The recent emergence of a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, responsible for COVID-19, is a new warning of the risk to public health represented by viral zoonoses and in particular by coronaviruses. Mainly described as being able to infect the upper and lower respiratory tract, coronaviruses can also infect the central and peripheral nervous systems as many other respiratory viruses, such as influenza or respiratory syncytial virus. Viral infections of the nervous system are a major public health concern as they can cause devastating illnesses up to death, especially when they occur in the elderly,

Chapare virus (CHAPV) is an emerging New World arenavirus that causes Chapare haemorrhagic fever (CHHF), a severe and often fatal illness. First identified in Bolivia in 2003, CHAPV remains geographically limited but has shown potential for nosocomial transmission. It causes symptoms similar to other viral haemorrhagic fevers, including fever, muscle pain, bleeding, and neurological complications. The virus is primarily spread through contact with infected rodents, although limited human-to-human transmission has been documented. CHAPV has a bisegmented RNA genome with ambisense polarity. It s

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic infectious diseases have significantly impacted global public health, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic that triggered an unprecedented worldwide crisis with millions of infections. Among animals closely associated with humans, canines occupy a prominent position due to their extensive integration into human daily life. Consequently, investigating the virome of canines in close contact with humans holds significant scientific and public health implications.
RESULTS: This study selected lymph node tissues from 24 dogs in close contact with humans from Shanghai and He

The Potos flavus is a nocturnal mammal that lives in neotropical forests from Central America to South America. A study of four cases of rabies in Potos flavus was conducted; these occurred in April 2012 in the Madre de Dios region in Peru and were collected as part of epidemiological surveillance. The analysis performed in the regional reference laboratory of Madre de Dios determined the presence of the rabies virus antigen in three of the brain tissue samples. Results were verified in the Laboratory of Viral Zoonoses of the Peruvian National Institute of Health by direct immunofluorescence.

Five years before the 2022 multi-country mpox outbreak, Nigeria and Cameroon reported their first cases in more than three decades1,2. Whereas the outbreak in Nigeria is recognized as an ongoing human epidemic, the drivers of the resurgence in Cameroon remain unclear3,4. The rate of zoonoses remains uncertain in both countries, and gaps in genomic data obscure the timing and zoonotic and geographic origin of monkeypox virus (MPXV) emergence in humans. Here, to address these uncertainties, we sequenced 118 MPXV genomes isolated from cases in Nigeria and Cameroon between 2018 and 2023. We show t

The Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tropical viral zoonosis first reported in Spain with 17 detected cases since 2010-2024. Health professionals, including veterinarians, play a crucial role in controlling and preventing this disease. This study aimed to analyse and compare the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of veterinary students and professionals in Spain regarding CCHF and zoonoses in general. Additionally, the study highlighted the value of epidemiological surveys as a tool for identifying knowledge gaps related to specific diseases. A cross-sectional survey was conduct

B virus infection of humans results in high morbidity and mortality in as many as 80% of identified cases. The main objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of conventional and experimental antiviral drug susceptibilities of B virus isolates from multiple macaque species and zoonotically infected humans. We used a plaque reduction assay to establish the effective inhibitory doses of acyclovir, ganciclovir, and vidarabine, as well as those of a group of experimental nucleoside analogs with known anti-herpes simplex virus activity. Four of the experimental drugs tested were

Illegal bushmeat traffic is an important threat to biodiversity conservation of several endangered species and may contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious diseases in humans. The hunting, manipulation and consumption of wildlife-based products, especially those of primate origin, may be a threat to human health; however, few studies have investigated the role of bushmeat trade and consumption as a potential source of human infections to date. In this study, we report the screening of viral pathogens in African simian game seized by French customs at Toulouse Blagnac Airport. Epifl

INTRODUCTION: The authors present a survey on the incidence of occupational infectious and parasitic diseases in the Czech Republic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1996 and 2000, occupational infectious and invasive diseases were diagnosed in 1906 patients. This is about 18% of the total number of diagnosed cases in the period under study. The total number of the diagnosed diseases included 68% of those occurring due to interhuman transmission, 29% of zoonoses and 3% of tropical diseases. The majority of occupational infectious diseases developed in health care workers (66%). This was followe

