BACKGROUND: Vibrio vulnificus can cause a rapidly progressive fatal soft-tissue infection. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of skin and soft-tissue infections reported worldwide, and, in particular, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as the most common isolate in emergency departments. The purposes of the present study were to compare the specific characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus and Staphylococcus aureus infections and to compare the clinical outcomes of Vibrio vulnificus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococ…

A total of 57 Vibrio vulnificus isolates from coastal water were characterized for their antimicrobial resistance, plasmid profiles and were typed by the PCR-based techniques: a random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method and the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence (ERIC) method. All isolates were susceptible to chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Fifty-one isolates were resistant to one or more of the other antibiotics tested. Plasmid analysis indicated that only 18 isolates carried small plasmids of 1.6 to 16 megadal…

Sepsis, cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis rarely have been described as causes of compartment syndrome. We report a case in which forearm compartment syndrome presented as the initial symptom of systemic infection. Vibrio vulnificus, the etiologic pathogen of the compartment syndrome, was isolated from wound and blood cultures. The patient was treated with systemic antibiotic treatment and multiple forearm fasciotomies. The infectious process progressed rapidly, however and due to underlying liver insufficiency, the patient died of hepatorenal syndrome. This case illustrates the nature of …

Clinical features in Vibrio infection are generally represented by gastrointestinal involvements such as food poisoning, and its prognosis is usually good. However, Vibrio vulnificus infection not uncommonly causes serious problems including sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis of the extremities, and other conditions, sometimes resulting in fatal outcome. In the present study, we analyzed clinical microbiological aspects of five cases with V. vulnificus infection. All the strains of V. vulnificus isolated in five patients are oxidase-positive Gram negative rods presenting comma-like configuration, w…

Vibrio vulnificus infection, which is a rare and fatal disease, can be categorized clinically as either primary septicemia or wound infection. The clinical presentation of patients with primary septicemia can vary from fever alone to a more severe illness including high-grade bullous lesions, hypotension, and shock. Wound infection typically results from either injury to the skin in a marine environment or contact of a preexisting wound with sea water. We reported eight cases with Vibrio vulnificus infection in Chang gung Memorial Hospital and reviewed ten other cases previously reported with …

Vibrio vulnificus, a gram-negative pathogenic bacterium, transmitted via undercooked seafood or contaminated seawater, causes septicemia and wound infections. In this study, we analyzed 15 clinical and 11 environmental isolates. In total, 20 sequence types (STs), including eight novel STs, were identified. Antibiotic resistance gene analysis commonly detected the cyclic AMP receptor protein (CRP) in both the clinical and environmental isolates. Interestingly, clinical and environmental isolates were non-susceptible to third-generation cephalosporins, such as ceftazidime and cefotaxime, complic…

Vibrio vulnificus is found in marine waters near the coast around the world. Infection with this gram-negative rod, via ingestion of raw seafood or via a skin wound following contact with contaminated estuarine or marine water, can cause necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis. Most of patients with Vibrio vulnificus infection have underlying liver dysfunction or diabetes mellitus. Due to the high mortality and short latent periods, control of this infection depends on early identification of the bacterial species and prompt initiation of intensive care. Accordingly, the development of a technique th…

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft-tissue infection with a high risk of fatality. Infection with Vibrio vulnificus can lead to development of necrotizing fasciitis and primary septicemia, and occurs mostly in immunocompromised host-associated diseases such as hepatic disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal insufficiency, and adrenal insufficiency. Early recognition and treatment of the infection, which are unclear, are vital to patient welfare. We studied the disease epidemiology and reviewed the prognosis and clinical features of patients treated using our developed protocol. Clinical manifest…

In this case series, we report two unusual cases of Vibrio bacteremia due to exposure to floodwater after Hurricane Helene. This presentation is particularly alarming in light of growing evidence that warming ocean temperatures are contributing to stronger hurricanes, which, in turn, lead to more extensive flooding and storm surges, a trend that creates ideal conditions for the spread of waterborne pathogens such as Vibrio vulnificus. Previously, within the humid subtropical region, only a handful of cases have been documented over the past 20 years. With the increasing number of cases, it is …

