A 3-year study of patients with tinnitus and jaw muscle tenderness.

Objective: This study evaluated three-year results of treatment with an interocclusal appliance in 89 tinnitus patients with jaw muscle tenderness. Methods: Subjective tinnitus severity was recorded using a visual analog scale (VAS). The number of tender muscles was registered. The patients were followed annually. After three years, 64 patients were examined (72%). Results: Tinnitus severity at baseline was high (mean VAS value 68.3). After one year, the VAS values were substantially lower (mean 37.4; p < 0.001). During the following two years, there were no significant changes in VAS values.

Comparing pain intensity rating scales in acute postoperative pain: boundary values and category disagreements.

Pain intensity assessment scales are important in evaluating postoperative pain and guiding management. Different scales can be used for patients to self-report their pain, but research determining cut points between mild, moderate and severe pain has been limited to studies with < 1500 patients. We examined 13,017 simultaneous acute postoperative pain ratings from 913 patients taken at rest and on activity, between 4 h and 48 h following surgery using both a verbal rating scale (no, mild, moderate or severe pain) and 0-100 mm visual analogue scale. We determined the best cut points on the vis

Validation of the 0-10 verbal numeric scale for assessment of pruritus severity in dogs.

BACKGROUND: The pruritus Visual Analog Scale (pVAS) is currently the only validated tool for assessing canine pruritus. A verbal numeric scale (VNS) offers an alternative if clients are not present or able to complete the pVAS. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: To validate the 0-10 VNS and evaluate its interchangeability with the pVAS. ANIMALS: 251 dogs were included in the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dog owners were asked to assess their pet's pruritus level using the pVAS, the 0-10 VNS and the verbal rating categories (mild, moderate, severe) in one or two subsequent visits. To be valid, VNS must s

What Makes Tinnitus Loud?

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus loudness is a subjective measure, and it does not directly reflect either tinnitus severity or the impact on daily life. Nevertheless, loud tinnitus may be the most frequent clinical complaint of tinnitus patients. Factors contributing to the loudness of the phantom sound have rarely been studied. We evaluated both matched and self-rated loudness in a large sample of patients with tinnitus and analyzed the influencing factors among demographic, hearing, and tinnitus characteristics. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine patients with chronic tinnitus were enrolled. We evalua

A RheuMetric physician checklist to quantitate levels of inflammation, damage and distress on 0-10 visual analogue scales.

A physician global assessment of patient status (DOCGL) was designed initially to quantitate inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) clinical trials, in which patients are selected for high levels of activity. However, in patients seen in routine care with various diagnoses, and even in some RA patients selected for clinical trials, DOCGL also may be affected by joint damage and/or patient distress. To clarify DOCGL on a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS), 3 additional 0-10 VAS have been developed to record physician estimates of inflammation (DOCINF), damage (DOCDAM), and distress (D
