, and

OBJECTIVES: There are currently no reliable estimates of the prevalence of gastrointestinal disease in the US Military Veterans. Hence, the study aims to determine its prevalence in military Veterans in the United States.
METHODS: This study utilized a retrospective, correlational design using a patient record database from the Department of Veteran's Affairs. The participants in the study were Veterans diagnosed with gastrointestinal disease. Specific gastrointestinal diseases include more than 500,000 ambulatory care visits annually in the United States, which included peptic ulcer disease,

Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) have expanded dramatically despite their limited empirical base. This pilot study examined MISSION-Criminal Justice (CJ), a co-occurring disorders wraparound intervention, delivered alongside two VTCs. Baseline data from 26 male veterans enrolled in two VTCs and MISSION-CJ, and 6-month follow-up data for 18 of the 26 veterans, are presented. Veterans on average were 37.5 years old, 85% Caucasian, had significant histories of criminal justice involvement (14.3 lifetime arrests), had an average of 14.7 years of alcohol use and 9.3 years of illicit drug use, and r

Formerly incarcerated military veterans-comprising approximately 8% of the prison population-experience significant barriers to reentry including homelessness, mental illness, and mortality. One of the most consequential barriers is relapsing into substance use. Most justice-involved veterans (JIV) possess histories of substance abuse before imprisonment, and this rate continues upon release. Mental illness-depression in particular-is often comorbid with substance abuse. With high rates of depression and substance use in a JIV population, it is important to determine to what extent release fro

OBJECTIVE: Many homeless and unstably housed (HUH) adults have severe mental illnesses that are managed with antipsychotic medications. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest provider of homeless services, but there has been little study of psychotropic medication prescriptions for HUH veterans.
METHODS: Using national VA administrative data in 2017, rates and characteristics associated with prescriptions for antipsychotic medications for veterans using VA health care services (N = 2,882,993), including HUH veterans (n = 266,855), were analyzed.
RESULTS: Among HUH veterans