Vibrio vulnificus is a marine-associated gram-negative bacillus with the potential to cause severe sepsis. V. vulnificus is classically associated with interactions with shellfish, be it due to inoculation of the bacteria via shell laceration or ingestion of raw shellfish. Patients with underlying liver disease are prone to more severe outcomes associated with V. vulnificus infections. In this case, a male patient in his late 30s with chronic alcohol use disorder presented with acute encephalopathy and hematemesis. History revealed ingestion of raw oysters days prior to presentation. After adm…

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative, curved, rod-shaped organism that can cause sepsis due to either gastroenteritis when ingested (usually via raw oysters) or skin infections when introduced into cuts or abrasions. Found in estuarine waters (coastal waters where fresh water from streams mixes with salt water from the ocean resulting in water of intermediate salinity (i.e., brackish water)), it most commonly causes clinical disease in individuals with cirrhosis, diabetes, or other immunocompromised states. Here, we describe the case of a 59-year-old male, with known heavy alcohol use and hype…

BACKGROUND: Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative bacterium causing three clinical syndromes namely, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin sepsis and primary sepsis. Primary sepsis exhibits mortality rates exceeding 50%, particularly in the immunocompromised. Vibrio vulnificus is transmitted via consumption of contaminated seafood and contaminated seawater skin exposure. We describe a rare case of an immunocompetent male presenting with an atypical Vibrio vulnificus infection, culminating in severe pneumonia requiring intensive care.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46 year old Indian male dockyard worker, a no…

The marine bacterium Vibrio vulnificus infects humans via food or water contamination, leading to serious manifestations, including gastroenteritis, wound infections, and septic shock. Previous studies suggest phylogenetic Lineage 1 isolates with the vcgC allele of the vcg gene cause human infections, whereas Lineage 2 isolates with the vcgE allele are less pathogenic. Mouse studies suggest that some variants of the primary toxin could drive more serious infections. A collection of 109 V. vulnificus United States human clinical isolates from 2001 to 2019 with paired clinical outcome data were …

Vibrio vulnificus is a common gram-negative bacterium, which might cause morbidity and mortality in patients following consumption of seafood or exposure to seawater in Southeast China. We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of patients with laboratory confirmed V. vulnificus infection. Twenty one patients were divided into a survival group and a non-surviving (or death) group according to their clinical outcome. Clinical data and measurements were statistically analyzed. Four patients (19.05%) died and five patients gave positive cultures from bile fluid, and 16 other patients gave positiv…

OBJECTIVES: The in vivo efficacy of a cefotaxime-ciprofloxacin combination against Vibrio vulnificus and the effects on rtxA1 expression of commonly used antibiotics are unknown.
METHODS: In vitro time-kill studies were performed to evaluate synergism. Female BALB/c mice were injected subcutaneously with 1×10(7) or 1×10(8) cfu of V. vulnificus. Antibiotic therapy was initiated at 2 h after inoculation in the following four therapy groups: cefotaxime; ciprofloxacin; cefotaxime-plus-ciprofloxacin; and cefotaxime-plus-minocycline. The cytotoxicity of V. vulnificus for HeLa cells was measured usi…

Vibrio vulnificus is a highly invasive human pathogen that exists naturally in estuarine environment and coastal waters. In this study, we used different PCR assays to detect V. vulnificus in 260 seafood and 80 seawater samples. V. vulnificus was present in about 34 (13%) of the 260 seafood samples and 18 (23%) of the 80 seawater samples. Repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (REP-PCR) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR) were applied to subtype the V. vulnificus isolates. Twenty-five REP profiles and 45 ERIC profiles were observed, and the isolates were categoriz…

Vibrio vulnificus, a coastal marine bacterium and opportunistic pathogen, poses increasing health risks due to rising sea water temperatures. While it harbors diverse virulence factors, its disease mechanisms remain poorly understood. To address this, we sequenced 82 environmental isolates from the Baltic Sea and combined them with 325 published genomes (clinical and environmental) for comparative analysis. Phylogenetic reconstruction revealed four major lineages, with Baltic strains restricted to L2 and L4. Clinical and environmental strains were found across all lineages, suggesting phylogen…