Rabies is one of the most lethal viral zoonoses, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to post-exposure prophylaxis is limited. Conventional post-exposure prophylaxis relies on rabies immune globulin and vaccination. This study evaluated the safety of a monoclonal antibody cocktail, docaravimab and miromavimab, in 159 patients with severe animal bites. The cocktail was administered locally to 94.3 percent of participants and both locally and systemically to 5.7 percent. Adverse events were reported in 10.7 percent of cases, predominantly mild and local, with no systemic

The influenza A virus (IAV) has been a major cause of several pandemics, underscoring the importance of elucidating its transmission dynamics. This review investigates potential intermediate hosts in the cross-species transmission of IAV to humans, focusing on the factors that facilitate zoonotic events. We evaluate the roles of various animal hosts, including pigs, galliformes, companion animals, minks, marine mammals, and other animals, in the spread of IAV to humans.

The re-emergence of human mpox with the multi-country outbreak and a recent report of borealpox (previously Alaskapox) resulting in one death has heightened awareness of the significance of the Poxviridae family and their zoonotic potential. This review examines various poxviruses affecting humans, with discussion of less commonly encountered Poxviridae members, including pathogenesis, epidemiology, and diagnostic methods. Poxvirus treatment is beyond the intended scope of this review and will not be discussed.

West Nile virus, a widely distributed mosquito-borne flavivirus, is responsible for numerous animal and human infections in Europe, Africa and the Americas. In Hungary, the average number of human infections falls between 10 and 20 cases each year. The severity of clinically manifesting infections varies widely from the milder form of West Nile fever to West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND). In routine laboratory diagnosis of human West Nile virus infections, serological methods are mainly applied due to the limited duration of viremia. However, recent studies suggest that detection of West N

Rabies, caused by rabies virus (RABV), is one of the most important neurotropic zoonoses and poses a severe threat to human and animal health. Exploration of its mechanism of neural transmission is meaningful but still insufficient. Here, we described the effects of microtubule-depolymerizing drugs and inhibitors of microtubule motor proteins on RABV infection. Colchicine, a microtubule-depolymerizing drug, significantly impeded RABV production in N2a cells. Overexpression of CC1 or p50 attenuated viral infection through the functional disruption of cytoplasmic dynein, which was consistent wit

In the last 2 decades, pathogens originating in animals may have triggered three coronavirus pandemics, including the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Thus, evaluation of the spillover risk of animal severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-related coronavirus (SARSr-CoV) is important in the context of future disease preparedness. However, there is no analytical framework to assess the spillover risk of SARSr-CoVs, which cannot be determined by sequence analysis alone. Here, we established an integrity framework to evaluate the spillover risk of an animal SARSr-CoV by testing how viruses bre

Forest-based communities manage many risks to health and socio-economic welfare including the increasing threat of emerging zoonoses that are expected to disproportionately affect poor and marginalised groups, and further impair their precarious livelihoods, particularly in Low-and-Middle Income (LMIC) settings. Yet, there is a relative dearth of empirical research on the vulnerability and adaptation pathways of poor and marginalised groups facing emerging zoonoses. Drawing on a survey of 229 households and a series of key-informant interviews in the Western Ghats, we examine the factors affec

Infections by endemic viruses, and the vaccines used to control them, often provide cross-protection against related viruses, potentially altering the transmission dynamics and likelihood of emergence of new zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential. Here, we investigate how population immunity after the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the likelihood of emergence of a novel sarbecovirus, termed SARS-CoV-X. To this end, we combined empirical cross-neutralisation data with mathematical modelling to identify key immunological and epidemiological factors shaping sarbecovirus emergence. We show that

Avian influenza viruses have long been a significant problem for the poultry livestock sector, due to the pathogenicity of some strains and the economic and environmental damage they cause. The close relationship between poultry species of livestock interest and the detection of these viruses in other livestock and pets has prompted the scientific community to investigate the transmission dynamics and the risk of contagion for humans. Research shows how the possible spillover can be driven by some amino acid mutations that regulate the molecular interactions between viruses and different hosts
