What visual perception tells us about mind and brain.

Recent studies of visual perception have begun to reveal the connection between neuronal activity in the brain and conscious visual experience. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the human occipital lobe disrupts the normal perception of objects in ways suggesting that important aspects of visual perception are based on activity in early visual cortical areas. Recordings made with microelectrodes in animals suggest that the perception of the lightness and depth of visual surfaces develops through computations performed across multiple brain areas. Activity in earlier areas is more tightly co

The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception.

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

Visual agnosia: the dual deficit of perception and recognition.

This case of visual agnosia is of special interest because of its causation by trauma, of the unusually long follow-up (10 1/2 years), and the evidence for dual deficits of recognition and perception. Although most of the findings were characteristic of associative visual agnosia with preserved perceptual function, the poor copying, contrasted to better spontaneous drawing, suggested apperceptive agnosia as well. Prosopagnosia, alexia without agraphia, Balint's syndrome, visual static agnosia and simultanagnosia were also observed. The patient had persisting amnestic syndrome, but no dementia

Corrective surgery improves visual motor and visual perception skills in children with intermittent exotropia.

SIGNIFICANCE: This study reveals that children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) demonstrate subtle but measurable impairments in visual motor and visual perceptual skills. Importantly, strabismus surgery may yield functional gains in these domains, providing clinical insights beyond ocular alignment outcomes. PURPOSE: To assess visual motor and visual perception skills in children with IXT compared with matched controls, and evaluate post-operative changes after surgical intervention. METHODS: Prospective longitudinal case-control study. Visual motor and visual perception were evaluated usi

Visual Function and Visual Perception among Senior Citizens with Mild Cognitive Impairment in Taiwan.

Purpose: With the benefits of advanced medical technology, Taiwan has gradually changed from an aged society to a super-aged society. According to previous studies, the prevalence rate of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) over the age of 60 is 15% to 20%. Therefore, the main purpose of our study was to analyze the correlation of cognitive function with visual function (specifically, binocular vision and visual perception) in Taiwanese volunteers aged 60 years or older. Methods: Thirty-six healthy participants who were not taking psychiatric medications and who had not been diagnosed with any ret

Visual imagery and visual perception induce similar changes in occipital slow waves of sleep.

Previous studies have shown that regional slow-wave activity (SWA) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep is modulated by prior experience and learning. Although this effect has been convincingly demonstrated for the sensorimotor domain, attempts to extend these findings to the visual system have provided mixed results. In this study we asked whether depriving subjects of external visual stimuli during daytime would lead to regional changes in slow waves during sleep and whether the degree of "internal visual stimulation" (spontaneous imagery) would influence such changes. In two 8-h sessi

Vividness of Visual Imagery Depends on the Neural Overlap with Perception in Visual Areas.

UNLABELLED: Research into the neural correlates of individual differences in imagery vividness point to an important role of the early visual cortex. However, there is also great fluctuation of vividness within individuals, such that only looking at differences between people necessarily obscures the picture. In this study, we show that variation in moment-to-moment experienced vividness of visual imagery, within human subjects, depends on the activity of a large network of brain areas, including frontal, parietal, and visual areas. Furthermore, using a novel multivariate analysis technique, w

Visual and non-visual contributions to the perception of object motion during self-motion.

Many locomotor tasks involve interactions with moving objects. When observer (i.e., self-)motion is accompanied by object motion, the optic flow field includes a component due to self-motion and a component due to object motion. For moving observers to perceive the movement of other objects relative to the stationary environment, the visual system could recover the object-motion component - that is, it could factor out the influence of self-motion. In principle, this could be achieved using visual self-motion information, non-visual self-motion information, or a combination of both. In this st

Visual aftereffects and the consequences of visual system lesions on their perception in the rhesus monkey.

This study examined the consequences of visual system lesions on visual aftereffects produced by achromatic stimuli of various luminance contrasts and chromatic stimuli of various wavelength compositions. The effects of repeated exposure to such adapting stimuli were assessed using probes whose luminance contrast and wavelength composition were systematically varied using both detection and discrimination paradigms. Interocular tests revealed that both peripheral and central mechanisms contribute to the visual aftereffects produced by the adapting stimulus arrays used in this study. Contrary t

Visual contrast perception in visual snow syndrome reveals abnormal neural gain but not neural noise.

Visual snow syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by a persistent visual disturbance, visual snow, in conjunction with additional visual symptoms. Cortical hyperexcitability is a potential pathophysiological mechanism, which could be explained by increased gain in neural responses to visual input. Alternatively, neural noise in the visual pathway could be abnormally elevated. We assessed these two potential competing neural mechanisms in our studies of visual contrast perception. Cortical hyperexcitation also occurs in migraine, which commonly co-occurs with visual snow syndrome.

