Perspective: The Promise of Virtual Reality as an Immersive Therapeutic.

In this perspective, we discuss the promise of virtual reality (VR) as an immersive therapeutic (ITx) delivery device. We review the neurobiology of learning and show that VR broadly engages multiple learning systems in the brain in synchrony thus having the unique potential to increase the effectiveness and speed of therapeutic change. We examine one application of VR in the delivery of chronic pain management therapy. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of current therapies such as pain education and cognitive behavior therapy and suggest that VR has the potential to deliver self-adminis

Virtual Reality as a Moderator of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy with the use of psychedelic substances, including psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), has demonstrated promise in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, addiction, and treatment-resistant depression. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PP) represents a unique psychopharmacological model that leverages the profound effects of the psychedelic experience. That experience is characterized by strong dependency on two key factors: participant mindset and the therapeutic environment. As such, therape

The effect of water immersion on vection in virtual reality.

Research about vection (illusory self-motion) has investigated a wide range of sensory cues and employed various methods and equipment, including use of virtual reality (VR). However, there is currently no research in the field of vection on the impact of floating in water while experiencing VR. Aquatic immersion presents a new and interesting method to potentially enhance vection by reducing conflicting sensory information that is usually experienced when standing or sitting on a stable surface. This study compares vection, visually induced motion sickness, and presence among participants exp

Virtual Reality as a Clinical Tool for Pain Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the use of virtual reality (VR) therapies as a clinical tool for the management of acute and chronic pain. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent articles support the hypothesis that VR therapies can effectively distract patients who suffer from chronic pain and from acute pain stimulated in trials. Clinical studies yield promising results in the application of VR therapies to a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, phantom limb pain, and regional specific pain from past injuries and illnesses. Current management techniques for acute and chronic

Virtual reality exposure in the treatment of social phobia.

Social phobia is one of the most frequent psychiatric disorders and is accessible to two forms of scientifically validated treatments: anti-depressant drugs and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Graded exposure to feared social situations (either in vivo or by imagining the situations) is fundamental to obtain an improvement of the anxious symptoms. Virtual reality (VR) may be an alternative to these standard exposure techniques and seems to bring significant advantages by allowing exposures to numerous and varied situations. Moreover studies have shown that human subjects are appropriately sens

Virtual reality of the lower urinary tract in women.

Advances in computerized and imaging technology permit both students and doctors to depict the anatomy of the human pelvis more realistically than with previous methods. Further refinements outline fine pelvic structures, such as the nerve plexus, which may as a result be spared during major pelvic surgery, thus preserving the function of the bladder neck and urethra. Dynamic computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, coupled with three-dimensional depiction of the lower urinary tract and its adjacent structures, enable visualization of the whole lower urinary tract and the pelvic

Validation of the Virtual Reality Neuroscience Questionnaire: Maximum Duration of Immersive Virtual Reality Sessions Without the Presence of Pertinent Adverse Symptomatology.

There are major concerns about the suitability of immersive virtual reality (VR) systems (i.e., head-mounted display; HMD) to be implemented in research and clinical settings, because of the presence of nausea, dizziness, disorientation, fatigue, and instability (i.e., VR induced symptoms and effects; VRISE). Research suggests that the duration of a VR session modulates the presence and intensity of VRISE, but there are no suggestions regarding the appropriate maximum duration of VR sessions. The implementation of high-end VR HMDs in conjunction with ergonomic VR software seems to mitigate the

Virtual Reality in Medical Education: A Concept Analysis.

Virtual reality (VR) remains inconsistently defined in medical education, with the term being applied to heterogeneous immersive and nonimmersive technologies. This inconsistency may hinder intervention classification, evidence synthesis, curriculum planning, and technology selection. This study aimed to analyze and clarify the concept of VR in medical education. A concept analysis was conducted using the eight stages of Walker and Avant's framework. A scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology provided the original documentary basis. A complementary concept-directed, non

Fabric topological haptic proxy for interactive virtual reality.

Physical objects serving as haptic proxies offer a promising approach to enrich tactile experience in virtual reality. However, conventional haptic proxies are hampered by prohibitive costs, limited reusability, and the logistical burden of creating and storing numerous object-specific models. Here, we introduce a fabric-based topological haptic proxy (FTHP) that functions as a programmable and universal interface. Our approach synergistically integrates origami-inspired topological constraints with triboelectric sensor yarns. The engineered topological design, featuring heterogeneous rigid an

Application of Virtual Reality to Alter Sweetness Perception.

Regular consumption of excess sugar is linked to nutrition-based diseases, including gut problems, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Increasing sweetness perception is a novel technique to decrease sugar consumption. This experiment compared the sweetness perception of sweetened and unsweetened almond milk in response to different virtual environments with music and visuals. Two music types, the classical song Goldberg Variations, BMV. 998-Variation 13 and a jazz song generated by AI were used. Additionally, fall and spring forest backgrounds were generated by th

DomeVR: Immersive virtual reality for primates and rodents.

Immersive virtual reality (VR) environments are a powerful tool to explore cognitive processes ranging from memory and navigation to visual processing and decision making-and to do so in a naturalistic yet controlled setting. As such, they have been employed across different species, and by a diverse range of research groups. Unfortunately, designing and implementing behavioral tasks in such environments often proves complicated. To tackle this challenge, we created DomeVR, an immersive VR environment built using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). UE4 is a powerful game engine supporting photo-realistic g
