[The structure and significance of enterobacterial common antigen (ECA)].

The enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) is a carbohydrate-derived cell surface antigen present in all Gram-negative bacteria belonging to Enterobacteriaceae family. Biosynthetic pathways shared by ECA and LPS (endotoxin) suggest close connections between these antigens. ECA occurs in three different forms: a phosphatidyl-linked linear polysaccharide anchored on the cell surface (ECAPG), a cyclic form built of 4-6 repeating units localized in the periplasm (ECACYC) and as a linear polysaccharide covalently linked to LPS core oligosaccharide (ECALPS). Regardless of ECA form, poly- and oligosacc

Virulence properties of three new Photobacterium species affecting cultured fish.

AIMS: Several virulence factors of three new Photobacterium species: Photobacterium toruni, Photobacterium malacitanum and Photobacterium andalusiense associated with diseases of cultured redbanded seabream (Pagrus auriga) were studied. The exoenzymatic activities, adherence and cytotoxic capabilities, and iron-uptake mechanisms were determined both in bacterial extracellular products (ECP) and whole bacterial cells. The histopathology damages provoked on redbanded seabream by the ECP was also studied. METHODS AND RESULTS: The highest exoenzymatic activities of the ECP were alkaline- and acid

Effects of low-dose dietary antimicrobial peptide Scy-hepc on disease resistance in Larimichthys crocea under secondary infection.

BACKGROUD: Secondary infection by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, triggered by Cryptocaryon irritans, has become one of the most difficult diseases to control in Larimichthys crocea aquaculture due to its complex pathogens and diverse infection mechanisms. Traditional antibiotic therapies often face challenges such as resistance and low efficacy. Previous studies have shown that the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) Scy-hepc has potential as an immune-enhancing alternative to antibiotics. This study identified typical features of a natural outbreak of V. parahaemolyticus secondary infection triggered by C.

Snapshot of resistome, virulome and mobilome in aquaculture.

Aquaculture environments can be hotspots for resistance genes through the surrounding environment. Our objective was to study the resistome, virulome and mobilome of Gram-negative bacteria isolated in seabream and bivalve molluscs, using a WGS approach. Sixty-six Gram-negative strains (Aeromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Hafniaceae, Morganellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Shewanellaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Yersiniaceae families) were selected for genomic characterization. The species and MLST were determined, and antibiotic/disinfectants/heavy metals resistance genes, virulence determinants, MGE, and

Diversity and antimicrobial resistance among bacterial isolates from finfish aquaculture in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Global aquaculture, has expanded rapidly, especially in Southeast Asia, with Thailand emerging as a leading producer. However, the sector faces economic losses from disease outbreaks and has problems with escalating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). RESULTS: This study examined bacterial diversity and AMR in 695 moribund fish samples collected from regions across Thailand between 2018 and 2024, and spanning eight key finfish aquaculture species such as tilapia, Asian sea bass, snakeskin gourami, snakehead, walking catfish and carp species. Gram-negative bacteria (86.62% of isolates)

Necrotizing soft-tissue infections and sepsis caused by Vibrio vulnificus compared with those caused by Aeromonas species.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio and Aeromonas species, which can cause necrotizing fasciitis and primary septicemia, are members of the Vibrionaceae family and thrive in aquatic environments. Because the clinical symptoms and signs of necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis caused by these two bacteria are similar, the purposes of this study were to describe the clinical characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus and Aeromonas infections, to analyze the risk factors for death, and to compare the effects of surgical treatment on the outcome. METHODS: The cases of thirty-two patients with necrotizing soft-tissue infecti

Aeromonas caviae mimicking Vibrio cholerae infectious enteropathy in a cholera-endemic region with possible public health consequences: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas species have been documented to yield false positive results in microbiological tests for Vibrio cholerae. They share many biochemical properties with Vibrio species, with which they were jointly classified in the family Vibrionaceae until genotypic information provided new insights. Aeromonas species are increasingly associated with gastrointestinal infections, albeit with great apparent variation in pathogenicity and virulence both between and within species of the genus. We report two cases with clinically mild cholera-like symptoms, at a time when a cholera outbreak w

Host-gut microbiota interactions shape parasite infections in farmed Atlantic salmon.

Animals and their associated microbiota share long evolutionary histories. However, it is not always clear how host genotype and microbiota interact to affect phenotype. We applied a hologenomic approach to explore how host-microbiota interactions shape lifetime growth and parasite infection in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Multi-omics data sets were generated from the guts of 460 salmon, 82% of which were naturally infected with an intestinal cestode. A single Mycoplasma bacterial strain, MAG01, dominated the gut metagenome of large, non-parasitized fish, consistent with previous stud

The role of seafood in foodborne diseases in the United States of America.

In the United States of America, seafood ranked third on the list of products which caused foodborne disease between 1983 and 1992. Outbreaks connected with fish vectors were caused by scombroid, ciguatoxin, bacteria and unknown agents; in shellfish, unknown agents, paralytic shellfish poisoning, Vibrio spp. and other bacteria, followed by hepatitis A virus, were responsible for the outbreaks. At least ten genera of bacterial pathogens have been implicated in seafood-borne diseases. Over the past twenty-five years, bacterial pathogens associated with faecal contamination have represented only

The thermostable direct hemolysin from Grimontia hollisae causes acute hepatotoxicity in vitro and in vivo.

BACKGROUND: G. hollisae thermostable direct hemolysin (Gh-TDH) is produced by most strains of G. hollisae. This toxin has been reported to be absorbed in the intestines in humans. Secondary liver injury might be caused by venous return of the toxin through the portal system. We aimed to firstly analyze the in vitro and in vivo hepatotoxicity of Gh-TDH. METHODS: Liver cells (primary human non-cancer cell and FL83B mouse cells) were treated and mice (BALB/c) were fed with this toxin to investigate its hepatotoxicity. Morphological examination and cytotoxicity assays using liver cells were also

Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) as marine ecosystem sentinels: ecotoxicology and emerging diseases.

Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) are small cetaceans that inhabit coastal regions down to a 50 m depth. As a coastally distributed species, they are exposed to a variety of human-induced risks that include passive fishing nets, persistent environmental pollution, and emerging diseases. As a top predatorS. guianensis occupies an important ecological niche in marine ecosystems. However, this niche also exposes this dolphin to extensive biomagnification of marine contaminants that may accumulate and be stored throughout their life of about 30 years. In this paper, we have compiled available da
