The Influence of Hearing Aid Use on Outcomes of Children With Mild Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of consistent hearing aid (HA) use on outcomes in children with mild hearing loss (HL). METHOD: Five- or 7-year-old children with mild HL were separated into 3 groups on the basis of patterns of daily HA use. Using analyses of variance, we compared outcomes between groups on speech and language tests and a speech perception in noise task. Regression models were used to investigate the influence of cumulative auditory experience (audibility, early intervention, HA use) on outcomes. RESULTS: Full-time HA users demonstrated significantly higher scores on

Effect of "missing" information on fast mapping by individuals with vocabulary limitations associated with intellectual disability.

One phenomenon of language development is a dramatic increase in vocabulary size, driven by rapid word learning. For individuals with intellectual disabilities, the size of the lexicon often lags behind what would be expected both for CA and MA. I examined how well individuals with severely limited receptive vocabulary associated with intellectual disability retained a new word-picture map after a single exposure under conditions of varying difficulty. This study was a direct replication of a previous investigation with typically developing preschool children, enabling a direct comparison. Ind

PREVENIR: An Oral Language Intervention for Preventing Reading Difficulties in Kindergarten Children-A Preliminary Effectiveness Study.

PURPOSE: Preschool years are critical for oral language development, which has long-term implications for academic and social success. However, evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of classwide interventions that promote preliteracy skills before the onset of formal reading instruction-particularly in languages other than English-remains limited. This preliminary effectiveness study examined whether an oral language intervention, called PREVENIR, led to measurable gains in Catalan kindergarten children's language skills and helped prevent future reading difficulties compared with busi

Do Mathematics and Reading Skills Impact Student Science Outcomes?

Establishing validated science programs for students with or at risk for learning disabilities requires testing treatment effects and exploring differential response patterns. This study explored whether students' initial mathematics and reading skills influenced their treatment response to a whole-class, second-grade science program called Scientific Explorers (Sci2). The original Sci2 study employed a cluster randomized controlled design and included 294 U.S. students from 18 second-grade classrooms. Differential effects of the program by initial mathematics and reading skill levels were not

Language Access is a Catalyst for Early Numerical Abilities.

Recent research has found that the cumulative amount of time a child has had auditory access to language accounts for differences in early numerical abilities between oral Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) and hearing preschoolers. We replicate and extend these findings by exploring the role of language ability and salience of numerical information with a larger sample (N = 89; 43 female; majority White) of 3- 6-year-old oral DHH and hearing children. We captured number knowledge, numerical discrimination, salience of numerical information, and parent-reports of vocabulary and language experience

Effects of video based training on spoken and signed language acquisition by students with mental retardation.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of video presentations on the acquisition of both spoken and manually signed lexical items by students with mental retardation. A 10-lesson curriculum in which lexical items were introduced and reviewed by one of three pedagogical methods (therapist only, therapist plus video, or video only) was implemented over a four week period. Pretest and posttest measures of expressive and receptive vocabulary of 35 students with mental retardation revealed that all three methods resulted in significant increases in both spoken and manual sign productio

Participation in a home visiting program predicted maternal but not child vocabulary diversity: A pragmatic randomized trial in Brazil.

The Criança Feliz (Happy Child) parenting program is a home visiting intervention serving over a million low-income Brazilian families. The current study assessed its longitudinal associations with maternal and child speech and gestures in a subsample (n = 145) from the program's impact evaluation research. We performed a between-participants pragmatic randomized trial. Mothers (79.7% Black) and children (17-25 months of age; 50.3% female) were randomly assigned to control (n = 73) and intervention (n = 72) groups. One year later, mother-child pairs were recorded playing at home, and the video

Morphological knowledge and spelling in French-speaking adults with developmental dyslexia.

Spelling errors are among the most persistent symptoms of dyslexia in adults. This study investigated the influence of morphological information on spelling accuracy in French-speaking adults with developmental dyslexia. Specifically, we aimed to (1) compare university-level adults with dyslexia and age-matched controls in spelling morphologically complex words, and (2) examine the role of morphological awareness in spelling among individuals with dyslexia. In total, 53 adults with dyslexia and 55 typical adult readers completed a spelling task with five types of words: words with silent final

Expressive language skills in Finnish two-year-old extremely- and very-low-birth-weight preterm children.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm children with low birth weight are at greater risk of experiencing speech and language difficulties than full-term children. The aim of the current study was to investigate expressive language skills of Finnish-speaking preterm children with low birth weight [extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) children: n = 8; very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) children: n = 10] at 2 years of corrected age and to compare their language results with full-term controls (n = 18), using spontaneous speech samples. METHODS: The children were video recorded in semistructured free-play sessions with thei

Verbal working memory and story retelling in school-age children with autism.

