Simian varicella virus (SVV) was first isolated in 1966 from African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Nairobi, Kenya, to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (UK) (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967). SVV infection caused severe disease that resulted in a 56% case fatality rate (CFR) in the imported animals within 48 h of the appearance of a varicella-like rash (Clarkson et al., Arch Gesamte Virusforsch 22:219-234, 1967; Hemme et al., Am J Trop Med Hyg 94:1095-1099, 2016). The deceased animals presented with fever, widespre

The 2022 monkeypox outbreak, caused by the zoonotic monkeypox virus, has spread across 6 World Health Organization regions (the Americas, Africa, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and South-East Asia) and was declared a public health emergency of international concern on July 23, 2022. The global situation is especially concerning given the atypically high rate of person-to-person transmission, which suggests viral evolution to an established human pathogen. Pregnant women are at heightened risk of vertical transmission of the monkeypox virus because of immune vulnerability and n

INTRODUCTION: Infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the commonest cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. HEV was discovered in 1980s and is known to have small non-enveloped virions with single-stranded RNA genome of positive polarity. In recent years. In recent years, availability of new information has changed our understanding of this virus and the pathogenesis of the related disease.
AREAS COVERED: This article reviews the current knowledge about structure, genomic organization, taxonomy, genetic epidemiology, host specificity and replication of the human HEV and of various closely-relat

BACKGROUND: Rabies is an acute fatal encephalitis caused by all members of the Lyssavirus genus. The first human rabies survivor without benefit of prior vaccination was reported from Milwaukee in 2005. We report a second unvaccinated patient who showed early recovery from rabies and then died accidentally during convalescence, providing an unparalleled opportunity to examine the histopathology as well as immune and virological correlates of early recovery from human rabies.
METHODS: Case report, rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indirect and direct f

Sanitation services play a critical role in controlling transmission of numerous waterborne pathogens, especially viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis and hepatitis. The viral agents with the greatest public health impact are hepatitis A virus, rotaviruses and noroviruses, adenoviruses, and enteroviruses, contaminating many Brazilian aquatic ecosystems. Heavy circulation of viruses in the environment has been related to inadequate local sanitary conditions, including incomplete coverage of services or inefficacy of conventional technologies in eliminating or reducing the viral load in wate

Translational research serves as a bench-to-field "translation" of basic scientific research into practical diagnostic procedures and therapies useful in human and veterinary clinical services. The productivity of translational research involving infectious diseases relevant to both human and animal health (e.g., influenza diagnosis and epidemiology using emerging molecular detection and identification methods) can be maximized when both human and veterinary medical virology disciplines are integrated. Influenza viruses are continually evolving through site-specific mutation and segment reasso

OBJECTIVES: To determine the level of immunity to polio in adult personnel at the National Institute for Virology (NIV), South Africa.
METHODS: Polio neutralizing antibodies results on 776 NIV staff members tested between 1979 and 1999 and seroresponses in seronegative personnel given a booster vaccination were analysed.
RESULTS: 613 of the 776 (79%) personnel had neutralizing polio antibodies to all three types, independent of age, gender, race or job category. Types 1 and 2 antibodies were found in 92% and 94%, respectively, but type 3 was less prevalent at 87%. Of the 93 persons seronegat

Some of the main challenges I encountered in clinical virology from 1958-1974 are described. In the earlier years there were two main areas of exploration, namely, neurological and respiratory infections. Later, tests for hepatitis and for rubella were developed and these diseases became of increasing importance.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia, is a hyperendemic area for dengue virus (DENV) infections. However, data on virus distribution in this area is currently limited. This study aims to assess the distribution of serotypes and genotypes of DENV isolated from dengue patients in primary healthcare facilities (PHC) in 2018.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three PHCs in Bandung City from May to October 2018. Suspected dengue patients with a fever lasting more than five days were enrolled. Demographic and clinical data were collected upon enrollment. Dengue

