BACKGROUND: Reactions to animal biological fluids are poorly described in veterinary occupational health, despite exposures during obstetrical and surgical procedures. This study aimed to characterize the clinical features and risk determinants of reactions to mammalian amniotic fluid (AF) and blood in veterinarians.
METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to veterinarians practicing in France and Belgium. Data collected included demographics, allergic history, types of animal exposure, clinical features of reactions, time of onset of symptoms, use of protective equipment.
RESULTS: Among 31

Canine hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) are highly prevalent in pet dogs in the United States of America (U.S.). They pose a significant health risk to infected dogs and are also a potential risk to humans as zoonotic agents. Veterinarians play a crucial role in managing this threat through the diagnosis and treatment of infections in pet dogs. However, the rising incidence of anthelmintic resistance in U.S. hookworm populations necessitates increased awareness among veterinarians. To determine U.S. veterinarian's knowledge, perceptions and practices about canine hookworms, a cross-sectional on

This study assessed seroprevalence and risk factors for Leptospira (serovars Hardjo, Pomona, Ballum, Copenhageni, Tarassovi) exposure in New Zealand veterinarians. Veterinarians (n = 277) at one of two conferences were voluntarily enrolled and blood samples taken. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) titres ⩾48 were considered seropositive. Fourteen veterinarians (5·1%, 95% confidence interval 2·8-8·3) were seropositive to Leptospira. Home slaughter of cattle or pigs were significant risk factors for Leptospira exposure. There were no clear relationships between the animal species handled at w

Pets are not a major source of human infections but they can transmit certain diseases to man. This transmission usually is complex, requiring close contact with pets or their excretions and frequently involves a breach of sound hygienic practice. In some instances, pathogens of animal origin are acquired inadvertently because infectivity can persist after evidence of gross contamination has gone. Veterinarians participate in controlling zoonotic diseases by encouraging rabies vaccination and hygienic treatment of pet feces and urine, by supporting community efforts toward responsible pet owne

Anthelmintic resistance in livestock is a growing concern worldwide, with significant implications for animal health and agricultural productivity. This study explores the perceptions of veterinarians and farmers in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the factors contributing to anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus nematodes. Data were collected through structured questionnaires completed by 106 veterinarians and 188 farmers in 2022 and 2023. The analysis focused on self-reported therapeutic practices, farm management and environmental variables. Logistic regression, including Firth's

Humans and swine are both affected by influenza viruses, and swine are considered a potential source of new influenza viruses. Transmission of influenza viruses across species is well documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of different influenza virus subtypes in veterinarians working for the Mexican swine industry, using a hemagglutination inhibition test. All sera tested were collected in July 2011. The data were analysed using a generalized linear model and a linear model to study the possible association of seroprevalence with the age of the veterinarian, vacc

A case of Listeria monocytogenes skin infection in a man is presented. A 54-year-old male veterinary practitioner developed pustular changes on the skin of arms and hands after assisting with the delivery of a stillborn calf. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from the skin lesions on the arms and from the bovine placenta. Listeria monocytogenes isolates were serotyped and genotyped with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to confirm the suspected transmission of the pathogen from animal to human. All isolates were of serotype 4b with identical pulsotype. To the best of our knowledge, thi

We report the case of a 46-year-old veterinarian who developed rhinoconjunctivitis and contact urticaria (CU) on his hands and forearms after contact with dog's milk. Prick tests results revealed a positive reactions to Parietaria pollens, Dermatophagoides farinae and D.pteronyssinus, dander of cat, grass, olive (+++), and to undiluted dog's milk (++++). Control prick tests with dog's milk performed in 5 healthy veterinarians were negative. We consider it important to take into account the possibility that dog's milk may be the aetiological agent of CU in veterinarians.

A 14-page comprehensive survey was mailed to all 565 United States members of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians to identify the frequency of physical injuries, radiation exposures, chemical exposures, allergic or irritant reactions, infections, and use of preventive measures, and 315 (55.8%) veterinarians responded. Significant findings include major animal-related injury (61.5%), back injury (55%), necropsy injury (44.1%), adverse formalin exposure (40.2%), animal allergy (32.2%), zoonotic infection (30.2%), and insect allergy (14.2%). We also found that gender, length of experien

Responses (473) were collated from a questionnaire sent to 5054 veterinarians in Australia enquiring about drug preferences for treating cardiac disease in dogs and cats. When treating a small breed dog with endocardiosis and mild left congestive heart failure, 74% of 472 respondents used a diuretic, 67% a theophylline derivative, 27% a vasodilator and 20% a positive inotrope. Frusemide was the preferred diuretic and digoxin the preferred inotrope, but vasodilator use varied. Low sodium diets were "often recommended" by 71% of respondents. Propranolol was preferred to diltiazem for treating fe

Seventeen cases of cutaneous listeriosis in adults are reviewed. The condition appeared as papular or pustular lesions on the arms or hands, and was most often acquired as an occupational hazard from infected animals. The cases were all mild and were resolved successfully. However, listeric infections are potentially fatal, and as the initial cause of the lesion may be unknown, it is recommended that veterinarians and farmers should have suspect lesions examined microbiologically.

This study investigated equine nutrition knowledge and educational needs of licensed veterinarians in the United States who were exclusively or predominately equine practitioners. It found veterinarians regard their peers as an important resource of nutritional knowledge, ranking ahead of all other sources except a PhD equine nutritionist. Interestingly, only 21% of veterinarians felt good about their knowledge level in equine nutrition after graduating from veterinary school. Although veterinarians in this study reported equine nutrition to be an area of weakness, 75% had not pursued continui

OBJECTIVES: Up-to-date information on the current practices and attitudes of veterinarians in Australia to acute pain management in cats was sought in 2017-2018 in the first nationwide survey in over 20 years.
METHODS: An online survey was created, consisting of 54 questions in four sections, with 18 feline-specific questions. Veterinarians throughout Australia were invited to participate in the survey through advertisements in the veterinary press, electronic and regular mail, and through in-clinic visits and promotional materials.
RESULTS: A total of 614 veterinarians completed the survey,

Zoonotic diseases accounts for about 75% of emerging infectious disease and can be devastating to both human and animal health globally. A subset of zoonotic diseases is referred to as "neglected zoonotic diseases - NZDs" as they mainly affect poor populations who live in close proximity to domestic or wild animals often in areas where access to health and adequate sanitary facilities are not available. Furthermore, underestimation of the burden of NZD has continually led to its further neglect in least developed countries such as Nigeria. Controlling zoonotic infections including NZDs in anim

The risk of exposure to zoonotic factors among veterinarians comprises still underestimated problem. Many etiological factors of infectious diseases are so far poorly known, including the way of their transmission from environment to humans and their impact for health. The main aim of the study was to determine the risk of two selected zoonosis infections caused by Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. among occupational group of veterinarians in Poland. Two hundred ninety seven samples of stool were tested for the presence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts using Direct Fluore

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic emphasized a need to evaluate zoonotic transmission of influenza A in swine production. Airborne influenza A virus has been detected in swine facilities during an outbreak. However, the personal exposure of veterinarians treating infected swine has not been characterized. Two personal bioaerosol samplers, the NIOSH bioaerosol sampler and the personal high-flow inhalable sampler head (PHISH), were placed in the breathing zone of veterinarians treating swine infected with either H1N1 or H3N2 influenza A. A greater number of viral particles were recovered from the NIOSH bio
