In the aquaculture industry, the survival rate of fish and shrimp larvae is critical, as various Vibrio species can cause disease and mortality. Larvae are often fed on live feed, such as Artemia, which can provide nutrients and probiotics, but may also act as a carrier for pathogens. In this study, we assessed the anti-Vibrio efficacy of Pseudomonas juntendi MaLMAid0250, isolated from Artemia franciscana rearing water, against V. alginolyticus, V. anguillarum, V. harveyi, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. proteolyticus. The results showed that P. juntendi MaLMAid0250 belongs to the P. putida group

Many pathogenic bacteria form biofilms as a protective measure against environmental and host hazards. The underlying structure of the biofilm matrix consists of secreted macromolecules, often including exopolysaccharides. To escape the biofilm, bacteria may produce a number of matrix-degrading enzymes, including glycosidic enzymes that digest exopolysaccharide scaffolds. The human pathogen Vibrio cholerae assembles and secretes an exopolysaccharide called VPS (Vibrio polysaccharide) which is essential in most cases for the formation of biofilms and consists of a repeating tetrasaccharide unit

OBJECTIVE: Although the incidence in France of V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 infection in man has increased since 1996, it remains low (7 cases in 1999). After the death in 1994 of an immunodepressed patient presenting a skin lesion showing superinfection by a strain of non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae following exposure to seawater, we examined 22 samples of sea-water collected from 20 French coastal areas (Mediterranean coast).
METHODS: The sea-water samples were filtered and enriched with alkaline peptone water (APW), and the strains of Vibrio were isolated on TCBS, SS and BCP media and identifie

Vibrio metoecus is a recently described aquatic bacterium and opportunistic pathogen, closely related to and often coexisting with Vibrio cholerae. To study the relative abundance and population dynamics of both species in aquatic environments of cholera-endemic and cholera-free regions, we developed a multiplex qPCR assay allowing simultaneous quantification of total V. metoecus and V. cholerae (including toxigenic and O1 serogroup) cells. The presence of V. metoecus was restricted to samples from regions that are not endemic for cholera, where it was found at 20% of the abundance of V. chole

UNLABELLED: Vibrios are natural inhabitants of estuarine ecosystems and some species may pose public health problem as agents of sporadic or collective food-borne infections associated with the consumption of fish or shellfish. Samples of raw shrimp (n = 299), fished in coastal areas of the city of Agadir, Morocco, and collected from its fish marketplace, were examined for the presence of pathogenic vibrios. Microbiological analysis was carried out according to a protocol using thiosulphate citrate bile sucrose (TCBS) agar and CHROMagar Vibrio (CV) as selective media. Presumptive-positive colo

The biological effects of supernates obtained from different strains of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio anguillarum isolated from diseased fish have been studied by inoculation on two fish species, eel and rainbow trout, and two fish cell lines. These supernates possess neuroexcitatory properties, and so, when they are injected into both fish species, they trigger convulsions, wriggling, contortive swimming and respiratory arrest coupled with increased respiratory reflex. Furthermore, after the application of the supernates on cultures of noradrenergic pheochromocytoma PC12 cells, an increase

Antibiotics are often used to treat severe Vibrio infections, with third-generation cephalosporins and tetracyclines combined or fluoroquinolones alone being recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Increases in antibiotic resistance of both environmental and clinical vibrios are of concern; however, limited longitudinal data have been generated among environmental isolates to inform how resistance patterns may be changing over time. Hence, we evaluated long-term trends in antibiotic resistance of vibrios isolated from Chesapeake Bay waters (Maryland) across two 3-year

Vibrio cholerae, a Gram-negative bacterium, is widely known as the cause of cholera, an acute diarrheal disease. While only certain strains are capable of causing cholera, non-O1/non-O139 V. cholerae strains (NOVC) can lead to non-pathogenic colonization or mild illnesses such as gastroenteritis. In immunocompromised patients, however, NOVC can cause severe infections, including rare cases of bacteremia, especially in those with underlying conditions like liver disease, hematologic disorders, and malignancies. This case report presents a rare instance of NOVC bacteremia in a 71-year-old patien

Vibrio harveyi (Vh) and Vibrio vulnificus (Vv) are major bacterial pathogens affecting farmed eels, but their comparative virulence mechanisms remain poorly characterized. This study combined histopathology and transcriptomic profiling to investigate organ-specific damage and host responses in American eels (Anguilla rostrata, 20 g per fish, for a total of 60 fish) following experimental infection with LD50 doses of Vh (strain HA_1, 7.5 × 104 CFU/fish) and Vv (strain FJ_4, 5.0 × 105 CFU/fish). Tissue samples from liver, kidney, and spleen were collected at 0, 36, and 60 h post-infection (hpi).