PURPOSE: This study examined verbal working memory and language ability in 15 school-age children with autism using 3 verbal working memory tasks and 1 story recall task. METHOD: Three measures of verbal working memory--nonword repetition, memory for digits span, and sentence imitation--were given to children with autism and age-matched controls. Verbal working memory measures were chosen to reflect increasing levels of cognitive-linguistic complexity. Story retelling was measured using The Renfrew Bus Story (J. Cowley & C. Glasgow, 1994) and was scored for the percentage of propositions reca

The Impact of Intervention Dose Form on Oral Language Outcomes for Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose The aim of this study was to extract key learning from intervention studies in which qualitative aspects of dosage, dose form, have been examined for children with developmental language disorder (DLD)-in vocabulary, morphosyntax, and phonology domains. This research paper emerged from a pair of systematic reviews, aiming to synthesize available evidence regarding qualitative and quantitative aspects of dosage. While quantitative aspects had been experimentally manipulated, the available evidence for dose form (tasks or activities within which teaching episodes are delivered) was less

Oringano: Shared Ring-Based Gestures for Controlling Internet of Things Devices in a Smart Home.

Smart rings are emerging as a promising class of sensing devices that enable unobtrusive, always-available interaction with Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems. These wearable devices support intuitive gesture-based control while minimizing user attention and preserving mobility. However, despite rapid advances in sensing hardware and gesture recognition algorithms, little is known about how users associate ring-based shared gestures with smart-home commands. To fill this gap, this paper presents Oringano, a framework for designing and evaluating a vocabulary of shared ring-based gestures for

Digital mind mapping tools for B2 tertiary EFL students: An exploration of impacts on writing.

Planning is crucial in academic writing, as it enables students to organize their ideas and use new vocabulary logically. However, many B2-level undergraduate EFL students struggle with coherent organization and lexical diversity in their argumentative essays, which limits writing quality. This research investigates how digital mind-mapping (DMM) tools influence the academic writing of 60 B2-level Saudi EFL undergraduate students at King Faisal University. Using a quasi-experimental design, the participants were divided into an Experimental Group (EG) (n = 34) that used DMM tools (MindMeister

Reconceptualizing Participation in the ICF: A Formal Ontology-Based Approach.

This paper addresses a conceptual and formal limitation in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), where activity and participation are treated as a unified construct, creating ambiguity in rehabilitation contexts. We propose an ontology keeping the ICF structure but formally separating these concepts, enabling more precise participation assessment. A case-based query analysis demonstrates how the unified ICF model may yield false positives in participation documentation, while the refined ontology supports nuanced evaluation. Implementation details and fu

Coordinating virus research: The Virus Infectious Disease Ontology.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted immense work on the investigation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Rapid, accurate, and consistent interpretation of generated data is thereby of fundamental concern. Ontologies-structured, controlled, vocabularies-are designed to support consistency of interpretation, and thereby to prevent the development of data silos. This paper describes how ontologies are serving this purpose in the COVID-19 research domain, by following principles of the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry and by reusing existing ontologies such as the Infectious Disease Ontology

Mediating the Verbal Ability-Conduct Problems Relationship with Child Empathy and Self-Control.

This study was performed in an effort to determine whether poor inhibitory control, operationalized as weak verbal skills, contributes to early antisocial behavior by impeding a child's ability to empathize with others and exercise control over their behavior. A model was tested whereby child empathy and self-control were conceptualized as mediators of a putative relationship between low verbal ability and future conduct problems. A mediation analysis was performed in which the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), a measure of auditory comprehension skills, receptive vocabulary, and verbal

Examining Early Vocabulary Growth Trajectories in Late Talkers in a Low-Income Longitudinal Sample.

Studies show children in low-income households have heightened risk of developing as late talkers (LTs). Scholars have attributed the cause of these differences to variability in child-directed and observed language input, parenting quality, attendance at childcare facilities, or some combination therein, as briefly reviewed. However, this study focuses on a sample entirely of families experiencing low income to explore differences within this group. This study explores growth trajectories for child vocabulary production from age 8-30 months in a racially-diverse low-income longitudinal sample

Facilitating writing performance of EFL learners via virtual reality: Immersion, presence, embodiment.

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) technology is being used to help EFL learners overcome their difficulties with their language skills, especially writing skills. Past studies showed that the instrument that provides immersion will positively affect learners' written performance. In line with that, this study aims to investigate the vocabulary usage and writing performance of learners who learn vocabulary via IVR versus those who learn from conventional classroom-based instruction. A total of 144 Chinese-speaking English learners, who were divided into experimental group (N = 69) and control gro

Bilingual children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate: language and memory skills.

PURPOSE: Research shows that monolingual children with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) have a higher incidence of cognitive-linguistic deficits, but it is not clear whether bilingual preschool children with CLP are especially vulnerable because they need to acquire 2 languages. We tested the hypothesis that bilingual children with CLP score lower than bilingual children with typical development (TD) on receptive vocabulary, verbal memory, and visuospatial memory. METHOD: Participants were 86 bilingual CLP children and 100 TD children 3-6 years of age, dominant in English or Mandarin. Each child
