Virtual Reality has already been proven as a useful supplementary treatment tool for anxiety disorders. However, no specific technological importance has been given so far on how to apply Virtual Reality with a way that properly stimulates the phobic stimulus and provide the necessary means for lifelike experience. Thanks to technological advancements, there is now a variety of hardware that can help enhance stronger emotions generated by Virtual Reality systems. This study aims to evaluate the feeling of presence during different hardware setups of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy, and, parti

The exposure in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-known intervention, widely investigated in scientific research. Several studies have shown the benefits of this intervention in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The different exposure techniques are mainly based on the emotional processing of fear theory and use an emotional stimulation of fear, following by its habituation. However, new approaches have emerged and are based on the inhibitory learning theory. The virtual reality technology allows emot

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a major global health challenge. While nonpharmacological therapies are recommended, patient compliance is often hindered by kinesiophobia. Virtual reality (VR) offers an immersive, distraction-based approach, but the comparative effectiveness of different VR modalities remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to compare and rank the efficacy of different VR-based training modalities on pain intensity, disability, and kinesiophobia in patients with CLBP.
METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embas

UNLABELLED: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in military veterans. A comprehensive search of electronic databases identified 9 randomized controlled trials involving 444 veterans that met inclusion criteria. The primary outcomes were changes in PTSD symptom severity measured by the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and PTSD Checklist (PCL). The meta-analysis demonstrated significant reductions in PTSD symptom severity in pre-post comparisons following VRET. I

BACKGROUND: Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy is among the least used evidence-based practices for anxiety disorders in routine care. Providers' negative beliefs about exposure (eg, fears of harm or intolerability) are a major barrier. Experiential methods can reduce these beliefs but are limited by accessibility, standardization, and fidelity. Virtual reality (VR) offers a scalable way to deliver standardized experiential practice. Guided by an "exposure to exposure" (E2E) framework, we conceptualized VR training as an exposure intervention targeting therapists' own anxious beliefs

The BraveMind virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has been developed and has shown efficacy for U.S. service members and veterans. As the first study to date, the present study examined the feasibility of BraveMind VRET for non-U.S. military veterans. Moreover, the study sought to explore in-depth the participants' experiences with BraveMind VRET. Nine Danish veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after deployment to Afghanistan participated in the study. PTSD, depression, and quality of life were assessed at pretreatment, post-treatment, and 3-month followup. The treatment co

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders have a high lifetime prevalence, early-onset and long duration or chronicity. Exposure therapy is considered one of the most effective elements in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for anxiety, but in vivo exposure can be challenging to access and control, and is sometimes rejected by patients because they consider it too aversive. Virtual reality allows flexible and controlled exposure to challenging situations in an immersive and protected environment.
AIM: The SoREAL-trial aims to investigate the effect of group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-in vivo)

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) as a digital technology has developed rapidly, becoming more realistic, portable, sensory and easier to navigate. Although studies have found VR to be effective for many clinical applications, patients and clinicians have described several barriers to the successful implementation of this technology. To remove barriers for implementation of VR in health care, a greater understanding is needed of how VR can integrate into clinical environments, particularly complex settings such as an intensive care unit.
AIM: This study aimed to explore the perceived barriers

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions. Besides psycho-pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy with an exposure-based approach is considered the gold standard. However, not all patients benefit from this approach. Here, we aimed to translate laboratory findings on enhanced fear extinction with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the clinic. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 76 participants with acrophobia received an activating intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) targeting the left posterior prefronta

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and agoraphobia are common, impairing conditions often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) conducted in groups. In CBT, exposure therapy is a core element. However, in-vivo exposure therapy is logistically challenging and aversive for both patient and therapist, especially in a group context, often leading to exposure being skipped altogether in clinical practice. Virtual reality exposure (VRE), in which phobic stimuli are presented through immersive virtual reality technology, has shown promise as a flexible alternative to in-vivo exposure

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by disturbing and unwanted thoughts as well as repetitive and time-consuming behaviors that interfere with performance. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has shown to have beneficial effects on reducing OCD symptoms as the first line of treatment. Moreover, Virtual Reality (VR) has been a more feasible and accessible intervention for OCD in recent years. Regarding the point, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality exposure and response prevention (VRERP) in the treatment of the OCD contamin

Panic disorder (PD) and agoraphobia (AG) are prevalent mental health issues. Recent approaches have integrated mobile virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) into internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) to facilitate exposure therapy, providing a promising supplement to traditional psychotherapy. This preregistered, randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of a guided IMI with integrated VRET for treating PD and AG. Patients (N = 32) were either assigned to the experimental group receiving the IMI with VRET, or the active control group receiving sessions covering stress educa

BACKGROUND: In recent years, virtual reality exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (VRE-CBT) has shown good treatment results in (subclinical) anxiety disorders and seems to be a good alternative to exposure in vivo in regular cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, previous meta-analyses on the efficacy of VRE-CBT on anxiety disorders have included studies on specific phobias and subthreshold anxiety; therefore, these results may not be generalizable to patients with more severe and disabling anxiety disorders.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study is to determine the efficacy of

BACKGROUND: Cocaine craving is a central symptom of cocaine use disorders (CUD). Virtual reality cue-exposure therapy for craving (VRCET) allows more immersive, realistic, and controllable exposure than traditional non-VR cue-exposure therapy (CET), whose efficacy is limited in treating substance use disorders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of VRCET, as a stand-alone and add-on intervention (i.e., combined with cognitive therapy), compared to a picture-based CET (PCET), in reducing self-reported cocaine craving in inpatients hospitalized for CUD.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a common condition which can be treated effectively with exposure therapy. However, inherent difficulties in stimuli presentation and control limits dissemination and the therapeutic potential. Virtual Reality (VR) technology has the potential to resolve these issues and provide a scalable platform for self-help interventions. No previous study has examined whether this can be achieved using the first generation of consumer VR hardware and software. In the current trial, n = 25 + 25 participants were randomized to either one-session therapist-led VR exposure th

BACKGROUND: Due to several treatment barriers, many individuals with panic disorder do not receive evidence-based treatment. One promising option to narrow this treatment gap is Internet-based psychotherapy, which has been shown particularly effective in guided formats. Still, there remains room for improvement to make these digital therapies more accessible, cost-efficient, and aligned with best practices for in-person interventions (e.g., exposure). The smartphone app "Invirto - Treatment for Anxiety" offers digitally guided, evidence-based treatment of panic disorders including virtual real