Viruses have brought humanity many challenges: respiratory infection, cancer, neurological impairment and immunosuppression to name a few. Virology research over the last 60+ years has responded to reduce this disease burden with vaccines and antivirals. Despite this long history, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented attention to the field of virology. Some of this attention is focused on concern about the safe conduct of research with human pathogens. A small but vocal group of individuals has seized upon these concerns - conflating legitimate questions about safely conducting viru

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), caused by Dabie bandavirus (SFTSV), is an emerging infectious disease first identified in China. Since its discovery, infections have spread throughout East Asian countries primarily through tick bites but also via transmission between animals and humans. The expanding range of ticks, the primary vectors for SFTSV, combined with migration patterns of tick-carrying birds, sets the stage for the global spread of this virus. SFTSV rapidly evolves due to continuous mutation and reassortment; currently, no approved vaccines or antiviral drugs are

Vladimir Sertić was a pioneer of bacteriophage research in the period between the two world wars. He was born and educated in Croatia, where he made his initial discoveries, and joined Félix d'Herelle's Laboratoire du Bactériophage in Paris in 1928. Original documents and a box with hundreds of sealed bacteriophages samples were kept in Sertić's Zagreb home for decades. Following Vladimir's death, his sister passed this archival material to Professor Zdravko Lacković in 1989. Some years later, these artefacts were opened and studied. Additionally, we conducted a literature search using the ter

Correlations between cytogenetics, histology, and clinical course continue to emerge in studies of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The previously recognized association between the t(14;18) chromosomal translocation and follicular lymphoma has been confirmed; abnormalities of chromosome 3 have correlated specifically with diffuse large cell lymphoma and abnormalities of chromosome 1 have been frequently present in T-cell lymphomas. Rearrangements involving 11q13 (bcl-1) occur most commonly in diffuse lymphocytic lymphoma of intermediate differentiation. Several new recurrent chromosomal abnormalities

Poxviruses are large (200-450 nm) and enveloped viruses carrying double-stranded DNA genome with an epidermal cell-specific adaptation. The genus Orthopoxvirus within Poxviridae family constitutes several medically and veterinary important viruses including variola (smallpox), vaccinia, monkeypox virus (MPXV), and cowpox. The monkeypox disease (mpox) has recently emerged as a public health emergency caused by MPXV. An increasing number of human cases of MPXV have been documented in non-endemic nations without any known history of contact with animals brought in from endemic and enzootic region

Ebola virus disease (EVD) caused by Ebola virus (EBOV) is a severe, often fatal, hemorrhagic disease. A critical component of the public health response to curb EVD epidemics is the use of a replication-competent, recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-vectored Ebola vaccine, rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP (ERVEBO). In this Gem, we will discuss the past and ongoing development of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP, highlighting the importance of basic science and the strength of public-private partnerships to translate fundamental virology into a licensed VSV-vectored Ebola vaccine.

The present article provides an overview of the key messages of the topics discussed at the '7th Workshop on Paediatric Virology', which was organised virtually on December 20, 2021 by the Institute of Paediatric Virology, located on the Island of Euboea in Greece. The workshop's plenary lectures were on: i) viral pandemics and epidemics in the ancient Mediterranean; ii) the impact of obesity on the outcome of viral infections in children and adolescents; and iii) COVID-19 and artificial intelligence. Despite the scarcity of evidence from fossils and remnants, viruses have been recognised as s

First described in 1958, the human monkeypox virus (hMPXV) is a neglected zoonotic pathogen closely associated with the smallpox virus. The virus usually spreads via close contact with the infected animal or human and has been endemic mostly in parts of the African continent. However, with the recent increase in trade, tourism, and travel, the virus has caused outbreaks in countries outside Africa. The recent outbreak in 2022 has been puzzling given the lack of epidemiological connection and the possible sexual transmission of the virus. Furthermore, there is limited understanding of the struc