A Gram-staining-negative, curved-rod-shaped bacterium with close resemblance to Vibrio cholerae, the aetiological agent of cholera, was isolated over the course of several years from coastal brackish water (17 strains) and from clinical cases (two strains) in the United States. 16S rRNA gene identity with V. cholerae exceeded 98 % yet an average nucleotide identity based on genome data of around 86 % and multi locus sequence analysis of six housekeeping genes (mdh, adk, gyrB, recA, pgi and rpoB) clearly delineated these isolates as a distinct genotypic cluster within the V. cholerae-V. mimicus

Some strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and non-O1 V cholerae produce a bacterial-cell-associated, heat-stable material that is cytotoxic for hela cells. Cytotoxicity is completely neutralised by antibody to purified Shigella dysenteriae 1 (Shiga) toxin but not by antibody to purified cholera toxin.

Globally, the diverse bacterial genus Vibrio is the most important group of bacterial pathogens found in marine and coastal waters. These bacteria can cause an array of human infections via direct exposure to seawater or through the consumption of seafoods grown and cultivated in coastal and estuarine settings. Crucially, we appear to be on the cusp of an alarming global increase in Vibrio disease. A worldwide increase in seafood consumption, the globalisation of the seafood trade, the more frequent use of coastal waters for recreational activities, and climate change all contribute to greatly

The Vibrionaceae is a highly diverse family of aquatic bacteria. Some members of this ubiquitous group can cause a variety of diseases in humans ranging from cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae, severe septicemia caused by Vibrio vulnificus, to acute gastroenteritis by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Planet Earth is experiencing unprecedented changes of planetary scale associated with climate change. These environmental perturbations paired with overpopulation and pollution are increasing the distribution of pathogenic Vibrios and exacerbating the risk of causing infections. In this chapter, we discuss

Bullfrog is one of the most important economic aquatic animals in China that is widely cultured in southern China and is a key breed recommended as an industry of poverty alleviation in China. During recent years, a fatal bacterial disease has often been found in cultured bullfrogs. The clinical manifestations of the diseased bullfrogs were severe intestinal inflammation and an anal prolapse. A bacterial pathogen was isolated from the diseased bullfrog intestines. The bacterium was identified as Vibrio cholerae using morphological, biochemical and 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis. In this study,

CsrA is a posttranscriptional global regulator in Vibrio cholerae Although CsrA is critical for V. cholerae survival within the mammalian host, the regulatory targets of CsrA remain mostly unknown. To identify pathways controlled by CsrA, RNA-seq transcriptome analysis was carried out by comparing the wild type and the csrA mutant grown to early exponential, mid-exponential, and stationary phases of growth. This enabled us to identify the global effects of CsrA-mediated regulation throughout the V. cholerae growth cycle. We found that CsrA regulates 22% of the V. cholerae transcriptome, with s

A cholera model has been formulated to incorporate the interaction of bacteria and phage. It is shown that there may exist three equilibria: one disease free and two endemic equilibria. Threshold parameters have been derived to characterize stability of these equilibria. Sensitivity analysis and disease control strategies have been employed to characterize the impact of bacteria-phage interaction on cholera dynamics.

The bacterium Vibrio cholerae is the etiologic agent of the severe human diarrheal disease cholera. The gut microbiome, or the native community of microorganisms found in the human gastrointestinal tract, is increasingly being recognized as a factor in driving susceptibility to infection, in vivo fitness, and host interactions of this pathogen. Here, we review a subset of the emerging studies in how gut microbiome structure and microbial function are able to drive V. cholerae virulence gene regulation, metabolism, and modulate host immune responses to cholera infection and vaccination. Improve

Vibrio cholerae is a noninvasive pathogen that colonizes the small intestine and produces cholera toxin, causing severe secretory diarrhea. Cholera results in long lasting immunity, and recent studies have improved our understanding of the antigenic repertoire of V. cholerae Interactions between the host, V. cholerae, and the intestinal microbiome are now recognized as factors which impact susceptibility to cholera and the ability to mount a successful immune response to vaccination. Here, we review recent data and corresponding models to describe immune responses to V. cholerae infection and

Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination causes serious foodborne illness and has become a global health problem. As a disinfectant, aqueous ozone can effectively kill a number of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microorganisms. In this study, three factors, namely, the aqueous ozone concentration, the exposure time, and the bacterial density, were analyzed by response surface methodology, and the aqueous ozone concentration was the most influential factor in the sterilization ratio. Under low aqueous ozone concentrations (less than 0.125 mg/l), the bacterial cell membranes remained intact
