Impact of Community-Onset Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus on Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia in a Central Korea Veterans Health Service Hospital.

BACKGROUND: No study has examined the epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia in Korean veterans' hospitals. We investigated the microbiological and clinical epidemiology of S. aureus bacteremia at the central Veterans Health Services (VHS) hospital in Korea. METHODS: Patients with S. aureus bacteremia were consecutively enrolled from February to August 2015. Bacteremia was classified as hospital-acquired (HA), community-onset healthcare-associated (COHA), or community-acquired (CA). MRSA bacteremia risk factors were analyzed. Species identification, anti

Trauma exposure, branch of service, and physical injury in relation to mental health among U.S. veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Significant mental health symptoms are reported in troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan (OEF/OIF). Symptomatic troops are more likely to be discharged and become eligible for Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) care. Prevalence and predictors of mental health symptoms were assessed in 339 OEF/OIF veterans and reservists registering at the San Diego DVA. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing combat exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom frequency and severity, depression, and substance and alcohol abuse. A minority of participants (36%) did not screen p

Attitudes about the VA health-care setting, mental illness, and mental health treatment and their relationship with VA mental health service use among female and male OEF/OIF veterans.

In the present study, the authors explored gender differences in attitudinal barriers to and facilitators of care for Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans and examined the relationship of those factors with VA mental health service use among female and male veterans with probable mental health conditions. Data were collected as part of a national cross-sectional survey of OEF/OIF veterans; the current sample was limited to participants with a probable diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, or alcohol abuse (N = 278). Although negligible gender

Association between Services to Address Adverse Social Determinants of Health and Suicide Mortality among Veterans with Indicators of Housing Instability, Unemployment, and Justice Involvement.

Suicide among Veterans continues to be a priority issue addressed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In addition to a variety of services specifically intended to prevent suicide, VA also offers a number of services to address Veterans' social determinants of health (SDH), several of which may be associated with elevated risk for suicide. For the present study, we assessed whether participation in services to address adverse SDH is associated with a reduction in risk of suicide mortality among Veterans using secondary data from VA datasets (1/1/2014-12/31/2019) for Veterans with

Temporal Trends in Incidence Rates of Lower Extremity Amputation and Associated Risk Factors Among Patients Using Veterans Health Administration Services From 2008 to 2018.

IMPORTANCE: Lower extremity amputation (LEA) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, national temporal trends of LEA incidence rates among US veterans and associated factors have not been well characterized. OBJECTIVE: To describe the temporal trends of LEA, characterize associated risk factors, and decompose the associations of these risk factors with changes in temporal trends of LEA among US veterans using Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) services between 2008 and 2018. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used VA data from 2008 to 2018 to estima

The Health and Well-Being of Service Members and Veterans Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings From the US Millennium Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Service members and veterans may have been particularly vulnerable to the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic because of the unique challenges tied to military service. Understanding the pandemic's impact on the health and well-being of these populations is critical for maintaining military readiness and preparing for future crises. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample included 80,974 US military personnel and veterans from the Millennium Cohort Study who completed the 2019-2021 survey. Participants who responded between October 23, 2019, and March 10, 2020, were classified as

BACKGROUND: The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-VA Supportive Housing (VASH) program-the VA's Housing First effort-is central to efforts to end Veteran homelessness. Yet, little is known about health care utilization patterns associated with achieving HUD-VASH housing. OBJECTIVES: We compare health service utilization at the VA Greater Los Angeles among: (1) formerly homeless Veterans housed through HUD-VASH (HUD-VASH Veterans); (2) currently homeless Veterans; (3) housed, low-income Veterans not in HUD-VASH; and (4) housed, not low-income Veterans. Foot health service provision by the Australian Department of Veterans' Affairs: do major podiatric medical interventions reduce the number of maintenance treatments?

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the Department of Veterans' Affairs provides podiatric medical services, including nail surgery and the provision of footwear and orthoses, for war veterans and their dependents. We sought to evaluate whether the provision of these interventions reduces the number of ongoing maintenance treatments. METHODS: We used the database of the Department of Veterans' Affairs to document the number of major podiatric medical interventions (footwear, foot orthoses, nail surgery, and combinations of these interventions) for 1996-1997. The number of maintenance podiatric medical

Changes in the health and broader well-being of U.S. veterans in the first three years after leaving military service: Overall trends and group differences.

OBJECTIVES: Scholars have theorized that the initial period after military discharge may be a particularly vulnerable time for veterans. Yet, several recent studies raise the prospect that risk for poor adjustment may actually increase rather than decrease over time. The current study examined whether the U.S. military veteran population experiences improvements or declines in their health and broader well-being during the first three years after leaving military service and documented differences based on gender, military rank, and warzone deployment history. METHODS: A population-based samp

Harmonization of social and physical health measures across prospective clinical studies of combat exposed service members and veterans: the total brain diagnostics program.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury is prevalent during military service and is associated with short- and long-term psychosocial and functional changes, though comprehensive longitudinal data on Veterans and active-duty service members (SMs) are lacking. To address this research gap, we utilized data from the Long-term Impact of Military-relevant Brain Injury Consortium (LIMBIC) and the Translational Research Center for TBI and Stress Disorders (TRACTS), two prospective longitudinal cohort studies of veterans and active duty SMs, each containing a wide range of symptom scales, objective asse

Adversity during military service: the impact of military sexual trauma, emotional bullying and physical assault on the mental health and well-being of women veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Despite making up about 11% of the UK military, there remains limited investigation on the impact of adversity women experience during their service in the UK military. Military adversity can result in a range of well-being difficulties that may persist following transition out of military. The present study therefore examined the prevalence and correlates of different types of military adversity (defined as sexual harassment, sexual assault, emotional bullying and physical assault) within a community sample of UK women veterans. METHODS: Participants were recruited from a UK ch

Associations Between Sociodemographic, Mental Health, and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Characteristics With Lifetime History of Criminal Justice Involvement in Combat Veterans and Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans and service members (V/SM) may have more risk factors for arrest and felony incarceration (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and at-risk substance use) but also more protective factors (e.g., access to health care) to mitigate behaviors that may lead to arrest. As such, understanding which factors are associated with criminal justice involvement among V/SM could inform prevention and treatment efforts. The current study examined relationships between lifetime history of arrests and felony incarceration and sociodemographic, psychological, and brain injury characteristi

Mental Health Service Use, Suicide Behavior, and Emergency Department Visits Among Rural US Veterans Who Received Video-Enabled Tablets During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

IMPORTANCE: Suicide rates are rising disproportionately in rural counties, a concerning pattern as the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified suicide risk factors in these regions and exacerbated barriers to mental health care access. Although telehealth has the potential to improve access to mental health care, telehealth's effectiveness for suicide-related outcomes remains relatively unknown.
