A Review of Childhood Vision Screening Laws and Programs Across the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Many organizations recommend childhood vision screenings. Furthermore, 42 out of 50 states in the U.S. have laws requiring these examinations looking for multiple ocular abnormalities that can lead to amblyopia, which has the potential to result in lifelong visual impairment. Currently, South Dakota is not a state with similar aforementioned law. The purpose of this research was to examine vision screening laws and programs across America to potentially provide a framework from which South Dakota could adopt its own law. METHODS: This is a healthcare policy review of childhood v

[A simplified screening test for the identification of individuals with diminished vision in developing countries].

Simple but effective tests have been produced for screening subjects with low vision in developing countries. These tests of distance and near vision, based on the E test, were evaluated and validated in trials with people aged 4-90 years, and have been field tested in the health, education and rehabilitation services in 32 developing countries. Their sensitivity and specificity as screening tools for low vision have been calculated: sensitivity of 85% and specificity of 96% for the distance vision test, and sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 84% for the near vision test. Spectacle Compliance and Its Determinants in a School Vision Screening Pilot in Botswana.

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of school eye health programmes relies on many factors, including compliance with spectacle wear. The objectives of this study were to determine spectacle compliance in a school vision screening pilot programme in Botswana, and investigate factors predictive of compliance. METHODS: The study was an observational, cross-sectional follow-up of a pilot school screening programme. Unannounced compliance checks were completed after 3-4 months in a convenience sample of 19 schools. Sex, age, school level, visual acuity, and refractive error were analysed using logistic re

Is screening for congenital colour vision deficiency in school students worthwhile? A review.

This review analyses the literature on screening for congenital colour vision deficiency in school students, which predominantly uses the Ishihara test. The review was framed with respect to the established Wilson and Jungner criteria for screening programs. These criteria relate to the characteristics of the condition concerned, the performance of the screening test, the existence of treatment options and the performance of screening programs. The literature reviewed suggests that congenital colour vision deficiency has not been shown to increase risk of road traffic crashes and is not a prec

Children's Eye Screening South Australia (CESSA): diagnostic performance of a vision screening programme for 7-9-year-olds.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Standardised paediatric vision screening programmes enable timely detection of refractive errors and other amblyopia risk factors. School-based programmes that use appropriate referral thresholds for distance visual acuity, combined with photorefraction, can improve detection of amblyopia and refractive errors in children. BACKGROUND: The Children's Eye Screening South Australia study evaluated the performance of a vision screening protocol for detecting common vision disorders in a school-based sample of children aged 7-9 years, while characterising prevalent vision condi

Poverty and Vision: The Effect of Title 1 Status on Vision Screening Referral Rates in School-Aged Children in Western South Dakota.

PURPOSE: Interventions such as eye exams and glasses are used to correct visual problems that may lead to amblyopia, an irreversible decrease in visual acuity. Children with limited access to these interventions are more likely to have unaddressed visual problems that can lead to amblyopia or negatively impact school performance. This study compared vision screening results of children in schools with Title 1 or Non-Title 1 designation to investigate the link between poverty and vision. METHODS: Data from KidsFIRST vision screenings conducted with the SPOTTM photoscreener performed in Rapid C

Diagnostic accuracy of the Parr vision test, single crowded Lea symbols and Spot vision screener for vision screening of preschool children aged 4-5 years in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

PURPOSE: Preschool children in New Zealand undergo vision screening to detect amblyopia at 4-5 years of age. The current test, the Parr vision test, does not meet international visual acuity chart guidelines and has not been validated against other commonly used paediatric vision tests. New Zealand vision screening protocols are also not targeted for detecting other eye conditions such as uncorrected refractive error, which may affect school performance. We compared the Parr vision test with the single crowded Lea symbols and the Spot vision screener for detecting ocular pathology, refractive

Vision screening for correctable visual acuity deficits in school-age children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although the benefits of vision screening seem intuitive, the value of such programmes in junior and senior schools has been questioned. In addition there exists a lack of clarity regarding the optimum age for screening and frequency at which to carry out screening. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of vision screening programmes carried out in schools to reduce the prevalence of correctable visual acuity deficits due to refractive error in school-age children. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Coc

Vision screening in older adults on dialysis: do nephrology nurses have a role?

Undetected vision loss commonly occurs in older adults adding undue stress to those on dialysis. Poor vision is associated with increased risk of falls and decreased quality of life. Common visual impairments--presbyopia, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy--often are detectable by visual acuity testing. Using various methods of visual acuity testing, nephrology nurses can perform vision testing quickly and inexpensively. Other nursing interventions also can improve eyesight.

Visual disorders in 7-year-old children with and without previous vision screening.

An analysis of visual defects among 310 children referred from a vision screening of 2 178 7-year-old children revealed a 50% frequency of significant eye defects among the referrals (7% of screened children). Of the screened children, one group (1 530 children) had previous visual screening three years earlier. The other group (648 children) had no previous vision screening until the age of seven. A comparison between the two groups showed that the risk of finding a new significant eye disorder in a school entrant was more than 6 times greater for a child who was not examined in his preschool

Re: Children's Eye Screening South Australia (CESSA): diagnostic performance of a vision screening programme for 7-9-year-olds.

The evaluation of the Children's Eye Screening South Australia (CESSA) programme highlights the need to move beyond measuring screening coverage alone and toward assessing whether children with vision disorders receive timely diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. While the combination of distance visual acuity testing and photorefraction improves detection of refractive errors and amblyopia risk factors, the broader challenge is ensuring that screening functions as an accountable child-health pathway. We propose that future school vision screening programmes report implementation outcomes includ

Context-Aware Vision Language Foundation Models for Ocular Disease Screening in Retinal Images.

Foundation models are large-scale versatile systems trained on vast quantities of diverse data to learn generalizable representations. Their adaptability with minimal fine-tuning makes them particularly promising for medical imaging, where data variability and domain shifts are major challenges. Currently, two types of foundation models dominate the literature: self-supervised models and more recent vision-language models. In this study, we advance the application of vision-language foundation (VLF) models for ocular disease screening using the OPHDIAT dataset, which includes nearly 700,000 fu

Current status of school vision screening-rationale, models, impact and challenges: a review.

Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of vision impairment in children globally, and studies have demonstrated that spectacle correction addresses the large majority of childhood vision impairment. Furthermore, trial evidence illustrates the beneficial impact of spectacles on learning, with effect sizes exceeding that of other school health interventions. While it is established that good vision is important for learning and optimising childhood development and quality of life, many countries lack healthcare systems that provide vision screening or universal access to eyecare for a

Recommended practices for vision screening in pre-school-age children: A 2025 update.

SIGNIFICANCE: Despite significant evidence supporting the utility of vision screening for identifying children who need further evaluation by an eye care professional, there is considerable variability in screening guidelines along with a lack of consensus for monitoring and reporting outcomes. This article provides updated vision screening recommendations for pre-school-age children (aged 3 to <6 years) in the United States. PURPOSE: The goal of vision screening programs is to identify, refer, and help ensure eye examinations for children who may have vision disorders, such as significant un
