The efficacy of multiple versus single hyaluronic acid injections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IA-HA) is a common therapy used to treat knee pain and suppress knee inflammation in knee osteoarthritis (OA), typically prescribed in regimens ranging from a single injection to 5 weekly injections given once weekly. We conducted a systematic review to determine the efficacy of IA-HA, with subgroup analyses to explore the differences in knee pain and adverse events (AEs) across different dosing regimens. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of the literature to identify studies evaluating IA-HA for the management of knee OA compared to IA-sal

The efficacy of intra-articular hyaluronan injection after the microfracture technique for the treatment of articular cartilage lesions.

BACKGROUND: Although the exact mechanism of action has yet to be elucidated, recent animal studies have demonstrated chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties of hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation. HYPOTHESIS: Intra-articular hyaluronic acid after microfracture improves the quality of the repair leading to a more hyaline-like repair tissue with better defect fill and adjacent area integration. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Full-thickness cartilage defects were created in the weightbearing area of the medial femoral condyle in 36 female New Zealand White rabb

Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint: a proposal for a single-needle technique.

Arthrocentesis is a method of flushing out the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that is currently performed by providing a double access to the joint space. Several studies have shown that arthrocentesis of the upper compartment of the TMJ may be a highly effective method to restore normal maximal mouth opening and functioning. Nonetheless, the classical 2-needle technique has some limits, such as the low tolerability and difficulty in performing it in the presence of intra-articular adherences. The adoption of a single-needle for both fluid injection and aspiration might have some advantages wit

Hyaluronic Acid Injections in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis Secondary to Primary Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Synthesis.

The purpose of this study is to review the current literature on the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) specifically applied to the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) secondary to primary inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Osteoarthritis should be carefully considered because it has potentially devastating effects on health-related quality of life. Locally injected HA seems to be an effective treatment for OA but it is not clear how to place this treatment in the context of inflammatory rheumatic disorders. To retrieve relevant articles, we conducted the search through MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Databa

Neutrophil elastase levels in the gingival crevicular fluid following hyaluronan gel application in the treatment of chronic periodontitis: A randomized split-mouth study.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils are the predominant leukocytes in the periodontium, which prevent infection from periodontal pathogens and subsequent tissue destruction. A potentially destructive role has been elucidated, especially due to elastase enzyme. Controlling its levels might be crucial in minimizing the tissue destruction. Hyaluronan, known to inhibit the release of this enzyme from neutrophils, might be a viable option to treat chronic periodontitis. AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the effects of 0.2% hyaluronan gel adjunctive to scaling and root planing on the level

Hyaluronic acid and other conservative treatment options for osteoarthritis of the ankle.

BACKGROUND: The cause of ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is usually trauma. Patients are relatively young, since ankle trauma occurs at a relatively young age. Several conservative treatment options are available, evidence of the benefits and harms of these options are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of any conservative treatment for ankle OA in adults in order to provide a synthesis of the evidence as a base for future treatment guidelines. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL 2014, issue 9), MEDLINE (Ovid) (1946 up to 11 Se

Versican induces a pro-metastatic ovarian cancer cell behavior which can be inhibited by small hyaluronan oligosaccharides.

The assembly of pericellular matrix containing hyaluronan (HA) and versican has been shown to be a pre-requisite for proliferation and migration of mesenchymal cells. In this study, we investigated whether treatment with recombinant versican could induce the formation of a pericellular matrix by ovarian cancer cells (OVCAR-3, OVCAR-5, and SKOV-3) and promote their motility, invasion, and adhesion to peritoneal cells in vitro. We also determined whether versican-induced pericellular matrix formation and metastatic cancer cell behavior could be blocked by small HA oligosaccharides. Only combined