Time2: A Framework for the Neural Dynamics of Visual Perception.

Whenever we look at an object, we seem to perceive it immediately. However, this is not the case for two reasons. First, it takes hundreds of milliseconds for the brain to process visual information reaching the retina. Second, perceiving an object requires fixating it for some duration-typically hundreds of milliseconds-during which the retina continuously receives new visual information. These facts together imply that visual information is both processed and received through time. These two temporal facets of perception, which we term processing time and stimulus time, are often conflated i

Visual Vertigo Is Not Correlated with Perception of Dynamic Verticality.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted a prospective study determining the relationship between severity of visual vertigo and extent of visual dependence by comparing the visual vertigo analogue scale (VVAS) with the dynamic subjective visual vertical (dSVV) test. METHODS: A total of 76 patients with chronic dizziness (without peripheral or central vestibular lesions) and 43 healthy controls completed VVAS and dSVV testing. The VVAS uses nine visual analog scales to query visual vertigo across nine specific situations. The dSVV measures visual dependence under three conditions: static background, counte

Visual Perception of Heading in the Syndrome of Oculopalatal Tremor.

Perception of our linear motion, heading, relies on convergence from multiple sensory systems utilizing visual and vestibular signals. Multisensory convergence takes place in the visuo-vestibular areas of the cerebral cortex and posterior cerebellar vermis. Latter closely connected with the inferior olive may malfunction in disorders of olivo-cerebellar hypersynchrony, such as the syndrome of oculopalatal tremor (OPT). We had recently shown an impairment in vestibular heading perception in the subjects with OPT. Here we asked whether the hypersynchrony in the inferior-olive cerebellar circuit

No effect of rhythmic visual stimulation on experimental pain perception.

Brain oscillations, particularly in the alpha, beta, and gamma bands, have been implicated in pain perception through correlational studies. Rhythmic visual stimulation (RVS) offers a noninvasive method to experimentally manipulate these oscillations and examine their potential role in pain perception. We conducted 2 within-participant experiments to assess whether RVS is associated with changes in both acute pain perception and pain-related neural oscillations. In experiment 1, 41 participants received brief (13 seconds) RVS at alpha (10 Hz), beta (18 Hz), or gamma (42 Hz) frequencies, or an

Lrrns define a visual circuit underlying brightness and contrast perception.

Brightness and contrast are fundamental features of vision, crucial for object detection, environmental navigation, and feeding. Here, we identify a brightness-and contrast-processing circuit in the zebrafish visual system and uncover the role of Leucine-rich repeat neuronal (Lrrn) cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) in regulating its assembly. Deep-projecting retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) serve as the first synaptic relay to the brain requiring Lrrn2 and Lrrn3a for precise axonal targeting and connectivity within the optic tectum. Genetic targeting of these CAMs leads to circuit disorganization an

Role of path information in visual perception of joint stiffness.

Humans have an astonishing ability to extract hidden information from the movement of others. In previous work, subjects observed the motion of a simulated stick-figure, two-link planar arm and estimated its stiffness. Fundamentally, stiffness is the relation between force and displacement. Given that subjects were unable to physically interact with the simulated arm, they were forced to make their estimates solely based on observed kinematic information. Remarkably, subjects were able to correctly correlate their stiffness estimates with changes in the simulated stiffness, despite the lack of

Perception of the dynamic visual vertical during sinusoidal linear motion.

The vestibular system provides information for spatial orientation. However, this information is ambiguous: because the otoliths sense the gravitoinertial force, they cannot distinguish gravitational and inertial components. As a consequence, prolonged linear acceleration of the head can be interpreted as tilt, referred to as the somatogravic effect. Previous modeling work suggests that the brain disambiguates the otolith signal according to the rules of Bayesian inference, combining noisy canal cues with the a priori assumption that prolonged linear accelerations are unlikely. Within this mod

Knowledge corruption for visual perception in individuals high on paranoia.

Studies revealed that patients with paranoid schizophrenia display overconfidence in errors for memory and social cognition tasks. The present investigation examined whether this pattern holds true for visual perception tasks. Nonclinical participants were recruited via an online panel. Individuals were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the Paranoia Checklist and were then presented with 24 blurry pictures; half contained a hidden object while the other half showed snowy (visual) noise. Participants were asked to state whether the visual items contained an object and how confiden
