Tangential vitreous traction observed in optic disc pit maculopathy without apparent serous detachment.

The authors describe a rare case of a patient with an optic pit that was accompanied by a cyst-like change in the macula without serous retinal detachment. A 38-year-old woman with a 10-year history of visual impairment in her right eye was referred to the authors' clinic. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye, and ophthalmoscopy showed a cyst-like change in the macula with tangential traction by the surrounding vitreous. The patient was treated with vitrectomy and the posterior vitreous was separated from the retina during the procedure. After the surgery, the cyst-like

Longitudinal Progression of Horseshoe Retinal Tear-Associated Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Without Clinically Evident Complete Posterior Vitreous Detachment: A Case Report.

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is considered a key event in the pathogenesis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), and horseshoe retinal tears are generally associated with vitreoretinal traction during PVD evolution. We report the longitudinal progression of horseshoe retinal tear-associated RRD without clinically evident complete PVD. A 64-year-old nonmyopic man presented to a general ophthalmology clinic with floaters and preserved visual acuity. Retrospective review of baseline ultrawidefield (UWF) imaging demonstrated a horseshoe retinal tear with localized macula-on temporal R

Quantitative proteomics analysis of human vitreous in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with choroidal detachment by data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry.

The prognosis of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with choroidal detachment (RRDCD) is often poor and complicated. This study focused on the identification of the characteristic proteins and signal pathways associated with the etiology of RRDCD and to provide guidance for diagnosis and treatment of RRDCD. In this study, vitreous humor samples were obtained from 16 RRDCD patients, 14 with RRD, 12 with idiopathic epiretinal macular membrane (IEMM), and 5 healthy controls from donated corpse eyes. Data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis were employed to i

The fellow eye of patients with phakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment from atrophic holes of lattice degeneration without posterior vitreous detachment.

BACKGROUND: Primary phakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) without posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) represents a unique clinical entity that behaves differently from RRD associated with PVD. While previous studies have reported the long term findings in the fellow eye of patients with RRD and PVD, the outcome of the fellow eye of patients with RRD without PVD is not known. METHODS: Consecutive patients with RRD not associated with PVD were studied retrospectively. The authors evaluated the fellow eye for retinal detachment or other vision threatening pathology. RESULTS: 27 patient

Black posterior vitreous detachment: A 10-year historical cohort of pigmented uveal tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Pigmentary posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), referred to as "black PVD," is a rare entity describing PVD along with pigment dispersion in the vitreous. There are a few case reports describing pigmentary PVD, yet the association between pigmentary PVD and uveal and optic disc tumors was not described before. The aim of this study was to report the clinical features of patients with pigmentary PVD associated with these tumors. DESIGN: An 8-year retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Eight patients who were diagnosed with pigmentary PVD associated with a uveal tumor or optic ne

Correlation between miR-148 Expression in Vitreous and Severity of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

Purpose. We had earlier reported positive hsa-miR-148a-3p expression in eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and its involvement in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of retinal pigment epithelium in vitro. Here we investigated the association of hsa-miR-148a-3p expression levels in the vitreous fluid of patients with RRD with severity of RRD. Methods. The hsa-miR-148a-3p expression levels in the vitreous fluid, range (degree) of retinal detachment (RD), and pixels of retinal break were measured in 27 eyes with RRD. The association of hsa-miR-148a-3p expression levels with othe

Bilateral Spontaneous Hyphema, Vitreous Hemorrhage, and Choroidal Detachment With Concurrent Dabigatran Etexilate Therapy.

A 79-year-old woman was referred for rapid onset of painless bilateral vision loss. Anterior segment exams revealed bilateral spontaneous hyphema and fibrin accumulation. Observation of the posterior chamber by B-scan ultrasound showed vitreous hemorrhage and choroidal detachment bilaterally. No evidence of additional intraocular inflammation was present. Laboratory work-up for hematologic abnormalities was unremarkable. These hemorrhagic events were suspected to be a complication from taking the novel anticoagulant, dabigatran etexilate (Pradaxa; Boehringer, Ingelheim, Germany). She initially

Increased nitric oxide (NO) pathway metabolites in the vitreous fluid of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment or diabetic traction retinal detachment.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) plays a significant role in physiological and pathological processes in the retina. In the L-arginine-NO pathway, NO synthase (NOS) converts L-arginine to NO and L-citrulline. Increased NO production, mediated by inducible NOS has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various vitreoretinal diseases. In the present study it is hypothesized that in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), the production of NO pathway metabolites might be upregulated. METHODS: Using high-pressure liquid chromatography citrulline, arginine and nitrite were measured in vitreous fluid

Comparative study of incomplete posterior vitreous detachment as a risk factor for proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal vitreoretinal relationships have recently been implicated in many vitreoretinal disorders. Sites of abnormal vitreoretinal adherences are likely to exist in eyes predisposed to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD), causing either retinal tears or incomplete posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). The present study was designed in two parts to identify the risk for preoperative and postoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) due to incomplete PVD. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the vitreoretinal relationships using high-resolution kinetic echography in 102 cons

An endoscopic overview of the anterior vitreous base in retinal detachment and anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: Anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is an important cause of persistent or recurrent retinal detachment (RD). Endoscopy provides 360° panoramic viewing of the vitreous cavity and high-magnification viewing of the anterior vitreous base (AVB). This study describes the 'in vivo' anatomy and pathoanatomy of the AVB using an ocular endoscope in RD and anterior PVR. METHODS: An intraoperative analysis of over 2000 consecutive eyes undergoing vitrectomy for RD operated with endoscopy-assisted vitrectomy was performed. It was recorded in notes dictated during surgery and in stand

[On a connection of early manifestations of angle closure glaucoma and development of posterior vitreous detachment].

In author's opinion development of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is an involutional factor which participates in pathogenesis of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) in predisposed eyes. Initial increase of intraocular pressure in the eyes with narrow anterior chamber angle and predisposition to PACG is closely connected with the moment of PVD development, which can be detected with ultrasonography. The author supposes that ultrasonic examination of the posterior globe to detect PVD can be used as one of monitoring method in patients predisposed to PACG.
